To host an HLS live stream, send a live feed to an encoder and HLS packager, serve the resulting playlist and media segments from an origin, deliver them over HTTP—often through a CDN—and give viewers a player that can open the viewer-facing .m3u8 URL. A CDN delivers a stream; it does not encode the source by itself.
How HLS hosting fits together
An HLS stream is a chain of components, not a single server setting. The source supplies live video and audio; an encoder creates one or more renditions; a packager produces the HLS playlists and media segments; an origin hosts those files; and a web server or CDN delivers them to viewers. A webpage or app then points an HLS-capable player at the public playback playlist.
- Source and ingest: A camera production chain or another live feed sends video and audio to the system.
- Encoding and packaging: The system encodes the input and creates HLS output. Adaptive-bitrate (ABR) output offers multiple renditions for players to choose between as network conditions change.
- Origin: The origin or packaging service exposes the playlist and segments.
- Delivery: A web server or CDN serves those assets to viewers.
- Playback: A webpage or client app opens the viewer-facing playlist URL.
Apple describes HLS as using ordinary web servers and CDNs, with playback adapting to network conditions. Its basic deployment pattern includes a receiver, a web server or CDN host, and a way to encode the source into fragmented media. See Apple’s HLS documentation and the HLS documentation index.
Choose an architecture for your stream
Managed cloud pipeline
For a managed AWS example, the documented workflow uses AWS Elemental MediaLive to encode the live feed into adaptive-bitrate outputs, AWS Elemental MediaPackage to package HLS and act as the origin, and Amazon CloudFront to deliver viewer requests. The viewer’s player uses the resulting viewer-facing manifest URL. AWS’s reference solution also describes two ingest feeds for redundancy, CloudFront authorization to MediaPackage with a CDN identifier, and a demo player for previewing the output. This is one vendor architecture, not the only valid way to host HLS. See AWS’s Live Streaming on AWS reference solution.

Software encoder with a separately managed origin
A smaller setup can use software such as OBS to send a feed to a custom streaming destination, then use a separately managed HTTP origin or CDN to serve HLS output. OBS documents hardware encoding as an option when the computer supports it; it is not a universal requirement. The available OBS guidance does not establish a complete self-hosted HLS recipe or capacity limits, so confirm that the chosen ingest destination, encoder, packager, and host work together before relying on this route. See OBS’s Quick Start Guide.
When comparing setups, account for who operates encoding and packaging, supported ingest and output protocols, redundancy and recovery, likely audience scale and geography, latency, access controls, operational effort, and costs for encoding, origin requests or storage, CDN delivery, and monitoring. A meaningful cost estimate needs a defined region, stream duration, audience, bitrate ladder, and latency requirement; there is no scenario-specific total established here.

Build and publish the HLS stream
- Choose the live source and ingest method. Decide what will produce the feed and how it will reach the encoder or managed service. AWS’s reference solution supports RTP, RTMP, HLS, or MediaConnect ingest; choose a method supported by the service you actually use. OBS can send to a custom streaming server.
- Encode and package the feed. Configure the encoding and packaging system to create HLS playlists and media segments. If you need ABR playback, provide multiple renditions so a compatible player can select among them as conditions change. In AWS’s example, MediaLive handles encoding and MediaPackage handles packaging.
- Expose the HLS output at an origin. Use a compatible web server or packaging service to make the playlists and segments available. Apple’s basic deployment permits an ordinary web server or CDN; in the AWS chain, MediaPackage serves as the origin.
- Add a CDN when viewer delivery calls for it. Configure it to route both parent manifests and media segments correctly. With the AWS MediaPackage and CloudFront pattern, follow AWS’s origin-authorization guidance rather than treating the CDN as an encoder.
- Give the player the viewer-facing URL. Use the delivered
.m3u8playlist URL, not an internal origin address viewers cannot reach. Apple describes an HTML5<video>element with an M3U8 source as a simple webpage pattern; a client app is another option. Browser and player support varies by target environment, so test the devices your audience uses. - Validate before sharing the stream. Run Apple’s HLS stream validator to simulate playback and check playlist and segment conformance. Then test the delivery URL in the intended player, verify picture and audio, and confirm any access controls. AWS’s reference setup describes a preview player, but that does not guarantee a particular deployment is configured correctly.
Configure CDN behavior, latency, and access
Standard HLS and Low-Latency HLS
Standard live HLS updates a playlist and delivers media segments over HTTP. Low-Latency HLS (LL-HLS) requires compatible origin, CDN, and player behavior; it is not achieved just by changing the player URL. In the AWS MediaPackage and CloudFront configuration, the cache policy must forward the _HLS_msn and _HLS_part query parameters used for blocking playlist requests. See AWS’s CloudFront live-streaming configuration guide. Do not assume a specific glass-to-glass delay without measuring the complete configuration.
Protect streams that should not be public
Anyone who can retrieve a public M3U8 URL may be able to access the stream. For protected delivery, design authorization into the origin and CDN path. In the AWS reference pattern, CloudFront is authorized to MediaPackage using a CDN identifier, and AWS recommends header-based MediaPackage CDN authorization. An obscure playlist path is not authentication. The cited sources do not establish a general DRM implementation recipe.

Troubleshoot common HLS hosting failures
- The player cannot load the playlist: Check that the player is using the viewer-facing
.m3u8URL, that the origin or CDN can serve it, and that access controls permit the request. - The playlist loads but playback stalls or fails: Verify that referenced media segments are also reachable and that CDN routing covers both manifests and segments. Validate playlist and segment conformance with Apple’s stream validator.
- Video works on one device but not another: Player and browser compatibility depends on the target environment. Test the actual delivery URL and player across the devices and apps your audience will use.
- LL-HLS requests do not behave as expected through CloudFront: In the documented MediaPackage/CloudFront path, check that the cache policy forwards
_HLS_msnand_HLS_part. - A stream intended to be private is accessible: Review origin and CDN authorization. Do not rely on an unlisted or hard-to-guess playlist path as the access-control mechanism.
- Playback quality does not adjust with changing connections: Confirm the stream actually contains the intended ABR renditions and that the chosen player supports the delivery format.
