You can install Lutris on a Chromebook that supports ChromeOS’s Linux development environment, but Lutris runs inside that Debian-based Linux container—not as a native ChromeOS app. The simplest general-purpose installation route is Flatpak. Installing Lutris does not guarantee that a particular Windows game will run: games need compatible runners and graphics support, and results vary by game and Chromebook.
Before you begin
Check that Linux apps are available on your Chromebook. Open Settings → About ChromeOS → Developers and look for Linux development environment. If the option is missing or blocked, the normal installation method below is not available on that device. Support varies by model and ChromeOS version, and a school- or work-managed Chromebook may have Linux disabled by an administrator. - Check storage: Leave room not only for Lutris, but also for runners, installers, and game files. Large games can exceed the Linux environment’s allocated storage.
- Check architecture: In Terminal, run
dpkg --print-architecture. Intel/AMD x86-64 Chromebooks are generally more flexible for Windows games than ARM models, but neither architecture guarantees compatibility. - Back up important Linux files: Before changing or removing the Linux environment, save files you cannot afford to lose.
- Set expectations: Lutris is a Linux game-management client. It can manage native Linux games and use runners such as Wine, DOSBox, or emulators, but it does not make every Windows game compatible. Lutris’s FAQ describes its runners and game sources.
You do not need ChromeOS Developer Mode for the normal Linux development environment setup. Follow ChromeOS’s built-in Linux setup rather than replacing or bypassing the operating system.

Step 1: Turn on Linux on your Chromebook
- Open Settings.
- Select About ChromeOS, then Developers.
- Choose Linux development environment or Turn on. The wording can differ slightly between ChromeOS releases.
- Follow the setup wizard and choose an amount of storage that accounts for the games you intend to install.
- When setup finishes, open the new Terminal app.
ChromeOS creates the Linux environment and lets its graphical Linux applications appear alongside ChromeOS apps. Google’s Linux setup guide covers enabling and restarting the environment.

Step 2: Update the Linux container
Run these commands in the Linux Terminal, not in Chrome’s address bar:
sudo apt update
sudo apt upgrade -yThe first command refreshes the package lists; the second installs available updates. If you need to confirm the container’s distribution and architecture while troubleshooting, run:
cat /etc/os-release
dpkg --print-architectureChromeOS Linux is Debian-based, but the Debian release and processor architecture can differ between devices.

Step 3: Install Lutris with Flatpak
Flatpak through Flathub is a practical primary route when Lutris’s availability or version in the Debian repositories is uncertain. Run these commands in Terminal:
sudo apt update
sudo apt install flatpak -y
sudo flatpak remote-add --if-not-exists flathub
https://dl.flathub.org/repo/flathub.flatpakrepo
flatpak install flathub net.lutris.LutrisHere is what the commands do:
sudo apt updaterefreshes Debian’s package lists.sudo apt install flatpak -yinstalls Flatpak, the application manager.flatpak remote-addadds Flathub as a software source if it is not already configured.flatpak installinstalls Lutris. Its Flatpak application ID isnet.lutris.Lutris.

Step 4: Open Lutris
Launch Lutris from Terminal with:
flatpak run net.lutris.LutrisIt may also appear in the ChromeOS Launcher under Linux apps. If it does not show up there, use the command above to check whether it opens. You can also restart the Linux environment from ChromeOS settings; a full Chromebook restart is not always necessary.

lutrisThis route is conditional: package availability and Lutris version depend on the Debian release and repositories configured in the container. If Terminal says Unable to locate package lutris, use the Flatpak procedure instead of adding an unverified PPA or running a script from an unofficial source. Lutris discusses distribution packages in its installation documentation.
What to do after Lutris opens
Installing the client is only the first of three separate tasks: installing Lutris, selecting a runner, and installing and configuring a game. Lutris does not automatically install your game stores, games, or game files.

Choose a runner
For a Windows game, Lutris commonly uses a Wine-based runner. In Lutris, open the relevant runner category, such as Wine, and use its runner-management control to install an available build. Select a suitable runner when you install or configure the game. A separate Wine prefix for each game can help keep their configurations isolated.
Lutris’s Flatpak can launch without a separately installed system Wine package; that does not mean Windows games run without Wine or another compatible runner. A specific game still depends on its runner, graphics capabilities, and its own compatibility requirements. Lutris explains its graphics and system requirements and its runner guidance.

Make the installer accessible to Linux
ChromeOS’s Downloads folder and the Linux container’s home directory are not automatically the same place. If Lutris cannot find an installer, use the Files app to move it into Linux files, or share the folder with Linux using the folder’s sharing option. You can also download files from within Linux. Install the game
Use a Lutris installer or add a game you own through a supported store or local installer. Native Linux games avoid the Windows compatibility layer; Windows games typically need a suitable Wine-based runner. The correct setup depends on the game, its store, and any DRM or anti-cheat requirements. Lutris helps manage installation and configuration; it does not provide paid games for free.

No. Being able to install a Linux application is different from having the graphics support, architecture, and performance needed by a particular game. ChromeOS’s Linux environment is virtualized and does not expose precisely the same capabilities as Linux installed directly on a PC.
- Graphics: Some games need Vulkan or 32-bit OpenGL/Vulkan libraries. Support can be unavailable or incomplete in a Chromebook’s Linux environment.
- Processor architecture: ARM devices can face extra barriers with x86 Windows games and translation layers.
- Hardware limits: A low-powered CPU, limited RAM, or integrated graphics can make a game slow even if it installs.
- Game restrictions: Anti-cheat or DRM may prevent a game from launching under Wine.
- Storage: The Linux environment needs enough space for game files as well as the client and runners.
For a first test, try a lightweight native Linux game or an older, less demanding title rather than beginning with a modern graphics-heavy Windows game. Lutris’s system-preparation notes outline graphics and library requirements; actual results remain game- and device-specific.

Uninstall Lutris
For the Flatpak version, run:
flatpak uninstall net.lutris.LutrisTo remove unused Flatpak dependencies, run flatpak uninstall --unused. For the Debian package version, use:
sudo apt remove lutrisRemoving Lutris is not the same as removing the Linux development environment. Deleting that environment from ChromeOS settings removes its container and files, so copy out anything you want to keep first.
When another way to play makes more sense
If your Chromebook cannot run a game well locally, consider its Android version in Google Play, a cloud-gaming service, or a device with conventional PC gaming support. Cloud gaming can avoid local hardware limits, but it requires a reliable, low-latency internet connection and may require a subscription or ownership of games on a supported store. For broad local Lutris compatibility, a conventional Linux PC is generally a more suitable target than assuming a Chromebook will handle demanding Windows games.
