You can install a Minecraft Java modpack without the CurseForge app by importing a compatible downloaded pack archive into another launcher, such as Prism Launcher. In Prism, choose Add Instance → Import and select the pack’s .zip or .mrpack archive. This avoids the CurseForge app; it is not the same as manually copying files into a vanilla Minecraft profile.
Install a compatible pack archive with Prism Launcher
- Check the pack’s official page. Confirm its Minecraft version, mod loader, and any publisher-specific installation or archive instructions. A pack made for one loader is not automatically compatible with another.
- Download the archive from the publisher’s project or version page. Use the pack’s official download rather than a rehosted or unrelated file.
- Import it in Prism Launcher. Open Add Instance, choose Import, then select the downloaded compatible
.zipor.mrpackfile. Prism documents this route for manually downloaded compatible pack archives: Prism Launcher’s modpack import guide. - Check the resulting instance before playing. Verify that its Minecraft version and loader match the pack’s stated requirements. Prism’s loader documentation explains instance loader configuration; for Fabric, it notes that Fabric API is required by most Fabric mods: Prism Launcher’s mod-loader guide.
If import fails, the archive may not use a format Prism can import. The Import option is not a guarantee that every ZIP from every platform is supported.

Use the Modrinth App for a Modrinth pack
For a pack published on Modrinth, you can use the Modrinth App: find the pack and select Install. Modrinth describes its app as the preferred solution and also lists MultiMC, Prism Launcher, and ATLauncher as third-party client options for Modrinth packs. Those documented routes apply to Modrinth packs; they do not establish that every pack from every platform will work in each launcher. Why extracting a .mrpack into .minecraft is not a universal install
A .mrpack is a ZIP-format archive with a modrinth.index.json file at its root. The index describes the pack’s files, their instance-relative destinations, download URLs, and dependencies such as the Minecraft version and mod loader. An archive may also contain an overrides directory, whose contents are copied into the instance during launcher installation. Modrinth explains the format in its pack-structure documentation.

Because the archive includes metadata, dependencies, and destination paths, simply extracting everything into .minecraft or copying files into .minecraft/mods can put files in the wrong place or omit required setup. The Modrinth specification also warns implementers to prevent archive paths from escaping the instance directory; download packs from their publishers and do not open untrusted archives. What if I want to copy the files by hand?
There is no single documented copy-and-paste procedure that applies to every pack, operating system, launcher, and loader. Follow the pack publisher’s instructions for the specific pack. At minimum, the Minecraft version and loader must match, and any configuration or override files need to reach their intended locations. Some packs do not provide an archive or files intended for direct manual installation.

- Do not treat renaming
.mrpackto.zipas an installation method. - Do not assume every file belongs in the
modsfolder. - Do not download indexed files one by one as a generic substitute for a launcher that processes the pack metadata.
If your goal is only to avoid the CurseForge app, importing a compatible archive into Prism—or using the Modrinth App for a Modrinth pack—avoids that manual file handling.

The publisher’s format and instructions matter as much as the launcher: a route documented for Modrinth packs does not prove compatibility for a pack hosted elsewhere.
