If you’re playing The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered on PC and performance is poor, first turn off NVIDIA HairWorks and retest the same scene. CD PROJEKT RED says HairWorks may significantly affect performance, though its October 1, 2026 PC hotfix also reverted a change that had caused HairWorks-related performance and visual problems for some players. Treat this as a diagnostic check, not a guaranteed fix. Then adjust resolution, drivers, game files, overlays and background apps one change at a time.
Check which edition and build you’re running before following older “best settings” guides: Remastered released September 29, 2026, and its PC Hotfix 5.00c followed on October 1. CD PROJEKT RED’s Remastered announcement and Hotfix 5.00c notes describe that current context.
Start with a repeatable performance check
Before changing settings, note your output resolution, graphics options, HairWorks state, approximate frame rate and what the stutter looks or feels like. Choose a repeatable scene—ideally the same location and activity—and compare after each change. This makes it easier to tell whether an adjustment helped; frame rate can vary with the scene, gameplay, system, settings and output resolution, so one result should not be treated as a universal benchmark.
Confirm whether you’re using Remastered and whether Hotfix 5.00c is installed. CD PROJEKT RED’s FAQ says reverting to an earlier version may be possible depending on platform, but don’t assume every storefront offers the same downgrade path. See the Remastered FAQ for version information.

Test HairWorks first
Turn NVIDIA HairWorks off, then replay the same scene and compare. CD PROJEKT RED’s live support notice says enabling HairWorks may significantly affect performance and recommends disabling it until the issue is addressed. The October 1, 2026 hotfix separately reverted a change that caused significant performance and visual issues with HairWorks enabled for some users. The hotfix addressed that regression; it does not make HairWorks a no-cost setting for every PC.
Find the HairWorks option in the game’s graphics settings. If disabling it makes no meaningful difference in your comparison, restore it if you prefer the effect and continue troubleshooting. The official notice is CD PROJEKT RED’s HairWorks performance notice.

Reduce the number of pixels the GPU must render
If frame rate remains low, lower the game’s output resolution or try an available resolution-scaling option. A lower resolution reduces the pixel workload, but can make the image look softer. Resolution scaling renders at a lower resolution and upscales the image toward the selected output, which can preserve more apparent detail than simply lowering output resolution; the result depends on the game build, scaling implementation, settings and hardware.
CD PROJEKT RED illustrates the workload difference with two resolutions: 5120 × 2880 contains 14,745,600 pixels, while 2560 × 1440 contains 3,686,400. The first has approximately four times as many pixels to render, but that does not mean frame rate will be exactly four times lower. This is a pixel-count example, not a measured Witcher 3 benchmark. Work through software troubleshooting
CD PROJEKT RED recommends these steps for low frame rates, choppy performance and long loading times. Apply them separately where possible so you can identify any change:
- Clean-install your graphics driver. Use the driver installer’s clean-install option if available. If the problem started immediately after a driver update, install a previous driver version and report the issue to CD PROJEKT RED.
- Verify the game files. Use your storefront’s file-integrity or verification feature; the exact label and path vary by platform.
- Disable overlays. Turn off overlays from game launchers and other software, then compare performance.
- Close unnecessary applications. Exit background programs, including monitoring tools, before testing again.

Check storage and system requirements if stuttering persists
Current Remastered-era PC requirements say an SSD is required for the latest technical enhancements and associate SSD storage with faster loading and smoother asset streaming. If the game is installed on an HDD, a compatible SSD is worth investigating, particularly if the problem involves loading or assets appearing during play. The requirements do not establish that an SSD guarantees a higher frame rate or will fix every stutter.
The same requirements page says Windows 10 is no longer officially supported or tested; it does not say the game necessarily stops working on Windows 10. Check the current PC requirements against your system. Remastered adds visual features, including PC path tracing, so settings advice from older releases may not describe current behavior. There is no single verified graphics preset here that suits every PC.

Send useful details if the problem continues
If performance remains poor after these checks, report the issue to CD PROJEKT RED. Include your game version, the changes you tried and a video if possible. If the issue happens only in a particular location, the support team asks for the relevant save file as well. That evidence can help distinguish a general performance problem from one tied to a specific scene.
