Download it from a trusted source, extract the entire archive to a permanent folder, read the included instructions, and then run either the supplied installer or the game executable. Do not launch the game from inside the ZIP, and do not separate the executable from its data files.
What “installing a game in a ZIP file” actually means
A game distributed as .zip can work in one of two ways:
- Extract and run: The archive contains a portable game. There may be no formal installation process.
- Extract and install: The archive contains a setup program that installs the game and may create shortcuts, prerequisites, or an uninstaller.
For example, an archive might contain:
Game.zip
└── Game folder
├── Game.exe
├── Data
├── Saves
└── README.txtThat is probably a portable Windows release. Another archive may contain only Setup.exe, which means you must extract the archive and run the setup program.
Extracting is the important first step because games commonly rely on neighboring DLL files, asset folders, configuration files, and other data. Running only the visible executable—or launching it while it remains inside the ZIP—can cause errors or prevent saves and settings from working.

Check these things before extracting
- Source: Prefer the developer, publisher, or a reputable storefront. A familiar
.zipextension does not make a download safe. - Platform: Confirm whether the archive is for Windows, macOS, Linux, or SteamOS.
- Architecture: Check whether it requires 64-bit, ARM64, or an older 32-bit system.
- Package type: Make sure it is the complete game rather than a demo, mod, patch, expansion, source-code package, or emulator file.
- Requirements: Check the game’s hardware, graphics API, runtime, launcher, and base-game requirements.
- Archive parts: Look for files such as
Game.zip,Game.z01, andGame.z02. Keep every part together. - Free space: You need room for the original ZIP, the extracted files, temporary extraction data, updates, shader caches, and saves. The ZIP’s displayed size is not the final space requirement. Apple notes that insufficient storage can prevent an archive from expanding.
Windows may warn about files downloaded from the internet through Attachment Manager or SmartScreen. Verify the source and scan the download before opening it; do not bypass a warning simply because the game is well known. See Microsoft’s Attachment Manager guidance.
How to install a ZIP game on Windows
Use File Explorer
- Open the folder containing the download, usually Downloads.
- Right-click the
.zipfile and select Extract All…. - Choose a destination folder, then select Extract.
- Wait for extraction to finish. Do not open the game until the process is complete.
- Open the resulting folder and read
README.txt,README.md,INSTALL.txt, or the developer’s instructions. - If you see
Setup.exe,Install.exe, or an.msifile, run that installer. - If there is no installer, open the correct game
.exefrom the extracted folder.
Microsoft documents Extract All and drag-and-drop extraction in its Windows ZIP instructions. For games, extracting everything is preferable to copying out a single executable because it preserves the expected folder structure.
Where should you extract it?
A user-owned folder is usually the safest default:
C:GamesGame Nameor:
%USERPROFILE%GamesGame NameAvoid using Program Files for a portable game unless its installer selects that location. Protected folders can cause access-denied errors when a game needs to write saves, logs, settings, or mods. Do not use Run as administrator unless the installer or developer specifically requires it.
Extract with PowerShell
Expand-Archive -LiteralPath "$HOMEDownloadsGame.zip" -DestinationPath "$HOMEGamesGame Name"To replace files in an existing destination:
Expand-Archive -LiteralPath "$HOMEDownloadsGame.zip" -DestinationPath "$HOMEGamesGame Name" -ForceReplace the filename and folders with the actual paths. Keep the quotation marks when a path contains spaces.

Use 7-Zip when Windows needs help
Ordinary ZIP files generally need no additional software. A reputable utility becomes useful for encrypted, multipart, RAR, 7z, or unusual archives, or when built-in extraction reports an error. 7-Zip is a free, open-source option. After installing it, this command extracts the archive while preserving its folder paths:
"C:Program Files7-Zip7z.exe" x "C:UsersYourNameDownloadsGame.zip" -o"C:GamesGame Name"The x operation is preferable to extracting only one selected file. Windows 11 version 24H2 supports additional archive formats through built-in tools, but encrypted archive operations may still require third-party software.
How to install a ZIP game on macOS
- In Finder, double-click the ZIP file.
- macOS expands it in the same folder.
- Open the extracted folder and read the included instructions.
- Open the supplied
.app, or open a.dmgand follow the developer’s instructions. Some releases include a separate Mac installer.
Apple explains that macOS Gatekeeper checks applications downloaded outside the App Store, including developer identification, changes to the application, notarization where applicable, and known malware signals. If macOS says the developer cannot be verified or the app is damaged, first re-download the correct Mac build and confirm its source.
Do not disable Gatekeeper globally. If a trusted developer documents a specific exception, Control-click that verified app, choose Open, and follow the security prompt. How to install a ZIP game on Linux or Steam Deck
Graphical method
- Open your file manager and locate the ZIP.
- Right-click it and choose Extract Here or Extract To….
- Open the extracted directory and read the README.
- Identify the Linux executable or the launcher script supplied by the developer.
- If necessary, open Properties > Permissions and enable Allow executing file as program.
- Launch the intended file from the file manager or terminal.

A Windows .exe is not automatically a Linux game. It may need Steam Proton, Wine, Lutris, Bottles, or a developer-provided compatibility setup—and it may still be incompatible. A native Linux build is the simplest option. On Steam Deck, add the game to Steam only if you understand the required Proton configuration and the developer or community documentation supports it.
Games are platform-specific: itch.io notes that individual games may support only one or two operating systems even though its app supports Windows, macOS, and Linux. See its platform FAQ.

The largest file is not necessarily the launcher. The README and the developer’s release notes take precedence. If the archive contains Windows, macOS, and Linux folders, use the build matching your system.

Portable game versus installed game

Some portable releases still require separate runtimes. “Portable” describes how the game is packaged, not a guarantee that it includes every dependency.
Create a shortcut after it works
- Windows: Right-click the game executable, choose Show more options > Send to > Desktop (create shortcut), or use Create shortcut. Leave the original folder intact.
- macOS: Move or copy the trusted application to a suitable location such as Applications, or add it to the Dock. Do not move individual files out of the application bundle.
- Linux: Create a desktop launcher only after confirming the executable path and permissions. The README may provide the correct command and working directory.
How to uninstall a ZIP game
For a portable game, back up saves and delete the complete extracted folder. Also check common save locations such as your user profile or Documents folder; deleting the game folder may not remove those files.
For an installer-based game, use its included uninstaller or your operating system’s app settings. Do not assume that deleting the visible installation folder is a complete uninstall.

- Download from the official developer, publisher, or a reputable store.
- Avoid pirated repacks, cracks, key generators, and suspicious “fix” files.
- Scan the ZIP and extracted executable with your system’s antivirus.
- If the developer publishes a SHA-256 checksum, calculate and compare it character-for-character.

shasum -a 256 Game.zipDo not disable antivirus or operating-system protections just because an unofficial download is blocked. If Windows blocks a file, verify its source, scan it, and inspect its digital signature first. Microsoft recommends unblocking downloaded files only when they came from a trusted source.

Common ZIP-game problems and fixes

An archive utility may be able to list an archive even when extraction later produces data or CRC errors. A successful file listing does not prove that every file is intact. Fully extract the archive and investigate any error. For unusual archives, consult 7-Zip’s archive-error guidance.
Do you need 7-Zip, WinRAR, or a game launcher?
For a normal, trusted ZIP, Windows File Explorer, macOS Finder, and most Linux file managers are sufficient. Use 7-Zip as a free Windows fallback for formats or features built into your system’s extractor less reliably.
WinRAR is another option for RAR files, split archives, encryption, repair features, and users who prefer its interface. Its official site currently advertises version 7.22, a trial, and a perpetual-license purchase option; it is unnecessary for one ordinary ZIP.
A managed storefront launcher can be more convenient than manual extraction because it may handle updates, install locations, cloud saves, dependencies, shortcuts, and uninstalling. itch.io’s app is one example for supported games, but it is an installation manager rather than a required ZIP utility. Direct ZIP releases can offer more control and portability, while launcher-managed installations generally require less manual maintenance. See itch.io’s installation documentation.
