Before using an RTX 4090 after a move, shut down and unplug the PC, then check that the card is secure, undamaged and properly connected to power. Start it only if those checks look normal; if you find physical damage or the system continues to lose display or crash, stop and contact the card’s manufacturer.
1. Make the PC safe to inspect
- Shut down the operating system normally. Switch off the power supply if you can reach its switch, then unplug the AC power cord.
- Wait for the fans and lights to stop before opening the case. Follow the computer maker’s instructions for removing the side panel.
- Before touching internal parts, touch the bare metal frame of the unplugged system to discharge static. Hold the graphics card by its edges; avoid its gold PCIe contacts and exposed circuitry.
These handling steps reflect NVIDIA’s general RTX Ada quick-start guidance, not a 4090-specific transport manual. Follow the instructions for your exact card and PC if they differ.
2. Check whether the card shifted or was damaged
Use good light and inspect the card without dismantling it. Do not remove the cooler for a routine post-move check.
- Slot and bracket: Check that the card is aligned and seated in the motherboard’s PCIe slot, and that the case bracket sits flush with its screws in place.
- Support: Look for a displaced anti-sag support and check whether the card appears to have sagged or shifted. If you use a replacement support bracket, verify it fits both the card and case and supports the card at a suitable point; it cannot repair physical or electrical damage.
- Card body: Look for a bent backplate, cracks, scratches, impact marks, visibly loose or displaced components, and broken fan blades. Check that the fans are unobstructed and do not appear to be rubbing against a cable or other part.
MSI lists examples such as deformed backplates, broken fan blades, cracked PCBs and impact damage to PCB components in its customer-induced damage guidance. ASUS also describes PCB-trace and component damage. These examples indicate when a card may need assessment; they do not determine warranty eligibility.

3. Inspect the GPU power connection
Check the power plug, socket and cable route. Look for a loose connection, damaged pins or housing, sharp bends immediately beside the connector, or a cable that can touch a fan. Confirm the plug is fully and evenly seated according to the instructions for your specific card and cable. Do not force it or use modular PSU cables that were not made for that power supply.
NVIDIA’s November 2022 RTX 4090 support update said incomplete insertion was a common issue in its investigation and recommended a firmly and evenly seated connection. The update also described connecting the power dongle to the card before installing the card in the motherboard as an installation aid. It reported about 50 cases globally at that time; that dated figure is not a current failure rate or a measure of your risk.

Do not power on the PC if the plug or socket looks scorched, melted, cracked or otherwise damaged. Stop here and contact the manufacturer of the exact card model.
4. If the inspection is clear, check boot and display
Reconnect the power cord and start the PC only if the card, slot and power connection look normal. Check for an ordinary boot, GPU detection in the operating system and stable monitor output from a display cable connected to the graphics card.

If there is no display, check that the monitor is on the correct input and that the display cable is connected securely. Then shut the PC down and unplug it again before rechecking the card seating and power connections. MSI’s general graphics-card troubleshooting guidance also describes cross-testing with integrated graphics or another PC, where available. A cross-test can help narrow down where a problem lies, but it does not by itself identify the failed component.
5. Know when to stop and seek service
Do not keep restarting the system or load-testing the card if you see a cracked PCB, detached components or connector damage, notice an unusual smell, or continue to get display loss or crashes after basic checks. Photograph visible damage before disturbing the card further, and note the exact board partner and model printed on the card or its documentation.

Contact the manufacturer responsible for that specific card. An NVIDIA Founders Edition and a partner-made RTX 4090 can have different service routes, and coverage depends on the product and region. NVIDIA’s listed warranty applies to NVIDIA-branded cards; ASUS and MSI handle their own products through their service processes. MSI says improper-use damage may lead to a repair estimate or warranty denial, while ASUS says customer-induced damage repairs can involve parts and labor charges. Neither outcome can be determined from appearance alone: MSI states that the service center makes the actual assessment.

NVIDIA lists the Founders Edition reference card at 304 mm long, 137 mm wide and 61 mm thick (three slots). Partner-card dimensions vary, so those measurements do not establish the clearance or support needs of every RTX 4090. Identify your exact model before checking fit in the case or choosing a support bracket.

For the reference configuration, NVIDIA lists 450 W total graphics power and 850 W minimum system power, noting that system power needs depend on the configuration. These figures are not diagnostic readings or universal PSU requirements for partner cards; use the instructions and specifications for your own card and system.
