To install the Steam version of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, open it from your Library in Gaming Mode, choose Install, then select Play when the download finishes. Steam’s current support listing calls for 60 GB of available space; check the game’s live Steam Store page for its current Deck compatibility label before you start.

Install the Steam version on your Steam Deck

  1. In Gaming Mode, open Library and select The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.
  2. Choose Install. If Steam asks where to install it, select a storage location with enough free space.
  3. Wait for the download and installation to finish.
  4. Open the game’s Library page and choose Play.

Steam identifies CD PROJEKT RED as the game’s developer and publisher. Its current support listing specifies 60 GB of available space and notes that the system requirements changed on September 29, 2026. Check the listing for the latest requirement before installing: Steam Support.

Check whether the game is compatible with your Deck

Steam assigns games one of four Steam Deck compatibility labels: Verified, Playable, Unsupported, or Unknown. A Playable game may need manual configuration; Unknown means Steam has not tested it. The specific label can change, so check The Witcher 3’s current Steam Store page rather than relying on an older rating or assuming a particular result. Steam explains the categories in its Steam Deck compatibility guide.

What to do if the game will not launch

Start with Steam’s general troubleshooting guidance. These steps are not a confirmed, game-specific fix:

Valve Steam Deck OLED 1TB Handheld Gaming Console
  • 1TB NVMe SSD
  • 1280 x 800 HDR OLED display with premium anti-glare etched glass, 7.4" Diagonal display size up to 90Hz refresh rate
  • Wi-Fi 6E
  • 50Whr battery; 3-12 hours of gameplay (content-dependent)
  • Carrying case with removable liner
  1. Install any available SteamOS updates, then restart the Deck and try launching the game again.
  2. If it still fails, open Library, highlight the game, press the Menu button, and choose Properties > Compatibility.
  3. Enable Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool, then try the latest Proton version available in the client.

Steam’s general launch troubleshooting is described in its Steam Deck basic-use guide and compatibility troubleshooting guide. If the game launches but performance is poor, Steam suggests trying a lower graphics preset or reducing individual settings. There is no verified best preset, frame-rate target, or battery estimate established here.

Choose storage if you are short on space

First compare the game’s 60 GB available-space requirement with the Deck’s current free space. If internal storage is insufficient, a compatible microSD card is one optional way to expand it—not a requirement for every player. Valve specifies a high-speed microSD slot supporting UHS-I SD, SDXC, and SDHC cards in the Steam Deck technical specifications. Check capacity, price, and expected load-time trade-offs for your own library before buying; the available specifications do not compare particular cards.

Check Steam Cloud before switching devices

Steam lists Steam Cloud as a feature for the game. Before moving between your Deck and another device, let synchronization finish and confirm its status in Steam. The feature listing alone does not confirm that a particular save has uploaded or is ready on another device: see The Witcher 3 on Steam.
