For Minecraft: Java Edition on PC, the easiest modern route is Iris with Sodium. Install the Iris profile, download a shader pack that matches your Minecraft version, place its .zip file in the shader-pack folder, and activate it from the video settings. Minecraft: Bedrock Edition uses a separate route: on supported Windows hardware, it can use built-in ray tracing with compatible resource packs. Java shader loaders such as Iris and OptiFine do not work with ordinary Bedrock installations.
First, check which Minecraft Edition you have
| Edition | How shaders work | Use this guide |
|---|---|---|
| Java Edition | Use a shader loader such as Iris or OptiFine, then add a compatible shader pack. | Follow the Java instructions below. |
| Bedrock Edition | Use built-in ray tracing on supported Windows hardware with compatible content. | Skip to Bedrock ray tracing. |
In the official Launcher, select the Java Edition installation rather than Minecraft for Windows. Use a stable release unless you deliberately need a snapshot. If you test snapshots or experimental mod setups, back up important worlds first; Mojang warns that snapshot installations can corrupt worlds.
Shaders also require a capable graphics processor. Minecraft’s current Java requirements target 1080p at 30 FPS on minimum hardware and 1080p at 60 FPS on recommended hardware, but those are baseline targets for ordinary gameplay—not guarantees for demanding shader packs. See the official Java system requirements.
What Minecraft shaders actually are
A shader pack changes how Minecraft renders the scene. Depending on the pack, it may add dynamic shadows, improved sunlight and ambient lighting, reflections, better water, volumetric clouds, fog, god rays, bloom, depth of field, waving vegetation, color grading, or parallax and physically based material effects.

Keep these terms separate:
- Shader loader or mod: Iris or OptiFine. It provides the system that loads shader packs.
- Shader pack: The visual preset itself, normally distributed as a
.zipfile. - Resource pack: Changes textures and sometimes material data. It is not automatically a shader pack.
- Ray tracing: A separate Bedrock rendering feature, usually paired with compatible physically based resource packs.
Minecraft’s internal shader systems are not the same thing as installing a conventional pack through Iris or OptiFine. Mojang has also noted that overriding core shaders through resource packs is unsupported and may change as the game evolves.
Best method for Java Edition: Iris + Sodium
Iris is the strongest default for many current Java players because its installer can set up Iris and Sodium together. Iris says it supports Minecraft versions from 1.16.5 onward, although the installer and individual shader packs may support fewer versions. Iris supports Fabric and, for newer versions, NeoForge; it does not support Forge.
Download Iris from the official Iris website or its official download page. Avoid repackaged launchers, generic “shader installers,” and executable files presented as shader packs.
1. Choose the Minecraft version
Decide which stable Minecraft release you intend to play. The version selected in the Iris installer, the Launcher profile, and the shader pack’s compatibility information must agree. Do not blindly copy a version number from an old guide: releases and shader support change over time.
2. Install Iris and Sodium
- Download the Iris installer
.jarfrom the official site. - Open the installer.
- Select the Minecraft version you want to use.
- Choose Iris + Sodium.
- Confirm the Minecraft directory if the installer asks.
- Complete the installation.
If the .jar does not open, confirm that Java is installed and associated with .jar files. On Windows, you can try opening it through the installed Java runtime or launching it from Command Prompt. Confirm that the download completed correctly and re-download only from the official Iris source. Do not rename a file extension to force it to run. Third-party launchers should use their own supported instance or mod-management workflow.
3. Launch the new Iris profile
Open the Minecraft Launcher, select the newly created Iris installation, and start the game once before adding a shader pack. This tests Iris and Sodium independently.
At the title screen, open Options → Video Settings. You should see a shader-related menu, usually labelled Shader Packs. If the profile is missing, restart the Launcher, check the Installations tab, and confirm that Iris was installed into the same Minecraft directory the Launcher uses. Custom launchers may use an instance-specific directory instead of the global .minecraft folder.

Use the shader creator’s official page or a reputable host such as Modrinth or CurseForge. Before downloading, check:
- Supported Minecraft versions
- Iris compatibility
- Required resource packs or add-ons
- Known mod and hardware incompatibilities
- Recommended performance tier
- That the download is a shader-pack archive, normally a
.zip, rather than an executable installer
For example, the Sildur’s Basic Shaders listing provides separate Iris and OptiFine instructions. “Supports OptiFine” does not guarantee that every effect behaves identically under Iris.

5. Put the shader pack in the correct folder
- Start Minecraft with the Iris profile.
- Open Options → Video Settings → Shader Packs.
- Click Open Shader Pack Folder.
- Copy the shader pack’s original
.zipfile into that folder. - Return to Minecraft and select the pack.
Do not extract the ZIP. The in-game folder button is the authoritative method because launchers can use custom directories. Standard folders are:
- Windows:
%APPDATA%.minecraftshaderpacks - macOS:
~/Library/Application Support/minecraft/shaderpacks - Linux:
~/.minecraft/shaderpacks
6. Activate and configure the pack
Select the pack and wait while Minecraft compiles its shaders. The game may freeze briefly during compilation. Enter a test world and check daylight, nighttime, water, clouds, shadows, and caves. Open the shader pack’s own settings menu and begin with its Low, Fast, or Performance preset if frame rate is poor.

Installing shaders with OptiFine
OptiFine remains useful for existing OptiFine installations, legacy setups, or shader packs and features that specifically require it. It is not the universal modern answer, and it should not be installed alongside Iris in the same profile.
- Download the matching version from the official OptiFine website.
- Run the OptiFine installer.
- Launch the created OptiFine profile.
- Open Options → Video Settings → Shaders.
- Click Shaders Folder.
- Copy the shader pack’s
.zipinto that folder. - Select the pack and wait for compilation.
Iris lists OptiFine, Canvas, and Vulkan rendering mods as incompatible with Iris. Keep separate profiles rather than mixing competing renderers. Forge-based modpacks that need shaders may use a different solution such as Oculus, but compatibility depends on the exact modpack and versions.
How to choose a shader pack
Choose by compatibility and performance rather than by screenshots alone:
- Loader: Confirm Iris or OptiFine support.
- Version: Match the exact Minecraft release where possible.
- Performance tier: Lightweight packs suit integrated graphics; cinematic packs can overwhelm powerful GPUs.
- Visual style: Decide whether you prefer realistic lighting, vivid colors, enhanced-default visuals, or dramatic effects.
- Resource packs: Check whether the pack expects PBR or other material add-ons.
- Mod compatibility: Look for notes about rendering mods, Distant Horizons, Voxy, and other special integrations.
- Source: Prefer the creator’s official page or a reputable project host. A shader pack should normally be an archive, not an executable.
Improve FPS when shaders are slow
Shaders add rendering work. Sodium may improve the underlying game’s performance, but enabling a shader can still reduce FPS substantially. Lower settings in this order:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Change the shader preset from Ultra or Extreme to High, Medium, or Fast.
- Reduce shadow resolution.
- Lower render distance and shadow distance.
- Disable or reduce volumetric clouds, fog, and light shafts.
- Lower reflection and water quality.
- Reduce ambient occlusion.
- Disable bloom, depth of field, motion blur, and other screen-space effects.
- Lower resolution or enable the pack’s upscaling option, if available.
- Reduce resource-pack resolution and PBR/material effects.
Do not treat extra system RAM as the main shader fix. Shaders are usually constrained by GPU rendering workload rather than Java heap size. More RAM can help a large modpack or world, but it does not automatically increase shader FPS.
On a laptop, plug in the charger, make sure Minecraft is using the discrete GPU, and monitor temperatures. Compare FPS with shaders disabled. If vanilla performance is already poor, shader settings are not the underlying problem.
Common problems and fixes
No “Shaders” or “Shader Packs” button
Likely causes: You launched vanilla Minecraft, installed Iris or OptiFine for another version, are using Bedrock, installed into the wrong launcher instance, or have a conflicting rendering mod.

- 3.6-slot design with massive fin array optimized for airflow from three Axial-tech fans
- Phase-change GPU thermal pad helps ensure optimal thermal performance and longevity, outlasting traditional thermal paste for graphics cards under heavy loads
Fix: Quit the game, select the correct Iris or OptiFine profile, test a clean profile, remove competing renderers, and confirm that the loader supports the selected Minecraft version.
The shader pack does not appear
Likely causes: The ZIP was extracted, it was placed in resourcepacks instead of shaderpacks, you opened the wrong instance directory, the download is not actually a shader pack, or the archive is nested inside another ZIP.
Fix: Use Open Shader Pack Folder from the running profile. Place the original shader ZIP directly in that folder. Do not put it inside another folder or archive, then restart or refresh the shader list.
The game crashes when selecting a shader
Likely causes: Version mismatch, loader incompatibility, outdated graphics drivers, a conflicting rendering mod, unsupported GPU features, or settings that are too demanding.
- Relaunch without the shader pack.
- Try a lightweight, known-compatible pack.
- Update graphics drivers from the GPU manufacturer.
- Remove other rendering-altering mods.
- Reset the shader configuration.
- Lower the preset and shadow settings.
- Read the shader creator’s compatibility notes.
- Test the pack in a fresh instance.
Iris notes that some shader packs may not support particular devices. If the problem follows one pack into a clean installation, contact or consult that pack’s developer documentation.
Visual glitches
Unsupported shader features, incorrect resource-pack order, mod conflicts, outdated drivers, or a pack designed primarily for OptiFine can all cause glitches under Iris. Check the pack’s documented compatibility list instead of assuming that general OptiFine support means identical Iris support. Snapshots and unreleased versions are especially likely to expose compatibility problems.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Bedrock Edition and ray tracing
Do not install Iris, Sodium, or OptiFine for ordinary Bedrock Edition. Bedrock uses a different graphics and content system.
On Windows, the official alternative is Minecraft’s built-in ray tracing with compatible ray-tracing resource packs or Marketplace content:
- Install or update Minecraft for Windows through the official Launcher or Microsoft ecosystem.
- Confirm that the PC has a supported DXR-capable GPU.
- Obtain compatible ray-tracing content, such as a suitable resource pack or Marketplace world.
- Open the world or apply the resource pack.
- Enable the ray-tracing graphics option when it is available.
- Reduce render distance and other settings if performance is poor.
Ray tracing is not the same as installing a Java shader ZIP, and it does not automatically make every Bedrock world ray-traced. Hardware and compatible content are both required. Minecraft’s official PC information lists examples including the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060, AMD Radeon RX 5600 XT, Intel Arc A580, and Apple M2 Pro, but support can depend on the exact system and content.

On consoles, mobile devices, and most non-Windows Bedrock platforms, do not present Java shader-loader instructions as an equivalent solution. Be cautious with “shader APKs,” unofficial mobile shader apps, or tools claiming to install Iris on ordinary Bedrock devices.
Safety and multiplayer questions
Download from the shader creator’s official page or a reputable project host. A shader pack should normally be a ZIP archive; treat unexpected executable files as suspicious and scan them before opening. Never install a random “shader installer” just to load a visual pack.
Shaders are generally client-side visual changes, so other players usually do not need the same pack to see your effects. However, modded clients, server rules, and resource-pack requirements can complicate particular multiplayer setups. Check the server and pack documentation when using special integrations.
