On an Ubuntu VPS, install FFmpeg from Ubuntu’s repositories with sudo apt update and sudo apt install ffmpeg, then verify it with ffmpeg -version. To stream to YouTube Live, use the ingestion address and stream key for your active stream; for a secure RTMPS connection, use the correct YouTube endpoint over TLS on port 443.
Before you install FFmpeg
Connect to your Contabo VPS over SSH using an account that can run commands with sudo. Confirm which Ubuntu release is installed before troubleshooting package availability or relying on a particular package version:
lsb_release -a
cat /etc/os-releaseUbuntu’s package index lists FFmpeg in the Universe component for Ubuntu 22.04 LTS and 24.04 LTS. The retrieved package data lists 7:4.4.2-0ubuntu0.22.04.1 for 22.04 and 7:6.1.1-3ubuntu5 for 24.04; these are examples, not guaranteed versions for every machine. The version available to you can vary with release, architecture, and repository updates.
Install FFmpeg from Ubuntu repositories

Refresh apt’s package metadata:
sudo apt update -
Install FFmpeg:
sudo apt install ffmpeg -
Confirm the executable is available and inspect its build information:

ffmpeg -version
If apt reports that it cannot find the package, check the installed Ubuntu release and whether the usual repositories, including Universe, are enabled. Start with those checks rather than adding an arbitrary PPA. These are Ubuntu installation instructions; they do not imply that a particular Contabo image or VPS configuration was tested.
Get the correct YouTube Live ingest details
YouTube’s ingestion information is specific to the stream. Copy the current ingestion address and stream name or key from YouTube Studio or the relevant YouTube API response. Depending on the encoder interface, you may enter the server URL and stream name separately, or combine them as STREAM_URL/STREAM_NAME. Do not use a key copied from a generic example: treat your stream key as a credential and keep it out of public scripts, screenshots, and logs.

Publish a file to YouTube over RTMPS
For a conventional H.264 stream with low latency, RTMPS is a practical RTMP-style option. YouTube’s RTMPS requirements call for the rtmps scheme, a valid YouTube ingestion endpoint and path, TLS on port 443, and the correct server hostname sent through TLS SNI.
This generic command is a starting template, not a tested Contabo command. Replace every capitalized placeholder with values for your input file and active YouTube stream, and confirm that your FFmpeg build supports the encoder and protocol you need:

A stream’s ingest endpoint and key must match the current YouTube stream. Keep real credentials private even when diagnosing a failed connection.
Choose a protocol that matches the workflow

Size the VPS for the actual encode job
FFmpeg’s workload depends on what you ask it to encode and stream. The available information does not establish current Contabo plan specifications, CPU performance, outbound bandwidth, prices, or supported stream limits, so it cannot substantiate a specific resolution, bitrate, or continuous-streaming guarantee for a named plan. Check Contabo’s current plan details and validate the intended workload on the VPS rather than assuming a tier will sustain it.

Troubleshoot installation and ingest problems
Unable to locate package ffmpeg: confirm the Ubuntu release and check that the usual repositories, including Universe, are enabled; then refresh package metadata withsudo apt update.ffmpeg: command not foundafter installation: check whether the package installation completed successfully, then runffmpeg -versionagain from a new shell if needed.- The stream does not connect or times out: confirm the destination uses
rtmps, the YouTube-provided endpoint and stream-specific path, port 443, and TLS with the correct hostname supplied through SNI. Sending cleartext RTMP to an RTMPS endpoint can cause timeouts. - YouTube does not receive the intended stream: re-check that the active stream’s ingestion address and stream key are being used, and that the encoder is passing them in the format it expects.
- The command rejects an encoder or protocol: inspect
ffmpeg -versionand verify that the installed build includes the required encoder and protocol support. - The VPS cannot sustain the chosen workload: review the encode settings and compare the real job with the provider’s current CPU and bandwidth specifications. No particular Contabo plan’s capacity is established here.
