Steam has four different ways to make a game less visible: uninstall it from your computer, hide it from your own library view, mark it private so other users cannot see most game activity, or ask Steam Support to remove it from ordinary account access. Choose the option that matches your goal before taking action.
Choose the right Steam option

Steam documents the distinction between hidden and private games in its privacy FAQ: hiding is mainly a personal library-organization feature, while marking a game private controls what other users can see.
Uninstall a game without removing ownership
Use this when storage is the problem or you may want to play the game again later.

- Open the Steam desktop client and select Library.
- Right-click the game.
- Choose Manage.
- Select Uninstall and confirm.
Steam removes the installed files from that computer, but the license, playtime and achievements normally remain associated with your account. The title can usually be installed again from your library. Uninstalling does not remove a game from Steam or hide it from friends.

Hide a game from your own library
Choose this for clutter, duplicate entries, unwanted free-to-play titles or games you simply do not want in the normal list.
- Open Steam → Library.
- Right-click the game.
- Select Manage.
- Choose Hide this game.
The game remains owned and available, but it disappears from the ordinary library listing. Hiding is not a reliable social-privacy control; use Mark as Private if your goal is to conceal ownership or activity from other people.
Find and unhide a game
- In the desktop client, open the top-menu View.
- Select Hidden Games.
- Right-click the title.
- Choose Manage, then Remove from Hidden or Unhide (the wording can vary by client version).
Steam’s missing-games guidance also points to the Hidden Games list when a title seems to have disappeared.

Hide a game from friends and your Steam profile
Use Mark as Private, not merely Hide this game.
- Open Library.
- Right-click the game, or open its details page and select the gear icon.
- Choose Manage.
- Select Mark as Private and confirm.
According to Steam, a private game generally stops appearing to other users as owned by you. It can hide the title from your profile’s games list, suppress recently played and activity-feed entries, hide the “Playing” status for that title in friends lists and chats, and remove relevant ownership, achievement or showcase information from other users’ views.

Private status is set while the client is connected to Steam. It does not remove the game from your own library, and it is not absolute invisibility: players on the same multiplayer server may still see your Steam ID, and an invited friend may see your in-game status during an active session. Remove a game from your Steam account
This is the strongest per-game option and should not be used just to free disk space or tidy a library. The exact labels can change, but the current Support workflow is generally:
- Open the Steam client or Steam Support.
- Choose Help → Steam Support.
- Select Games, Software, etc.
- Search for and select the game.
- Choose I want to permanently remove this game from my account.
- Read the warning and confirm.
Steam’s word “permanently” means the title is removed or deactivated from ordinary account and library access. It should not be read as a guaranteed deletion of every transaction, achievement, playtime record or backend association. Public documentation does not establish that every historical record disappears, and restoration is not guaranteed.
Community reports describe the Support action as license deactivation and say that Support may sometimes restore a removed title through a route such as It’s not in my library. Treat that only as a possible recovery path; do not remove a game assuming it can always be recovered, and check Support before buying it again.

Achievements, playtime and refunds
- Uninstall: normally leaves ownership, playtime and achievements unchanged.
- Hide: primarily changes your library view; do not promise that it erases profile history.
- Private: hides most game-specific ownership, playtime and activity from other users while leaving the title available to you.
- Account removal: the exact treatment of historical data is not consistently documented; avoid claiming that all achievements or playtime are deleted.
A refund is a separate process. Steam’s refund FAQ warns that refunding a game does not automatically remove playtime or achievements from a Steam Community profile.
When a game is shared, free or an unusual library item
Steam Families and shared games
A title in your library may be available through Steam Families rather than owned by your account. Steamworks describes family-shared access as temporary access for the borrowing account. Hiding or removing that entry does not remove the lender’s license, and it may disappear when the family arrangement or lending account changes. Verify ownership before requesting account removal. Free-to-play games
Some free-to-play titles expose a direct Remove from Account option in the client; others require Steam Support. Hide the game when you only want a cleaner list. Availability varies by title and client.

These items can expose different management and Support choices. Do not assume that the removal workflow for a full game applies identically to every license type. Bulk selection may help with some hiding actions, but do not assume permanent account removal can be performed safely in bulk.

If a game has disappeared
- Confirm that you are signed into the correct Steam account.
- Clear library filters, categories and search terms.
- Check View → Hidden Games.
- Determine whether the entry came from Steam Families or another sharing arrangement.
- Review your purchase or license history.
- Search for the title in Steam Support.
- Contact Steam Support if the license still cannot be found.
The desktop client is the safest place to follow these steps. The web library and mobile app can use different menus, and an offline client may not show the private-game control until it reconnects.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Calling uninstalling “removing a game from Steam.” It only removes local files.
- Assuming Hide this game makes a title invisible to friends. Use Mark as Private.
- Assuming Private removes the title from your own library. It does not.
- Assuming “permanently remove” guarantees deletion of all records or guaranteed restoration.
- Trying to remove a borrowed game as though you owned its license.
- Looking for the hide control on the public store page; it is a library management action.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does uninstalling remove a game from my Steam account?
No. Uninstalling removes the local files only. The game remains licensed to your account and can normally be reinstalled.
Can friends still see a game I only hid?
Hiding changes your personal library view. To conceal ownership and most activity from other users, use Manage → Mark as Private.
Can I reinstall a game after hiding it?
Yes. Find it through View → Hidden Games and choose Remove from Hidden or Unhide.

Can Steam Support restore a removed game?
Sometimes Support may be able to reactivate a removed title, but Steam does not guarantee restoration. Check Support before repurchasing.
Is deleting my Steam account the same as removing one game?
No. Per-game removal affects one title’s ordinary access; deleting the account is a separate, much broader action.
The Bottom Line
Use Uninstall for storage, Hide for a cleaner personal library, Mark as Private for social privacy, and Steam Support removal only when you truly want the title deactivated from ordinary account access.
