How to Install and Safely Run Community-Made StarCraft Bots

A practical guide to installing community StarCraft bots with BWAPI, checking bot-specific requirements, and running unfamiliar files more safely.

For the classic BWAPI setup, install Brood War 1.16.1 and BWAPI, place the bot’s compiled module in the game’s bwapi-data/AI folder, then launch through Chaoslauncher with the BWAPI injector enabled. That path is version-specific: check the bot’s own instructions for its required game and BWAPI versions, file type, runtime, and operating system before running it. Treat any downloaded bot or helper as executable code, not as a trusted game mod.

Choose the right StarCraft bot setup

Community bots are not all packaged for the same environment. The classic BWAPI quick start documents Brood War 1.16.1 on Windows with Chaoslauncher; community bots may instead be Java JARs, DLLs, or builds for another implementation. Start with the bot’s README and release notes, not a generic installation recipe.

Path What the documented setup involves Check before proceeding
Classic BWAPI on Windows BWAPI’s quick start names Brood War 1.16.1, BWAPI, the game installation, and Chaoslauncher. The example bot module is placed in bwapi-data/AI. BWAPI quick start Exact game and BWAPI version, whether the bot is a DLL or uses a Java bridge, and the launcher configuration.
Java through BWMirror A community Java tutorial describes BWMirror as a Java wrapper for BWAPI and provides a legacy 1.16.1 setup. BWMirror Java tutorial Bot-specific Java version and architecture requirements, BWMirror compatibility, and packaging. The tutorial’s 32-bit Java guidance is legacy; verify it against the bot’s current instructions.
Other operating systems or implementations SSCAIT discusses WINE, Docker, and virtual machines for running games or compiling bots, and identifies OpenBW as an alternative. SSCAIT tutorial SSCAIT platform notes Whether you are running an existing competition binary or developing/testing, and whether that binary targets the chosen game implementation. OpenBW-targeted binaries are not immediately compatible with the classic 1.16.1 setup, according to SSCAIT.

Install a bot in the classic BWAPI setup

  1. Confirm compatibility. Check the bot’s documentation for the supported StarCraft version, BWAPI version, operating system, and any required runtime. BWAPI’s example explicitly uses Brood War 1.16.1 and warns to select StarCraft 1.16.1 rather than ICCup 1.16.1 for its launcher setup. BWAPI quick start
  2. Get the bot from a source you can assess. Prefer a repository or release page with identifiable maintainers, a history of releases, and installation instructions. For example, Stardust’s project repository is a place to inspect a bot project, not a security endorsement. Check that the files you download match the project’s published instructions.
  3. Install the matching game and BWAPI components. Follow the bot’s own steps first; BWAPI’s classic quick start describes installing Brood War and BWAPI, then using Chaoslauncher. Its target is the named legacy version, not any StarCraft installation by default. BWAPI quick start
  4. Place the bot artifact where the instructions expect it. For the documented BWAPI example, put the compiled AI module in the game installation’s bwapi-data/AI directory. A Java bot or a bot with helper files may need a different arrangement; do not assume every download belongs in that folder.
  5. Launch through the documented injector. Start the game with Chaoslauncher and enable its BWAPI injector, as described in the BWAPI quick start. The example instructions cover play against the built-in AI and local multiplayer. BWAPI quick start
  6. For Java, follow the bot’s runtime instructions. SSCAIT’s tutorial describes JAR and DLL submissions and a Java bot waiting for the game connection. That does not establish one Java version as suitable for every bot, so use the version and architecture specified by that bot. SSCAIT tutorial

Reduce the risk of running unfamiliar bot code

A bot DLL, JAR, launcher, or helper program is executable code. Setup instructions explain how a bot connects to the game; they do not certify that arbitrary downloads are harmless. BWAPI’s default interface limits what an AI module can learn from the match, but that is a game/API boundary, not a protection for files or credentials on the computer.

BWAPI states that “BWAPI only reveals the visible parts of the game state to AI modules by default.” Those defaults can be changed; its documentation says changed defaults are advertised when a match begins unless tournament rules enforce them. This describes in-game information access, not whether a bot’s code is safe. BWAPI documentation

  • Inspect the source when available and review the maintainer, release history, file names, and installation instructions. A public repository is useful for evaluation but is not proof of safety.
  • Scan downloaded files with reputable security software and compare their names and expected contents with the project’s release instructions.
  • For an unfamiliar executable, prefer a disposable virtual machine or a separate Windows account with no personal files or credentials available to it. Isolation reduces exposure; it is not a guarantee.
  • Do not grant administrator privileges by default. SSCAIT says elevated privileges may be needed on some systems when troubleshooting a connection problem; use that only as a targeted diagnostic step, not as routine setup. SSCAIT tutorial

Troubleshoot common launch and compatibility problems

The bot does not connect to the game

Recheck the bot’s runtime and game/BWAPI compatibility, then confirm the correct launcher and injector are enabled. SSCAIT notes that administrator privileges may help on some systems with connection troubleshooting. If you test that possibility, do so only for the specific issue and understand the added risk of running code with elevated access. SSCAIT tutorial

The setup works locally but fails in a tournament stream

SSCAIT warns that standard-output logging in a release bot can lead to a crash or a timeout on its stream. A bot’s behavior in local testing therefore does not establish that its tournament package or logging configuration will work in the competition environment. SSCAIT tutorial

The bot targets a different game implementation

Check whether the bot was built for classic BWAPI or OpenBW before trying to launch it. SSCAIT describes them as distinct paths and says OpenBW-targeted output is not immediately compatible with classic 1.16.1 binaries. SSCAIT platform notes

The launcher sees the wrong game version

For BWAPI’s documented example, select StarCraft 1.16.1 rather than ICCup 1.16.1 in the launcher setup. If the bot documents a different supported version, follow that compatibility information rather than assuming the example applies. BWAPI quick start

Where to find bots and what a tournament package means

Look for a bot through its own project repository or a community competition’s submission and tutorial pages, then assess the maintainer and release files before downloading. A question such as “Where to find BWAPI bots?” is a useful search phrase, not evidence that a particular download has been checked or approved.

For SSCAIT submissions, the tutorial describes a ZIP containing a bot description and compiled JAR or DLL. Tournament packaging requirements are not necessarily the same as local installation instructions, and a submission format does not imply security review. SSCAIT tutorial
