Use the game’s official mod channel or a trusted platform’s official project page or app, verify the exact mod and file, and treat scan results as helpful evidence—not a guarantee. Avoid unsolicited downloads and stop if a file contains unexpected programs or triggers an antivirus alert. Because installation steps vary by game, follow that game’s own instructions rather than relying on a universal folder path.
Choose a trustworthy source before you download
Start at the game’s official mod channel, if it has one. Otherwise, find the mod through the platform’s official project page or app. Check that the page, game, mod name, author, and file version match what you intended to install. A familiar platform name does not authenticate a separate link or file: Steam warns that malware can be disguised as gaming-related tools, including mod managers. - Avoid mirror downloads when the mod is available from its official project page.
- Be wary of unsolicited links or ZIP files sent by direct message, claims that a download is required for early access, or pressure to join a server or install immediately. CurseForge describes these as social-engineering warning signs aimed at Minecraft players in its modpack safety guidance.
- Do not run a file just to find out what it does. Unexpected executables, unfamiliar JARs, or files unrelated to the mod are reasons to stop and verify.
Check the specific file and its scan status
A project page can contain multiple files, versions, or updates. Verify the file you are about to download—not just the project’s reputation—and read any available scan status or report. On Nexus Mods, badges communicate the result of its checks; the site’s virus-scanning guidance, last updated December 31, 2024, defines them this way:

Hosting and scanning reduce uncertainty but cannot establish that every file is safe. The platform may have different checks for downloads made through its app or website than for files imported from elsewhere.

Review archives and imports before installing
If the platform lets you inspect an archive or imported pack, look at its contents before launching or importing it. Stop if you find unfamiliar JARs, unexpected executable files, or material that does not seem related to the mod. Do not disable security software to make an unexpected file run.
For CurseForge, the distinction between a direct download and an externally supplied import matters. In a May 14, 2026 safety article, CurseForge Blog author PatrickJr. wrote: “We cannot scan or verify modpack files sent to you by your friends and imported via the CurseForge app, but we do scan all files that you download directly through our app or website for malware and malicious code.” Read the full CurseForge safety guidance. Importing a file into an app does not make an externally supplied archive verified.

Install using the game’s instructions
There is no single safe installation folder or sequence for all games. Mod formats, supported tools, and installation requirements differ. Follow the instructions for the specific game and mod, and use the game’s supported mod channel or the platform’s documented installation flow where available. If the instructions direct you to download a separate tool, verify that tool through its own official source before installing it.
Keep Windows and security protection current
Keep Windows, your browser, apps, and antivirus up to date, and leave real-time protection enabled. Microsoft recommends using trusted download sources and current security and system updates; modern Windows versions include Microsoft Defender Antivirus. What to do if antivirus flags a mod
Do not dismiss a detection because a mod is popular or hosted on a familiar platform. Mod files can sometimes trigger false positives, but an alert still deserves investigation. Check the exact detection name and details, review the platform’s file status, and contact the platform or antivirus provider for guidance. Nexus Mods discusses false positives and notes that newly uploaded files from newly registered users can warrant extra caution in its scanning guidance.
- Leave protection on; do not create an exclusion or turn off antivirus as your first response.
- Check the file’s platform status and the antivirus product’s specific detection details.
- Ask the platform or security vendor to assess a suspected false positive before deciding whether an exception is appropriate. Steam likewise advises users to take detections seriously and consult their antivirus provider in its antivirus guidance.
- If you suspect unwanted software, update Microsoft Defender’s security intelligence and run a full scan. Microsoft lists an offline scan as a further step if the problem persists; follow its malware-response instructions.
