On a compatible Chromebook, install the official Minecraft: Bedrock Edition app from Google Play. It is the regular mobile/Bedrock version—not Java Edition or Minecraft Education. Your Chromebook must support Android apps, and a school- or work-managed device may block installation.

Which Minecraft edition works on Chromebook?

The normal official route is Bedrock Edition through Google Play. Minecraft identifies Bedrock as the edition available on Chromebook, while Java Edition is the PC version designed for Windows, macOS, and Linux. See the official Minecraft edition comparison.

  • Bedrock: The recommended Chromebook version. It is installed as an Android app and supports cross-play with Bedrock players on Android, Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, and Windows.
  • Java Edition: Not the standard Chromebook installation. It may be possible through ChromeOS Linux, but setup and performance vary considerably.
  • Minecraft Education: A separate product for schools, educators, organizations, and eligible trials. It is not a replacement for ordinary Survival or Creative Minecraft.
  • Minecraft Classic: A limited browser experience, not the modern Minecraft game.

Before installing: check your Chromebook

1. Update ChromeOS

Install available system updates first. Google’s Android-app instructions require an up-to-date ChromeOS installation. Select the time in the lower-right corner, open Settings, then go to About ChromeOS and check for updates. Restart when prompted.

2. Check for Google Play

  1. Select the time in the lower-right corner.
  2. Open Settings.
  3. Select Apps.
  4. Choose Manage Google Play preferences.
  5. Follow the prompts and accept the Google Play Terms of Service.

Google Play is available only on some Chromebooks. If Manage Google Play preferences is missing, the model may not support Android apps, ChromeOS may be outdated, or an administrator may have disabled the feature. Check Google’s Chromebook Android-app instructions and device and administrator guidance.

The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.

On a personal Chromebook, you can usually enable Google Play yourself if the hardware supports it. On a school or work Chromebook, only the administrator may be able to enable apps, approve purchases, or permit multiplayer. Some ChromeOS devices enrolled in the extended-updates program can lose Android-app and Google Play support; see Google’s extended-updates information.

How to install Minecraft Bedrock on Chromebook

  1. Open the Play Store from the Chromebook Launcher.
  2. Search for Minecraft.
  3. Select the listing published by Mojang, currently titled Minecraft: Dream it, Build it!.
  4. Confirm that the listing is available for your Chromebook.
  5. Select Buy or Install.
  6. Wait for the download and installation to finish.
  7. Open Minecraft from the Launcher.

The Google Play listing showed a U.S. price of $6.99 in August 2026. Prices, taxes, regions, promotions, and account-specific offers can change, so use the amount displayed in your own Google Play listing.

Do not download a random APK if the official listing is unavailable. Sideloaded copies can create security, licensing, update, and support problems, and they do not solve an incompatible Chromebook or a school administrator’s restriction.

Sign in and start playing

Google Play and Minecraft use different account roles:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Your Google account handles the Play Store purchase and app installation.
  • Your Microsoft account connects your Minecraft identity and enables features such as cross-platform play, Realms, Marketplace access, parental controls, and social features.

On first launch, sign in with the Microsoft account associated with your Minecraft friends, Realms, Marketplace content, and other eligible purchases. Minecraft’s account guidance explains the current account requirements.

After signing in:

  1. Select Play.
  2. Create a new world or select an existing local world.
  3. Choose a mode such as Survival or Creative.
  4. For online play, add friends through the Microsoft/Xbox account system or join an eligible Realm or Bedrock server.

Depending on the Chromebook, you may be able to use its keyboard and trackpad, touchscreen, mouse, or a compatible controller. A mouse is usually more precise than a trackpad for building and combat, but controller compatibility can vary by device and setup.

Can Chromebook players play with friends on other devices?

Yes—when everyone is using compatible Bedrock versions and the necessary accounts and multiplayer settings are enabled. Chromebook Bedrock can play with Bedrock players on Android, Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, and Windows.

Java and Bedrock multiplayer are not interchangeable in ordinary circumstances. A friend playing Java Edition on a PC cannot automatically join a Chromebook Bedrock world simply because both games are called Minecraft.

What happens if you already own Minecraft?

What you own What it means on Chromebook
Android Minecraft Use the same Google account and check the current Play Store offer. Google announced Chromebook availability with a discounted path for existing Android owners, but the exact offer should be verified in your account rather than assumed.
Minecraft Java & Bedrock for PC The PC license does not automatically turn every Chromebook into a supported PC Java or PC Bedrock device. The official Chromebook consumer route is the Android/Bedrock app.
Minecraft on Xbox, PlayStation, or Switch Your Microsoft account can provide account identity and Bedrock cross-play, but the Chromebook app’s purchase is handled through Google Play.
Marketplace content or Realms Sign in with the same Microsoft account to retrieve eligible account-linked content and access eligible Realms features. This does not mean every platform purchase transfers.

Keep these separate: the Google Play license, a PC license, a console license, your Microsoft account, Marketplace purchases, and a Realms subscription are related but not identical entitlements.

Minecraft Education on a Chromebook

Minecraft Education is intended for schools, educators, eligible organizations, and classroom learning. It has separate downloads, accounts, licensing, and deployment tools. Schools can deploy it through managed Google Play and the Google Admin Console.

Use Education when you need lessons, classroom controls, coding activities, or an organization’s approved educational license. A family seeking ordinary Minecraft Survival or Creative should install the consumer Bedrock app instead. Education may offer a trial, but ongoing use can require a qualifying account or license.

Can you play Java Edition on a Chromebook?

Java is not the standard official Chromebook route. Advanced users can investigate ChromeOS’s Linux development environment, but that is a separate project involving launcher setup, authentication, files, and ongoing maintenance. Google documents the setup at Settings → About ChromeOS → Developers → Linux development environment → Set up.

Linux Java performance is not guaranteed. Google’s Linux documentation notes that hardware acceleration, including GPU and video decode support, is not yet supported in that environment. Java-on-Linux therefore should not be presented as equivalent to native Bedrock, especially on lower-powered Chromebooks. See Google’s Linux environment documentation and do not assume that a third-party launcher will work well on a particular model or ChromeOS release.

If Java mods or Java-only servers are your priority, a conventional Windows, macOS, or Linux computer is generally the more predictable choice.

Troubleshooting Minecraft on Chromebook

“Manage Google Play preferences” is missing

First update ChromeOS and restart. Then determine whether the Chromebook is school- or work-managed. If it is, ask the administrator whether Android apps are permitted. If the device is personal, check whether its model supports Android apps. An extended-update configuration may also have removed Play support.

Minecraft is unavailable in Google Play

Possible causes include an incompatible Chromebook, restricted account, incomplete Play Store setup, unsupported configuration, or regional availability. Confirm that you selected the Mojang listing and that Google Play identifies the app as compatible. If it remains unavailable, there may be no supported official installation route for that device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The installation is stuck or the app will not open

  • Check your internet connection and available storage.
  • Restart the Chromebook.
  • Install ChromeOS and Minecraft updates.
  • Confirm that Google Play is signed into the intended account.
  • On a managed Chromebook, ask the administrator whether app installation is restricted.

Minecraft runs slowly or crashes

Chromebooks range from low-powered school machines to much faster modern systems, so performance is not uniform. Close unused browser tabs and Android apps, restart ChromeOS, keep the game updated, and lower render distance or graphics settings. Keep adequate free storage and test whether a mouse, touchscreen, keyboard, or controller provides better input.

Enabling Linux will not automatically improve Bedrock performance, and it is not a guaranteed fix for a weak device. For consistently poor performance, a newer compatible Chromebook or another gaming platform may be a better solution.

Microsoft sign-in or multiplayer does not work

Check that you are using the intended Microsoft account, that parental controls permit multiplayer, and that both players are running compatible Bedrock versions. School networks may filter Minecraft services, and a Realm or server may support Bedrock but not Java. For account-specific issues, use Minecraft’s official account guidance.

Is a Chromebook good for Minecraft?

For most Chromebook owners, Bedrock from Google Play is the practical choice. A newer compatible Chromebook can provide a convenient Minecraft experience, while an older or low-powered model may need reduced settings or may not support the app at all.

The device may still be unsuitable if a school administrator blocks Google Play, regardless of its hardware. Java modding, Java-only servers, and demanding performance are better served by a conventional PC. Cloud gaming services such as Xbox Cloud Gaming or GeForce NOW can be alternatives for broader gaming, but they require reliable internet and are not the simplest replacement for installing Chromebook Bedrock.
