You can keep a podcast stream live on YouTube by running an encoder such as FFmpeg on a VPS, sending authorized audio or video to YouTube’s ingest server, and supervising the encoder so it can restart after a failure. A VPS gives the process a place to run continuously; it does not by itself guarantee that YouTube playback stays healthy. You need to check the encoder, the connection and the stream viewers actually see.
What you need before starting
This setup is for prerecorded or automated audio/video, not a live camera broadcast. Decide what viewers will see: a static image, a visualizer, a video recording or a sequence of podcast episodes. Confirm that the media plays correctly and that you have the rights to stream every recording, music track and visual element.
You will also need a VPS that can sustain the selected encoding workload and outbound traffic, storage for your source media, and access to administer and monitor the server. There is no universal CPU, memory or price requirement: suitability depends on the output resolution, whether the VPS must encode the media, provider bandwidth terms and your monitoring plan.
Choose how to run the encoder
FFmpeg on a headless VPS
For a repeatable file or playlist stream, FFmpeg can process media and send it to a network output without a graphical desktop. This generally means managing command-line settings, compatibility, logs, service startup and health checks yourself. FFmpeg’s muxer documentation includes an RTMP example designed to continue real-time processing through temporary failures and attempt recovery; that is an option to investigate, not a guarantee that every interruption reconnects cleanly or resumes the same YouTube broadcast. See the FFmpeg format and muxer documentation.

A graphical encoder on a VPS
A GUI encoder such as OBS may suit a workflow that needs scene switching, overlays or hands-on control. It also means managing a desktop session and checking that the provider’s graphics and encoding capabilities suit the workload. YouTube lists encoder software choices in its encoder setup guidance; that does not establish a particular OBS-on-VPS resource requirement.
Set up the YouTube stream
- Create or select a stream: In YouTube Studio, open Create and then Go live. Create a stream or select one in Live Control Room. Follow the on-screen steps if it is scheduled; creating a scheduled stream may require additional actions in Live Control Room.
- Copy the ingest details: Copy the server URL and stream key shown in Live Control Room into the encoder’s output configuration. YouTube’s encoder instructions say to enter the YouTube Live server URL and stream key into the encoder. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it, include it in public logs or share it. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
- Choose the transport and settings: Use RTMPS if your encoder supports it. YouTube describes RTMPS as a secure extension of RTMP. Select the resolution-specific bitrate from YouTube’s current live encoder settings and bitrate guidance, rather than copying a bitrate from an old tutorial.
- Start the encoder and verify: Start the service or encoder, then check Live Control Room for stream-health messages and open the YouTube player to confirm that audio and video are advancing as intended.
Match the output to YouTube’s encoder guidance
YouTube’s live settings page lists RTMP/RTMPS delivery; H.264, H.265/HEVC or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); and frame rates up to 60 fps. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says the interval should not exceed four seconds. The appropriate bitrate depends on resolution, so consult the current table for the output you actually choose. Platform recommendations can change.

Test with audio and movement representative of the planned stream, as YouTube recommends. For podcast audio over a still image, check that the audio is present and remains synchronized with any video; if you use motion or episode footage, test that representative material too. Watch YouTube’s stream-health messages during the test rather than relying only on the encoder’s local status.
Make the VPS process restart and remain observable
Run FFmpeg as a managed service, for example with systemd or an equivalent supervisor. Configure it to start on server boot, retain logs and restart after the encoder exits. This helps with a crashed process or reboot, but it cannot prove that the video reaching YouTube is healthy.

Check three separate things:
- Process uptime: Is the encoder process or service running? Review its status and recent logs.
- Transport health: Is the encoder continuing to send data to YouTube? Check encoder output and YouTube’s stream-health indicators.
- Viewer playback: Is the YouTube player advancing and producing sound? Check the actual watch page from a separate device or connection when possible.
These checks matter because a process can appear active even when playback has stalled. One operator’s VPS report describes that failure mode; it is a concrete implementation account, not evidence about how often it happens. A supervisor can restart a process that exits, but detecting a stalled stream requires a separate health check.
Plan for archives and continuous traffic
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement is not a promise that one uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast will produce a single complete VOD. If a complete archive matters, arrange an independent recording or divide the broadcast into manageable segments and verify the resulting recordings.

A continuous stream also means continuous server use and outbound network traffic. Before committing to a VPS plan, check its sustained bandwidth or egress terms, CPU performance for your chosen encoding mode, storage capacity for source files, regional network quality, and access for restarting and monitoring the service. Provider prices and limits vary; no particular plan or universal cost is established here.

| Symptom | Likely area to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive the stream | Ingest URL, stream key, encoder output configuration or connection | Compare the configured URL and key with the current values in Live Control Room. Keep the key private. Check encoder logs and YouTube’s stream-health messages. |
| The encoder exits | Process failure, server reboot or resource pressure | Inspect service status and logs, confirm the service starts on boot, and configure a restart policy. Check whether the VPS can handle the selected encoding workload. |
| The encoder is running but playback is frozen | Transport or viewer playback, not just process status | Check whether output is advancing, review YouTube’s stream-health messages and inspect the YouTube player independently. A running process alone does not confirm a healthy broadcast. |
| Audio or video is missing or wrong | Source media, codec or output settings | Play the source file, test with representative material, and check audio and video codec settings against YouTube’s current encoder guidance. |
| The stream stops and does not resume as expected | Network interruption, encoder recovery behavior or YouTube ingest state | Review the encoder and service logs, verify the current stream state in Live Control Room, and test recovery behavior before leaving the stream unattended. Recovery options do not guarantee that YouTube will resume the same broadcast after every interruption. |
