Slime-chunk spawns do not require darkness; swamp spawns depend on light and moon phase. Bedrock rules can differ by version, so do not assume Java’s exact thresholds apply.
Choose the method that fits your goal
A slime-chunk farm offers a repeatable underground source once you locate the right chunk and prepare spawning space. Swamp collection avoids the need to excavate a chunk but depends on biome, height, lighting, and—on Java—the moon phase.
| Factor | Slime chunk (Java guidance) | Swamp or mangrove swamp (Java guidance) |
|---|---|---|
| Main requirement | The correct seed-dependent chunk, with spawning below Y=40 | The biome and spawning band from Y=51 through Y=69 |
| Lighting | Darkness is not required for slime-chunk spawning | Light level 7 or lower |
| Timing | No moon-phase condition stated | Most frequent on a full moon; none on a new moon |
| Preparation | Identify the chunk and make a suitable underground platform | Find the biome and collect under favorable conditions |
How to improve a Java slime-chunk farm
1. Confirm the chunk for your world
Slime chunks are determined by world seed and chunk coordinates. Use a finder configured for Java Edition and the relevant version, then verify the result in-game if you are unsure. A finder for another edition or a different seed can point you to the wrong place.
2. Build below the height limit
The cited Java mechanics reference places slime-chunk spawning below Y=40. Make the spawning platform under that level and keep its surface clear, with enough open space for slimes to spawn and be moved away. Darkness is not a slime-specific requirement for this method.

3. Reduce nearby competition without expecting a guaranteed rate
Other spawnable spaces nearby can compete for hostile-mob spawning opportunities. Lighting nearby caves and other suitable spaces may reduce that competition, but no fixed improvement is established here. Keep the farm platform unobstructed and ensure your position and world settings permit natural spawning. Exact player distances and mob-cap behavior depend on edition and version, so there is no universal AFK distance to apply.
How to collect slimes in a swamp
Use Java’s height, light, and moon conditions
In Java guidance, swamp and mangrove-swamp slimes can spawn from Y=51 through Y=69 when the light level is 7 or lower. They are most frequent during a full moon and do not spawn on a new moon. For a more productive outing, search within that height band, check the light conditions, and plan around the moon phase.

Do not carry Java thresholds over to Bedrock
Microsoft’s official Bedrock spawn-rule sample describes controls such as biome tags, difficulty, brightness, height, and population limits, but it is creator documentation rather than a player-facing survival guide. Mojang’s historical issue record, MCPE-156411, documents past Bedrock slime-rule problems and Java-parity expectations; it was resolved in Preview 1.19.10.23, so it should not be read as proof that the old bug persists. Check current version-specific behavior rather than assuming the Java Y-level and light conditions apply unchanged.
Why you may be seeing few or no slimes
- Wrong chunk or seed: The location may not be a slime chunk, or the finder may be set to the wrong edition, version, or seed.
- Incorrect height or blocked space: The platform may be outside the relevant height band or lack clear valid spawning space.
- Competing spawn areas: Nearby caves or other eligible spaces may be using spawning opportunities. Spawn documentation describes density limits, but does not establish a universal percentage increase from cave lighting.
- Unfavorable swamp moon: On Java, a new moon prevents swamp slime spawns; a full moon is the most favorable phase.
- Edition, difficulty, or world settings: Java and Bedrock behavior is not interchangeable. Microsoft’s Bedrock sample includes a difficulty filter spanning Easy through Hard; check that the target version and settings allow the natural spawns you are seeking.
What affects spawn opportunity—and what is not guaranteed
Official Microsoft documentation describes general entity-spawning controls including biome, brightness, height, difficulty, and density. Those conditions help explain why a farm’s location, open space, and nearby spawnable areas matter, but they are not a slime-rate calculator. No qualifying measured spawn-rate statistic or controlled farm comparison is established here, so a particular farm layout or cave-lighting effort cannot be promised to produce a specific number of slimeballs per hour.
