For most new Linux setups, choose DOSBox Staging. It is a modern continuation of DOSBox with an official Linux release. Install it from the DOSBox Staging Linux releases page, from Flathub, or use your distribution’s dosbox package if you want the simplest repository install. Then mount a Linux folder containing your game as a DOS drive, change into its directory, and run the game’s actual DOS executable.
The key is that DOSBox does not automatically browse your Linux files: a command such as mount c /home/alex/DOSGames makes that folder appear inside the emulator as C:. These steps cover the install, first launch, configuration, and common fixes.
Before you begin
DOSBox emulates an x86 PC and DOS environment so you can run many DOS games and applications. It does not install a complete copy of MS-DOS, provide game files, or run ordinary modern Windows programs just because their names end in .exe. You need legally obtained software, and compatibility depends on the individual program. A Windows installer for a game is not necessarily a DOS program; it may need a different installation method unless it includes a DOSBox setup.
Create a dedicated folder in your home directory and put your game files there. For example:

mkdir -p "$HOME/DOSGames/DOOM"Use a simple path without spaces for your first setup. Avoid putting games in system directories such as /usr or /opt; your home folder is easier to manage and avoids unnecessary permission problems.
Choose a DOSBox version

The DOSBox Staging project’s Linux releases page lists version 0.82.2 as its current stable release as of September 23, 2026. Its official Linux archive is currently for x86_64 and requires an x86 processor with SSSE3. Check the project page for the current release and requirements before downloading; do not assume an archive built for x86_64 will work on another processor architecture. The project recommends its official build for Linux users. Staging is intended as a mostly drop-in DOSBox replacement, but not every game or old configuration behaves identically.
Install DOSBox Staging
Option 1: Use the official Linux archive
- Open the official Linux releases page and download the current stable Linux x86_64 archive.
- In a terminal, go to the directory where the download was saved, then extract it. The exact archive filename may change:
tar -xf dosbox-staging-*.tar.*- Enter the extracted directory and locate its executable. The directory and executable names can vary by release, so check what the archive actually contains:
cd dosbox-staging-*
find . -maxdepth 2 -type f -executable -print- Run the executable shown by
find. If it is nameddosbox-stagingand is in the current directory, for example:
./dosbox-stagingThis is a portable, per-user setup, not a system-wide installation. To keep the extracted folder in a personal applications directory, you can move it there from the directory containing it:
mkdir -p "$HOME/Applications"
mv dosbox-staging-* "$HOME/Applications/"The release page also describes an included install-icons.sh script for installing application icons. Use the script supplied with the archive if you want those icons, and follow the release’s instructions.
Option 2: Install the Flathub build
If Flatpak and the Flathub remote are set up on your system, install and run DOSBox Staging with:
flatpak install flathub io.github.dosbox-staging
flatpak run io.github.dosbox-stagingFlatpak apps are sandboxed. If Staging cannot see your game folder, grant it access to that folder and restart the emulator:
flatpak override --user
--filesystem="$HOME/DOSGames"

A distribution package is convenient and may integrate better with your desktop. Package names, availability, and which DOSBox variant is included depend on the distribution and release; a package named dosbox is not automatically DOSBox Staging.

On Debian, Ubuntu, and Linux Mint:
sudo apt update
sudo apt install dosboxOn Fedora-based distributions, if the package is available in your enabled repositories:
sudo dnf install dosboxOn Arch Linux:
sudo pacman -S dosboxArch’s DOSBox documentation also discusses Staging and DOSBox-X; their availability may depend on the repository or packaging route. Verify what you installed and which command is available:
dosbox --version
command -v dosbox
command -v dosbox-stagingIf you downloaded an archive or installed a Flatpak, the executable name or launch command will differ. Use the command associated with that installation.
Mount a Linux folder as a DOS drive
Assume your files are under /home/alex/DOSGames. Start DOSBox, then type these commands at its DOS prompt:
mount c /home/alex/DOSGames
c:
dirThe first line makes that Linux folder appear as the emulator’s virtual C: drive. It does not mount your computer’s real Windows-style drive or expose the whole Linux filesystem. The DOSBox manual documents this Linux-path-to-virtual-drive approach; see the DOSBox manual.
Inside DOSBox, use DOS commands and drive letters. For a game in ~/DOSGames/DOOM, for example:
mount c /home/alex/DOSGames
c:
cd DOOM
dirReplace /home/alex with your actual home path. You can find it in a Linux terminal with printf '%sn' "$HOME". Linux paths go in the mount command; after mounting, navigate with C:, cd, and dir.
Launch the game’s actual program
Use dir to inspect the files. The right starting file might be named DOOM.EXE, START.BAT, GAME.COM, or something else; do not assume every title has a game.exe. When you find the game’s launcher, run its DOS-visible name at the prompt, for example:

doom.exeYou can also start DOSBox from a Linux terminal and send commands at launch. If the game is in ~/DOSGames/DOOM and the executable really is doom.exe, use:
dosbox
-c "mount c $HOME/DOSGames/DOOM"

-c "doom.exe"These examples assume the command exists on your shell’s path and the executable is in the mounted directory. If you are using the official archive, run the executable from the extracted folder or use its full path. The distribution man page also documents passing a directory as a drive at startup (Ubuntu DOSBox man page), but explicit mount commands make the virtual-drive step clearer and are easier to troubleshoot.
Install a game from an installer
Some games are already installed and need only to be mounted and launched. Others have an installer. If the installer is an ordinary directory at ~/Downloads/DOOM_INSTALL, you can mount your games folder as C: and the installer folder as D::

dirRun the installer you actually find there, such as install.exe, setup.exe, or an .bat file. Follow its prompts and choose a destination on C:, if the installer allows it. Then return to the installed game’s directory on C: and use dir to find its launcher.
A CD image is not an ordinary folder. A game may require an ISO or floppy image to be mounted with the emulator’s image-mounting command, commonly imgmount; the appropriate syntax depends on the image type and DOSBox variant. Some CD-based games also rely on CD audio or copy-protection behavior that varies between versions. Consult the documentation for your emulator and image format rather than treating every image as a directory mount.
Useful commands and controls
At the DOSBox prompt, these commands help you inspect and navigate:
help
mount
dir
cd foldername
c:
mem
ver
exitCommon original DOSBox shortcuts include Alt+Enter for fullscreen, Ctrl+F11 to lower emulated CPU cycles, and Ctrl+F12 to raise them. Shortcut behavior can differ in Staging or DOSBox-X; check the documentation for the version you installed. To avoid typing a mount command every time, add commands to the emulator’s configuration file. A global auto-mount is convenient when you usually work with the same library; for games needing different settings, keep configurations separate per game.

DOSBox Staging configuration
For the native Linux build, Staging’s standard configuration path is ~/.config/dosbox/dosbox-staging.conf. Confirm the active path instead of assuming it, especially if you installed through Flatpak:
dosbox-staging --printconfThe Staging getting-started guide documents this option and the native configuration location. In the active file, add or update the [autoexec] section:

c:To start one specific game automatically, mount its directory and run its launcher instead:

doom.exeUse your actual home path and executable name. A per-game configuration avoids forcing one title’s mount, launch command, or settings on every other game.
Original DOSBox and Flatpak paths
The original DOSBox creates configuration files under ~/.dosbox/ on first run, but the filename varies by version. Find the file rather than assuming a particular name:
find "$HOME/.dosbox" -maxdepth 1 -type f -printPossible legacy filenames include dosbox.conf and dosbox-0.74.conf. Flatpak stores application data separately, so its configuration may be under an application-specific directory such as ~/.var/app/io.github.dosbox-staging/config/dosbox/; this is not a universal path. Use the installed variant’s configuration-printing option where available and ensure you edit the active file.
Fix common problems
DOSBox says it cannot find the game
At the prompt, check what is mounted and what the emulator can see:
mount
c:
dir
cd DOOM
dirCommon causes are mounting the wrong Linux directory, having the game one directory deeper than expected, typing the wrong executable name, or needing a CD or disk image. Linux permissions can also block access. If you installed through Flatpak, check its filesystem permission as well.

Flatpak cannot see the games folder
Grant the application access to just that folder, then close and relaunch the emulator. For DOSBox Staging:
flatpak override --user
--filesystem="$HOME/DOSGames"
io.github.dosbox-stagingFor DOSBox-X:
flatpak override --user
--filesystem="$HOME/DOSGames"
com.dosbox_x.DOSBox-XUse the application ID for the Flatpak you installed. DOSBox-X’s official installation instructions also warn that Flatpak sandboxing can restrict access to host files.
The game runs too fast
Test with the emulator’s defaults first. If a game still runs too quickly, lower its emulated CPU cycles. In original DOSBox, try typing:

The value is an example, not a universal setting: suitable cycle counts vary by game and emulator. Original DOSBox configuration uses settings such as cycles=3000, but do not copy legacy configuration lines into Staging without checking its documentation. The DOSBox configuration guide explains cycle modes and cautions that excessive cycles can cause instability, stuttering, or sound problems.
The game runs too slowly
If the shortcut is supported, Ctrl+F12 raises cycles. You can also test with expensive scaling effects reduced, try a different scaler, or temporarily test with sound disabled. Check whether the game uses a high-resolution or protected mode. More cycles are not always better: an excessive setting can make the game unstable or disrupt audio.
There is no sound
If the game has a setup utility, run it (often setup.exe) and choose an available sound device. Sound Blaster-compatible options are common, but the correct device, IRQ, DMA, and address depend on the title and emulator configuration. To isolate the problem, test with sound disabled before assuming Linux audio itself is broken. The original DOSBox manual recommends sound-disabled testing as a troubleshooting step.
Configuration changes have no effect
You may have edited a different variant’s file, a native configuration instead of Flatpak’s, or a global file that is overridden by a per-game configuration. The filename may also be wrong, or the emulator may need a restart. For Staging, check the active file with dosbox-staging --printconf; for another variant, use its own supported configuration option or documentation.

Try the original dosbox package if a bundled launcher expects that command, an older tutorial matches it, or a particular title works better there. The original DOSBox is still packaged by distributions, but its manual covers version 0.74-3 and ArchWiki notes it has not had a new release since 2019. That history is why Staging is a better starting point for many new installations, not a guarantee that every game will work better in it.
Choose DOSBox-X when a program needs more detailed hardware, video, sound, memory, or peripheral controls. Its official Flatpak installation command is:
flatpak install flathub com.dosbox_x.DOSBox-X
flatpak run com.dosbox_x.DOSBox-XGrant access to your games directory with the narrower filesystem override shown above if needed. DOSBox-X’s many options are useful for advanced compatibility work, but can be unnecessary for a straightforward game setup. If you only have a few titles, direct DOSBox commands are enough; a frontend becomes useful when you want per-game settings, shortcuts, artwork, and library management.
