How to Implement MegaTextures on Real Nintendo 64 Hardware

An N64 MegaTexture must be paged through RDRAM into the RDP’s small TMEM store. Here’s how to build the cache, stream pages, and test on real hardware.

You can implement a MegaTexture on a real Nintendo 64 by treating it as a collection of pages, not as one giant texture resident on the console. Keep the asset in ROM or supported SD storage, decode and cache the pages in RDRAM, then load only the page or subregion needed for drawing into the RDP’s small TMEM working store. The key engineering problem is keeping the right pages ready without letting reads, decompression, or uploads cause frame-time spikes.

What a MegaTexture means on the N64

A MegaTexture is a large logical texture assembled from smaller pages as the scene needs them. It does not mean that the RDP can sample an arbitrarily large image directly from cartridge ROM or RDRAM. The texture unit samples from TMEM; image data in DRAM must first be loaded there.

Nintendo’s 1999 N64 Programming Manual describes RDP texture memory as “a buffer capable of holding up to 4 KB worth of image pixels” in copy mode. Treat that as a mode-specific capacity statement, not a promise that any texture tile can use the full amount: format, row layout, alignment, palette data, filtering margins, and the chosen tile arrangement all affect what fits.

How to build the streaming path

Plan the asset pipeline and runtime together. A page that fits the chosen TMEM layout is only useful if the game can locate it, fetch it, decode it, and make it resident before the renderer needs it.

Retrotech Super 64 Plus 340 In 1 Multi Game Cartridge For N64 Video Game Console - Includes Retrotech Printed Instructions
  • 🎮 340 games in 1 cartridge for N64 console.
  • 🎮 Region Free, works on USA/EUR/Japan region N64 consoles.
  • 🎮 Includes Retrotech printed instructions for a classic feel.
  1. Prepare and page the source texture offline. Start with an atlas or a clipmap pyramid, then divide it into fixed-size pages. Choose each page’s decoded dimensions and texel format around the TMEM layout you intend to use. Account for row stride, alignment, palette data, and any extra neighboring texels needed by filtering. Generate an index with each page’s coordinates, compressed-data offset and length, and runtime residency state.
  2. Package pages in a source the game can read. The libdragon reference documents an in-ROM filesystem, SD-card access on flashcarts, transparent compression, streaming decompression, and decompression that can run in parallel with DMA. Its documented asset paths include rom:// and sd://. Keep the compressed asset in cartridge-accessible storage and decode pages into aligned RDRAM buffers; the RDP still needs the page loaded into TMEM before sampling it.
  3. Maintain an RDRAM page cache. Use an LRU cache or predict pages from camera movement and the texture coordinates of visible geometry. Each frame, determine the pages needed by visible surfaces, prefetch likely neighbors, and evict pages outside the working set. If RDRAM allows, double-buffer the decode and upload path so rendering can use one buffer while the next page is prepared.
  4. Load the required region into TMEM. Use the appropriate gDPLoadTextureTile_* operation to load a page or subregion from the larger DRAM texture. Nintendo’s gDPLoadTextureTile_4b macro takes source image dimensions and upper-left and lower-right tile coordinates; its 4-bit variant supports compact CI, IA, and I formats. Select the macro and layout for the actual texel format rather than assuming the 4-bit variant applies to every page.
  5. Draw against the resident page. Set tile descriptors and texture coordinates for the page currently in TMEM. If a primitive crosses a page boundary, split it or issue the additional tile loads required. Keep page changes explicit in the render path so geometry is not accidentally drawn using a different page’s contents.
  6. Measure the whole path on the target console. Track page misses, bytes read, decompression time, DMA wait time, TMEM upload time, RDP stalls, and frame time. Nintendo’s manual cautions that theoretical RDP rates are lower in practice because of memory latency and buffering overhead. Emulator timing by itself cannot establish performance on a retail console.

Choose page and cache policies deliberately

There is no single best page size or cache policy established for all games. The right choice depends on the texture format, filtering, camera behavior, storage path, and frame-time budget. Compare the alternatives using measurements from your own content and target setup.

Decision What to weigh Useful validation
Page dimensions and format Decoded footprint versus TMEM capacity; row alignment; palette needs; filtering margins; image quality. Confirm that every page layout fits the selected TMEM arrangement and inspect seams at page boundaries.
Cache policy LRU simplicity versus camera- or visibility-based prefetching; cache size versus RDRAM available to the rest of the game. Record misses during rapid turns and other worst-case camera movement, not only along a predictable path.
Compression and decode scheduling ROM footprint and transfer volume versus CPU or RSP work and the time available before a page is needed. Measure decode duration and whether it overlaps effectively with DMA on the target console.
Filtering and detail strategy Texture detail and page-edge quality versus the extra texels or additional levels your layout requires. Inspect boundaries and transitions while moving, including cases where neighboring pages become resident at different times.
Storage and tooling ROM or SD asset access, loader and debugging support, and the reproducibility of the test setup. Test the same build and asset package on the chosen cartridge and console, and retain logs for comparisons.

Use an SDK and loader that support the workflow

The libdragon project’s 2026 reference describes real-hardware targeting, an in-ROM filesystem, SD-card access on flashcarts, compression and streaming decompression, DMA-parallel decompression, and RDP graphics support. It lists 64drive, EverDrive64, and SC64 as known-working development cartridges for loading custom ROMs. USB-capable loaders such as UNFLoader, g64drive, and ed64 can provide debugging logs according to that reference. These are documented compatibility examples, not a guarantee that every product revision, setup, or feature behaves identically.

Kaico Edition SummerCart64 Open Source N64 Flash Cart with 64DD Support
  • Full N64 Console Compatibility - Compatible with all Nintendo 64 consoles across UK, US, EU, and JP regions. The SummerCart64 supports PAL and NTSC systems for reliable gameplay on original N64 hardware.
  • Open Source N64 Flashcart - Originally developed by Polprzewodnikowy, the SummerCart64 is an open-source N64 flashcart designed for homebrew development, ROM loading, and retro gaming enthusiasts seeking an EverDrive 64 alternative.
  • 64DD Support & Regular Firmware Updates - Compatible with Nintendo 64 Disk Drive games and regularly updated with new firmware improvements and features. Cheat support is planned for future Summer Cart 64 firmware revisions.
  • Genuine Approved Hardware Components - Unlike many resellers, Kaico follows the original BOM (Bill of Materials) specified by the creator to ensure full compatibility with future SummerCart64 firmware revisions, including the use of genuine 6TG chips for stable N64 flashcart performance.
  • MICRO SD STORAGE & KAICO WARRANTY - Load and manage Nintendo 64 games directly from a micro SD card with fast access and convenient storage expansion. Includes 12-month Kaico warranty support with repair and replacement coverage.

Choose libdragon’s stable or preview branch with API stability in mind: preview APIs may change. The project identifies Ares as an emulator that accurately covers advanced hardware paths used by libdragon homebrew, which can help with development, but final timing claims still need measurements on the console.

Validate real-console behavior, not just successful rendering

A texture may look correct in a short emulator run and still fail under real storage latency or fast camera motion. Test both image correctness and the timing of page availability on the hardware configuration you intend to support.
