You can host a continuous YouTube gaming stream on a VPS, but the server needs access to the gameplay video before it can send anything to YouTube. Decide whether the VPS will encode the game or relay an already encoded feed, configure a YouTube-compatible output, and use the current RTMPS server details and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room. A VPS keeps the server-side process running; it does not create gameplay by itself.
Choose how the game video reaches the VPS
Start with the source, not the server plan. The VPS must receive or access the game video, and that determines the hardware and network workload.
Game rendered on the VPS
This puts both the game and encoding on the server. It can require substantial graphics and compute resources, depending on the game and output settings. YouTube does not publish a universal VPS CPU, GPU, RAM, or bandwidth requirement, so do not treat any generic instance size as guaranteed to work.
Gameplay sent from a local gaming PC
The PC renders and captures the game; the VPS receives the feed and forwards it or encodes it for YouTube. If the VPS only relays an already encoded feed, its compute workload differs from software video encoding, though sustained network transfer remains important.

Console or separate-PC source
A capture card may be part of the source path when gameplay must be captured from a console or another PC. It is not a universal VPS requirement: if the gameplay feed is already available to the server-side encoding process, a capture card may not be needed. This is an architecture choice, not a YouTube mandate.
Configure YouTube Live and protect the stream key
- Create or select the live stream in YouTube Live Control Room. Use the current server URL and stream key shown there; do not rely on an old copied endpoint. YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance describes the stream formats and settings to use.
- Keep the stream key private. Treat it as a credential. Put it only in the encoder or relay configuration that needs it, and avoid exposing it in screenshots, public logs, or shared configuration files.
- Select RTMPS when your encoder supports it. YouTube recommends RTMPS for ordinary live content. It is RTMP carried through an SSL connection, and the documented connection uses port 443. Confirm the endpoint, application path, protocol, and port against the current YouTube details. See Google’s RTMPS ingestion guide.
- Choose whether to relay or encode. A relay forwards an existing encoded feed; an encoder produces the YouTube output from its input. Make sure your software is configured for the job you selected rather than assuming that sending a source to the VPS automatically produces a valid live stream.
Set encoder values for the gaming stream
Use the target resolution and frame rate to select a bitrate from YouTube’s official table, rather than treating one number as appropriate for every game. The YouTube encoder settings page lists bitrate ranges by resolution and frame rate.

- Codec: YouTube’s guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1.
- Frame rate: YouTube lists support up to 60 fps. Match the chosen output to the game capture and encoder capability.
- Rate control: Use constant bitrate (CBR), as specified in YouTube’s encoder guidance.
- Keyframes: Set a two-second interval; do not exceed four seconds.
- Bitrate: Select the entry for the exact output resolution and frame rate in YouTube’s table. A higher target requires a corresponding sustainable outbound connection from the VPS.
YouTube transcodes live input into different viewing formats, but that does not remove the need to send a valid source stream. HLS sends media segments and usually has higher latency than RTMP and WebRTC-based ingestion, so choose it only when it fits your encoder support and latency needs. Check the VPS and continuous-operation plan
There is no single VPS specification that fits every setup. First establish whether the server is encoding or only relaying, then validate the actual workload and provider terms before committing to a plan.

- Check the provider’s current included outbound transfer, egress charges, and sustained-use policies. A continuous video feed sends data for as long as it runs.
- For server-side encoding, verify that the selected instance can handle the game or incoming source and the chosen output settings. Test under the intended workload; YouTube’s guidance does not specify a VPS instance size.
- For relay-only setups, confirm that the VPS can sustain the required outbound bitrate and has a route from the source to the server.
- Plan process supervision, restart behavior, and alerting. These are operational choices, not guarantees or deployment steps prescribed by YouTube.
Bring the stream up and verify the whole path
- Make the gameplay source available to the VPS, whether it is generated there, sent from a gaming PC, or captured from a console.
- Start the relay or encoder with the selected codec, resolution, frame rate, CBR bitrate, and keyframe interval.
- Connect to the current YouTube RTMPS endpoint using the private stream key and correct application path and port.
- Check the source feed, encoder or relay health, and outbound connection. Then verify YouTube’s live preview and status before treating the stream as continuous.
- Leave the process supervisor and monitoring in place, and check that recovery and alerts work for your deployment before relying on it unattended.
Troubleshoot common VPS streaming failures
YouTube does not receive the stream
Check that the stream is active in Live Control Room and that the encoder has the current server URL, application path, RTMPS protocol, port 443, and matching stream key. A stale endpoint or key mismatch can prevent the connection.
The connection starts but the picture is unstable
Compare the configured bitrate with YouTube’s table for the selected resolution and frame rate, then check whether the VPS can sustain that outbound rate. Also confirm CBR and the recommended two-second keyframe interval, which must not exceed four seconds.

The VPS is online but there is no gameplay
Trace the source path separately from the YouTube connection. Confirm the game is being captured or rendered, and that the resulting feed reaches the VPS encoder or relay. The server cannot publish video it never receives.
The stream stops after running unattended
Check the process, source availability, network connection, and YouTube live status. Use a supervisor and monitoring appropriate to your setup so failures are visible and the process can be restarted according to your operational plan; neither YouTube’s guidance nor a VPS alone guarantees continuous operation.

Latency is higher than expected
Check the ingest protocol. HLS is segment-based and usually has higher latency than RTMP and WebRTC-based ingestion. Select a protocol supported by your encoder that also meets your latency needs.
