You can install OBS Studio on Ubuntu from the OBS Project PPA, connect it to YouTube with a stream key, and broadcast from your computer. But a local OBS setup is only as continuous as the computer, power, and internet connection running it. YouTube also warns that a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured as a replay, so plan archive recording separately.
Before you install: check Ubuntu, OBS requirements, and YouTube eligibility
Ubuntu and hardware
OBS Project’s Linux installation page, dated August 26, 2021, gives PPA instructions for Ubuntu 18.04 or newer. Because that guidance is dated, check the current instructions for your exact Ubuntu release before installing. OBS lists an OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU and X Window System or Wayland among its basic Linux requirements; meeting them does not guarantee that a particular scene and encoder will stream smoothly. Resolution, frame rate, encoder choice, and scene complexity all affect performance. See the OBS Linux installation page and OBS system requirements.
YouTube channel eligibility
Your channel must be verified and must not have live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Initial live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before you plan to go live. You will need the stream URL and stream key from YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Treat the key like a password: anyone with it may be able to broadcast to your channel. See YouTube’s encoder guide.
Install OBS Studio on Ubuntu
The OBS Project page’s Ubuntu instructions list these commands for Ubuntu 18.04 or newer. Check the page against your Ubuntu release before running them; instructions published in 2021 may not be the best route for every later release.

Open a terminal and add the OBS Studio PPA:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:obsproject/obs-studio -
Install OBS Studio:
sudo apt install obs-studio -
Launch OBS Studio from your applications menu. Run the Auto-Configuration Wizard as a starting point, then test the actual scene and stream. The wizard cannot establish that an unattended 24/7 broadcast will remain reliable.
Connect OBS to YouTube

In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select a live stream. Confirm that the channel is eligible and that live streaming has been activated.

Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the broadcast. Keep the key private; if it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio.

In OBS, open Settings and choose Stream. Choose YouTube as the service if that option is available, then enter the stream key. If configuring a custom server, use the stream URL supplied by YouTube as the server address. Labels can vary by OBS version.

Set up the scene and sources you intend to keep live. For a prerecorded-video stream, confirm the media source or playlist behaves as intended when it reaches the end; preview several full transitions before relying on it unattended.

Start streaming in OBS, then check the preview and stream-health information in YouTube’s Live Control Room before making the broadcast public or leaving it unattended.

YouTube’s instructions for connecting an encoder are in its encoder guide; its live-streaming tips also recommend testing the setup in advance.
Set encoder and bitrate settings for YouTube
For standard SDR RTMP or RTMPS streaming, use YouTube’s current encoder guidance as the final reference; its recommended bitrate depends on resolution and frame rate, so there is no one bitrate that fits every stream. The guidance specifies H.264 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), up to 60 fps, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. Choose a resolution and frame rate your computer can sustain. A higher setting increases encoding and upload demands. Test with the same scenes and movement you expect to broadcast.

Use YouTube’s bitrate range for that resolution and frame rate. Configure the video encoder for CBR and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds.

Check audio as well as video. Use AAC or MP3 as specified in YouTube’s guidance and verify the levels and sound in the Live Control Room.

Leave upload headroom. YouTube recommends 20% more upload bandwidth than the total stream bitrate. That is general guidance, not a guarantee about any Indian ISP, plan, or location.

Test the local setup before leaving it on
A successful short test does not prove that OBS will recover from a power loss, application crash, or network outage. Before committing to a continuous broadcast, test the complete chain at the location and time you will use it.

Run an upload speed test and make sure other devices or people sharing the connection will not consume the headroom the stream needs.

Preview with representative motion and audio, and check YouTube’s stream-health indicators for warnings or dropped frames.

Check whether the Ubuntu computer stays powered on, remains connected, and can restart OBS and the broadcast after a restart or interruption. Do not assume unattended recovery is automatic.

Confirm the video source or playlist continues as intended, and decide how you will notice a stopped broadcast when nobody is watching the computer.

If keeping a replay matters, arrange a local recording and verify that the recording file is growing and has enough storage.

YouTube warns that connectivity disruptions can break a stream and recommends monitoring stream health. Its general advice is to retain 20% upload bandwidth headroom; test the actual connection rather than assuming a particular speed tier is sufficient. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
Will YouTube save a 24-hour stream?
Not reliably as one complete replay. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. A continuous 24/7 broadcast should not be treated as a guaranteed complete archive. If the recording matters, make a local recording or plan deliberate sessions and verify the resulting archives. YouTube recommends a local archive backup. See YouTube’s archive guidance.

Troubleshoot common OBS-to-YouTube problems

You cannot start a live stream: check channel verification, live-stream restrictions, and whether initial activation is complete. Activation can take up to 24 hours.

YouTube reports a connection or stream-key problem: check that OBS has the current stream URL and key for the selected broadcast. If the key may have been exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update OBS.

The stream buffers or drops frames: check YouTube’s stream-health warnings, the actual upload connection, competing network use, and bitrate. Lower resolution, frame rate, or bitrate within YouTube’s guidance if the connection or computer cannot sustain the settings.

Video stutters or encoding overload appears: simplify scenes and sources or use a lower resolution or frame rate, then test again. Basic OBS system requirements do not guarantee adequate performance for every workload.

The broadcast stops while unattended: inspect power, Ubuntu session and restart behavior, OBS status, and network continuity. The local method depends on those components; a test is necessary because no automatic recovery from every failure is established here.

The replay is missing or incomplete: a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. Use local recording if preservation matters, and verify that it is being written.
