Yes—on Windows, you can install Fortnite to a drive other than C: using the Epic Games Launcher. In Fortnite’s install dialog, choose Browse, select or create a folder on the drive you want, then start the installation. This changes Fortnite’s location, not the launcher’s.
Install Fortnite on another drive
- Open the Epic Games Launcher and sign in.
- Open Library and find Fortnite. If it is not in your library, select Get first.
- Click Install.
- In the installation dialog, select Browse beside the install location.
- Choose or create a folder on the target drive, such as
D:Epic GamesFortniteorE:GamesFortnite. - Confirm the location and select Install. Leave the launcher open while it downloads and verifies the game.
The launcher may show C:Program FilesEpic Games as a default example; that is not a requirement. Epic’s Fortnite installation instructions allow you to select another installation directory.
Set another drive as the default for future Epic games
To change the default location for future installations, open the launcher’s Download Manager in the lower-left area, then go to Download Settings → General → Change beside Default Install Directory. Choose a folder on the other drive. This setting affects future installs; it does not by itself move a copy of Fortnite that is already installed. See Epic’s default installation path instructions.

Simply dragging the game folder to another drive may leave the launcher unable to locate it. Epic’s general game-relocation method uses a backup, a brief new installation, and file verification. It can avoid most of a full redownload if the existing files are intact, but the launcher may still download missing or updated files.

- Close Fortnite and the Epic Games Launcher.
- Make a complete backup copy of the existing Fortnite installation folder. Keep it until the new installation works.
- Reopen the launcher, go to Library, select the three-dot menu beside Fortnite, and choose Uninstall.
- Start installing Fortnite again and use Browse to choose the new folder on the destination drive.
- Let the download reach about 2–3%, then cancel it.
- Copy the backed-up Fortnite folder into the exact directory selected in the new installation attempt. If Windows asks whether to replace duplicate files, choose to replace them.
- Resume the installation in the launcher and let it verify the files.
Pay attention to folder nesting. If the launcher expects D:Epic GamesFortnite, copying the old folder so the result is D:Epic GamesFortniteFortniteGame may put the files one level too deep. If the launcher starts downloading the whole game again, stop and check that the copied folder contents are in the selected install directory. Epic documents this as a general method for moving an installed game; it is not a Fortnite-specific guarantee.
Does the launcher need to be on the same drive?
Usually, no. The Epic Games Launcher and Fortnite have separate installation locations: you can select Fortnite’s folder in its install dialog and set a default game directory independently. Epic does, however, recommend trying Fortnite on the same drive as the launcher for certain ESP errors. Treat that as an error-specific troubleshooting step, not a general requirement.

Check the destination drive and available space
Use a drive that Windows can access and write to, with enough room for the game and future updates. Fortnite’s size changes, so there is no permanent install-size figure to rely on. Epic mentions at least 10 GB free in its ESP-error troubleshooting guidance; that is a troubleshooting recommendation, not a statement that the complete game fits in 10 GB. Leave additional headroom for updates and temporary download files.

- Check that it appears in File Explorer and has a drive letter.
- Try creating a folder on it manually, such as
D:Epic Games. If Windows will not let you, resolve the drive or folder permissions first. - Check free space and confirm the drive is connected, unlocked if encrypted, and not read-only.
- Reconnect or mount the drive, then restart the launcher.
- If access is blocked, check Windows permissions and security software, including Controlled folder access.
If you see Invalid Drive, the drive letter may have changed or the installer may point to a drive that is no longer available. Check the assigned letter in Windows Disk Management and Epic’s Invalid Drive troubleshooting.
If Fortnite installs but will not launch
- Confirm the destination drive is connected and still has the same letter.
- In the launcher’s Library, open Fortnite’s three-dot menu and select Manage → Verify.
- Wait for validation to finish, then restart the launcher and try Fortnite again.
Verification checks local game files and repairs files that differ; Epic says it does not affect saved data. See its installation-error and verification guidance. For persistent ESP errors, Epic also lists checking free space, clearing the launcher cache, running the launcher as administrator, checking firewall or security software, and testing Fortnite on the launcher’s drive. These are targeted troubleshooting options, not steps every player needs to take.

Which drive should you use?
A stable internal drive is the safer choice for most players. An external drive may work, but a disconnection, changed drive letter, sleep issue, or cable problem can make the launcher lose the installation path. An SSD may reduce some loading waits compared with a slower hard drive, but actual results depend on the system; choosing a healthy, consistently available drive with enough free space matters most.
