To make Xbox Series X racing games feel smoother, first find out whether the hitch occurs in one game or across several, then test the game mode and display connection one change at a time. A 120 Hz console output does not make every game run at 120 frames per second, and VRR can smooth variable frame delivery without fixing a game-side performance problem.
First work out where the stutter happens
Note the exact game and update, the mode you are playing, and whether the problem appears in menus, replays, solo events, or online races. Record the track or event and how long it takes for the hitch to start. Then check whether another racing game shows the same behavior.
- Only one game, mode, or update: That points toward a title-specific issue, though it does not prove the cause.
- Several games, including offline play: Check the console’s display settings and the full HDMI connection path.
- Online races only: Compare a repeatable solo event. If the issue is confined to multiplayer, note that distinction rather than assuming a display setting will fix it.
Forza Motorsport players have reported frame-rate drops and “micro stutters” in particular versions and modes, but those reports are anecdotal and varied. They do not establish a widespread Series X defect or a proven fix; the old Forza forum pages now redirect. Forza Support publishes release notes and FAQs, and its Feedback Portal is the route Forza identifies for bug reports.
Compare the game’s available performance modes
If the game offers a performance-oriented mode, compare it with its quality mode in the same repeatable section. The trade-off depends on the individual game; not every racing title offers the same modes, and selecting Performance does not guarantee that every hitch will disappear.

Keep the game’s frame rate separate from the console’s output refresh rate. Xbox Series X supports output up to 120 Hz, but the game and its selected mode determine how many frames it renders. Microsoft describes 120 FPS as an option developers can use, not a setting that makes every title run at 120 FPS. Xbox’s explanation of latency, frame rate, VRR and ALLM covers those capabilities.
Check that the display and HDMI path support your settings
- On the Xbox, open Settings > General > TV & Display Options > 4K TV details to see which features the connected display reports as supported.
- Check the TV or monitor manual to confirm which HDMI input supports the resolution, refresh rate and features you want. Some displays offer 120 Hz only on selected ports or at selected resolutions.
- Install available firmware updates for the TV or receiver, and check the manufacturer’s documentation for port-specific behavior.
- For a diagnostic test, connect the Series X directly to the TV or monitor with the Ultra High Speed HDMI cable supplied with the console, temporarily bypassing a receiver or switch. If you later restore a passthrough device, confirm that every device and cable in the path supports the intended signal.
Microsoft recommends checking the display’s reported capabilities, using a capable input and trying a direct connection when troubleshooting. The supplied cable is the sensible first test; a replacement is relevant only if it is missing, damaged, or the connection path is otherwise suspect—not as a general remedy for game-specific frame drops. See Xbox’s 4K TV setup guidance.

Test VRR, refresh rate and ALLM separately
If your display supports variable refresh rate (VRR), compare the same scene with VRR on and off. VRR can reduce tearing and make changing frame delivery look smoother on compatible equipment, but it does not increase the game’s frame rate or repair poor game-side frame pacing. Microsoft says VRR presents missed frames with the lowest possible latency; it also notes that 120 Hz VRR TVs typically have broad timing windows for tear-free presentation above 40 FPS. These are Microsoft’s descriptions of display behavior, not a promise that VRR removes all stutter in a particular game. Microsoft’s technical overview explains the feature.
Change one setting at a time and replay the same section so you can identify what helped. If VRR causes visual corruption, Xbox guidance is to turn it off; for some display problems, try setting the console to 60 Hz. ALLM is different: on a capable TV, it can automatically switch the display into Game Mode to address display latency, but it does not fix a game’s frame pacing.
