If the hitch happens only at first launch or the first time an effect appears, shader compilation may be involved; otherwise, identify whether the issue is low frame rate, uneven frame delivery, or a recurring hitch before changing more settings or considering hardware.
Start with a repeatable test
Choose a scene or route you can repeat, and use it to compare each change on the same PC. Note whether performance is consistently low, frames arrive unevenly, or a hitch occurs at a particular first-use event. These patterns can point toward different causes, but they do not identify a cause on their own.
If the demo provides an official benchmark or support instructions, use those when available. Otherwise, keep the scene, settings, and test conditions as consistent as practical. Change one or two options, retest, and record what improved and what worsened.
Adjust demanding graphics settings gradually
Open the demo’s own graphics menu: settings and their names vary by game. Riot Games Support recommends lowering a few demanding options, testing, and then raising individual settings to find a suitable balance. It notes, “There’s no single perfect setup for every PC.” Riot’s guidance is general advice, not a preset tailored to this unspecified demo.

- Shadows: Try a lower quality level or disable them if the demo allows it.
- Effects, particles, and post-processing: Reduce these options to test whether visually busy scenes become smoother.
- Environment, detail, or material quality: Lower the available setting incrementally rather than changing every quality option at once.
- Anti-aliasing and image-enhancement effects: Test a lower level or turn an effect off, then compare both smoothness and image quality.
- Texture quality: Test a lower setting if available; its impact depends on the game and system.
Test resolution as a separate trade-off
Reducing resolution can lessen rendering work, but makes the image visibly less sharp. Compare the performance change with that loss of image quality before deciding to keep it.
Try fullscreen and VSync deliberately
Fullscreen mode may help on some systems. VSync synchronizes the frame rate with the monitor to help prevent screen tearing. Turning it off may improve performance or reduce input delay in some cases, but can make tearing visible. Test both settings in the same scene and keep the combination that works best for your display and preferences.

Consider shader compilation if the timing fits
Some games compile shaders at launch or just in time during play. That work can lengthen loading or cause hitches, particularly around first launch or first use of an effect. Microsoft explains that precompiling shaders can reduce just-in-time compilation stutter, but this possibility does not establish that shader compilation is causing a particular demo’s symptoms.
Check whether a vendor feature applies
Shader precompilation features are not universal fixes. Microsoft’s Advanced Shader Delivery is a Windows 11 Direct3D 12 technology that depends on supported Windows, GPU, driver, and storefront integration. Intel’s precompiled-shader feature has its own eligibility conditions: supported Intel hardware, a supported game installed through Steam, a qualifying driver, an internet connection for the initial download, and at least 1 GB of disk space. Intel says game support can vary by driver and updates, so check its current feature requirements rather than assuming the demo qualifies.
For titles affected by background shader compilation in AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition 26.9.2, AMD recommends allowing approximately 15 minutes of gameplay before measuring performance and excluding the first run of each new benchmark session. This is AMD’s guidance for affected titles while compilation completes—not a universal waiting period. Consult the Adrenalin 26.9.2 FAQ if you use that feature.

Keep shader-related claims in perspective
Microsoft’s DirectX Developer Blog reported an approximately 95% reduction in shader compilation time for Gears of War: E-Day under its announced Advanced Shader Delivery setup. That is a game- and setup-specific compilation-time claim, not a general frame-rate improvement or a result for this demo. Intel’s cited support page estimates 20–50% faster initial loading times for its feature, with results varying by game and system; this is not an FPS promise. Neither figure predicts what an unsupported or untested demo will do.

Performance can be constrained by different parts of a system. Microsoft’s developer guidance discusses CPU and GPU limits, memory, file-processing overhead, and shader compilation; high resolution and pixel-shader demand can contribute to GPU limits. Use the repeatable test to establish what happens when you lower relevant settings. If a change improves the problem, it is useful evidence about the workload, but not by itself proof that a particular component needs replacing. Without the demo identity, PC specifications, and signs of a specific limit, there is no sound basis to recommend a new graphics card, processor, memory kit, SSD, cooling part, or peripheral.
