How to Import Schematics into Minecraft (Java and Bedrock)

Match the schematic's extension to your Minecraft edition and loader, then follow the right workflow to paste it, load it, or use it as a building guide.

To import a Minecraft schematic, first match its file extension to your game edition and the tool that can load it. In Java Edition, use WorldEdit to paste .schem or legacy .schematic files, Litematica to display a .litematic building guide, or a vanilla structure block to load an .nbt structure. Bedrock Edition uses .mcstructure files and structure blocks. The steps differ: some methods place the build for you, while others show where to build it yourself.

Choose the workflow that matches your file

Check the file extension before moving or renaming anything. An extension alone does not guarantee that a structure is compatible with your Minecraft version, but it helps identify the appropriate loader.

Game and workflow File type What happens
Java Edition with WorldEdit .schem or legacy .schematic WorldEdit pastes the structure into the world.
Java Edition with Litematica .litematic A hologram guides you as you build; it does not paste the whole build into survival.
Java Edition with a vanilla structure block .nbt The game loads a saved structure through a structure block.
Bedrock Edition with a structure block .mcstructure The game loads a saved structure through a structure block. Microsoft documents a file-picker Import button for the Windows game version.

Java and Bedrock do not support every block in common, and a file made for a newer Minecraft version may contain blocks your target world cannot use. If you know the file’s source version, compare it with the version in which you plan to load it.

Java Edition: paste a schematic with WorldEdit

WorldEdit is the direct-paste option for .schem files and many older .schematic files. Its default schematic folder depends on the server or mod platform. WorldEdit 7.4 documentation lists config/worldedit/schematics/ for non-Bukkit platforms and plugins/WorldEdit/schematics/ for Bukkit, Spigot, or Paper. The folder may not exist until you save a schematic; you can create it yourself. See the WorldEdit clipboard documentation for its file and command workflow.

  1. Put the file in the correct folder. Copy the schematic into the WorldEdit schematics folder for your platform. Keep the original file extension.
  2. Load it in game. Run //schem load <filename>, replacing <filename> with the file name without its extension. For example, a file named castle.schem is loaded as //schem load castle.
  3. Stand where you want the build and paste. Run //paste. WorldEdit places the schematic in relation to its saved origin and offset, so the result may not be centered on the block you are standing on.
  4. Preserve blocks in empty areas, if needed. The practical guide describes //paste -a as a way to avoid replacing existing terrain with air in empty parts of the schematic. Try it in a spare world if the paste could affect an important build.

On a server, you may need WorldEdit permission, and server rules may limit the size of a paste. If the placement is wrong, reposition and paste again; WorldEdit documents //undo for reversing the latest operation.

How to handle old .schematic files

WorldEdit’s current Sponge schematic format uses .schem. WorldEdit documentation explains that it replaced the older .schematic format with WorldEdit 7, corresponding to Minecraft 1.13. WorldEdit can import legacy .schematic files through a compatibility layer, but it cannot save new files in that old format. Renaming a file does not convert it; use a loader that supports the format it actually contains. See WorldEdit’s format documentation.

Java Edition: load a building guide with Litematica

Choose Litematica when you want an in-game projection to follow rather than an automatic paste. Put the .litematic file in .minecraft/schematics/, open the Litematica menu, select Load Schematics, choose the file, and load it. The resulting hologram shows the structure’s intended placement. Build into the world by following the projection; the practical guide describes Easy Place mode for creative building.

Java Edition: load an .nbt file with a structure block

For the vanilla structure-block workflow described in the practical guide, place the file under saves/<world>/generated/minecraft/structures/, using the folder for the world you intend to load it in. In a creative world with cheats enabled, obtain a structure block, switch it to Load mode, enter the structure name without the extension, preview it, and load it. The guide reports a per-structure size limit of 48×48×48 blocks; confirm the limit for your exact Minecraft version if your structure is close to that size.

Bedrock Edition: import an .mcstructure file

Microsoft defines .mcstructure as a Minecraft structure saved using the Structure Block tool. Its documented Import button is limited to the Windows game version, and the import succeeds only when you host the world. In that workflow:

  1. Place a structure block and set it to Load mode.
  2. Click Import and select the .mcstructure file in the file picker.
  3. Review the structure bounds populated by the game and adjust the offset if necessary.
  4. Click Load to place the structure.

These platform and host requirements are specified in Microsoft’s Introduction to Structure Blocks. For other Bedrock setups, a practical guide describes placing structures in a world’s structures/<namespace>/ directory and loading them by namespace and name. Treat this as a platform-dependent fallback: access to world folders can be restricted on phones and consoles.

Fix common import problems

  • The file does not appear: Check that it is in the folder used by the selected tool, and look for an accidental extra extension such as .schem.txt.
  • The file loads but blocks are missing or wrong: Check the schematic’s source version and whether it was made for Java or Bedrock. A block unavailable in the target game may not load as intended.
  • The WorldEdit paste is in the wrong place: The saved origin and offset affect placement. Try a different standing position; use //undo to reverse the latest paste if needed.
  • A server refuses the paste: Check whether you have the required permission and whether the server restricts large pastes.
  • The loader rejects the file: Confirm that the extension matches the loader. WorldEdit’s modern .schem and legacy .schematic formats are different; changing the file name does not change its format.

What to check before importing

Before loading a file into a world you care about, confirm the edition and platform, the file extension, the Minecraft version it was made for, and whether you want a direct paste or a building projection. Also check placement, permissions, and any requirements of the selected workflow, such as hosting the Bedrock world for Microsoft’s documented Import process. If you are troubleshooting a specific file, the useful details are its extension, your edition and platform, your game version, and the tool you are using.
