You can provision a Hetzner Cloud virtual machine and install OBS Studio on its Linux image, but the available official guidance does not establish a complete headless setup or show that a particular Hetzner server can sustain a 24/7 stream. OBS requires a supported graphics and display environment; a standard headless VM does not automatically provide one. Treat this as a cautious setup path, validate the display and encoding capabilities of your chosen instance, and test before relying on it.
What you need to verify before creating the server
The critical question is not simply whether Linux can install OBS. OBS’s Linux requirements list an OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU and an X window system or Wayland, and OBS cautions that meeting its stated requirements does not guarantee a machine can stream or record. A normal headless virtual machine should not be assumed to meet those requirements. The available documentation does not establish the Hetzner-specific configuration needed to provide them.
- Graphics and display: establish how the specific VM will provide OBS with the required OpenGL and display environment before committing to it.
- Encoding: verify what encoding options the instance actually exposes. OBS says hardware encoding can reduce CPU workload, but the available information does not show that a Hetzner Cloud instance exposes a suitable hardware encoder. OBS also cautions that earlier hardware encoder generations may produce lower image quality at the same bitrate.
- Network and cost: Hetzner describes Cloud servers as virtual machines and distinguishes server costs from Primary IP costs. A Primary IP is needed for an internet-connected public network interface. Check current specifications, regional availability, IP charges and sustained outbound traffic costs directly before choosing a server; no current plan price or workload sizing is established here.
OBS’s Linux installation page is dated 2021-08-26, its system requirements and quick-start material are dated 2021-08-25, its hardware-encoding page is dated 2022-01-11, Hetzner’s Cloud overview was last changed 2022-06-28, and its server-creation page was last changed 2021-12-13. Check the current instructions and product details before following them; do not treat those dated pages as proof of a present-day working configuration.
Create the Hetzner Cloud server
Hetzner’s server-creation flow includes choices for server type, location, image, networking, SSH key, firewall and backups. These are provisioning choices, not an OBS performance recommendation.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Choose a server type and location. Compare the currently offered CPU resources and whether the instance has the graphics and encoding path your intended OBS setup requires. Hetzner distinguishes shared-resource servers from dedicated-resource servers; dedicated CPU resources alone do not establish that a server is suitable for continuous streaming.
- Select a Linux image. Choose Ubuntu or another Linux family supported by the current OBS instructions for that distribution. The Hetzner overview lists Ubuntu and several other Linux families, but the appropriate image depends on the installation route you verify.
- Decide whether the server needs a public network interface. If it needs public internet access, plan for a Primary IP and include its separate cost in your estimate.
- Select your SSH key before creating the server. Hetzner says a key cannot be added through its Console after creation. Confirm you have access to the private key that matches the public key you select.
- Configure the firewall and backups. Allow only the access required for administration and your chosen workflow. The available Hetzner guidance identifies the firewall option but does not prescribe OBS-specific firewall rules.
- Review the selections and create the server. Keep a record of the chosen image, location, server type, networking and access configuration so you can diagnose later problems.
Install OBS using the current instructions for your Linux image
Use OBS’s official Linux installation guidance for the distribution you chose, checking the live instructions rather than copying an old command from a third-party guide. The OBS page dated 2021-08-26 recommends Flathub for non-Ubuntu distributions and describes an Ubuntu route using the OBS Studio PPA and apt. Because the page is dated, verify that the repository and steps remain current for your image before running them. The available material does not provide a verified, current command sequence to reproduce here.
- Ubuntu: verify the present OBS Studio PPA and apt instructions against the current OBS installation page and your Ubuntu release.
- Other distributions: check whether the current OBS guidance recommends Flathub or provides distribution-specific instructions. Confirm that the chosen packaging route works with the display environment you intend to use.
Installing the package is not the same as making OBS usable on a headless VM. Before configuring a broadcast, confirm that OBS can start with the required display system and OpenGL support on the actual instance. The available official material does not give a Hetzner-specific headless setup, so do not assume a successful package installation proves this step.

Configure OBS and YouTube only after the VM passes a local check
Open OBS in the display environment you have configured and confirm that it detects the intended video source and an available encoder. OBS recommends its Auto-Configuration Wizard as a starting point, but its recommendation does not prove that the wizard will choose suitable settings for a particular VM or continuous workload.
- Run the Auto-Configuration Wizard. Use its result as an initial configuration, not as evidence of long-term capacity.
- Confirm your video source and encoder. Check that the source plays correctly and that the selected encoder is available on this VM. Do not assume hardware encoding is exposed by the virtual server.
- Connect OBS to the intended YouTube live stream. Use the current YouTube and OBS instructions for your channel and workflow. The available YouTube material concerns HDR and says to choose YouTube RTMPS in OBS in that context; it does not substantiate ordinary H.264 bitrate, resolution, frame-rate or keyframe recommendations.
- Protect your stream key. Treat it like a credential: keep it out of screenshots, public logs and shared configuration, and use YouTube’s current controls if it is exposed.
- Test the output for a few minutes before relying on it. OBS recommends a short output test. Check YouTube’s live preview and OBS for errors, dropped frames or an unexpectedly heavy resource load. A short test is a preflight check, not a 24/7 reliability test.
Do not choose bitrate, resolution, frame rate or keyframe settings from guesswork. Consult current official YouTube Live encoder guidance for ordinary streams and match the settings to the source, encoder and connection you have actually validated. The available YouTube reference is about HDR and does not support standard-stream numeric settings.

What is still missing for a dependable 24/7 setup
A server that can launch OBS is not, by itself, a verified 24/7 streaming system. The available documentation supports provisioning a VM, installing OBS according to distribution guidance, checking OBS’s Linux requirements and performing a short test. It does not establish a working headless graphics configuration for Hetzner, a suitable server size, a process supervision design, restart behavior, monitoring, or recovery procedures for a real deployment. Do not promise uninterrupted service or leave a broadcast unattended until those parts have been independently configured and tested on the actual instance.
Plan operational checks around the failure cases that matter: whether the OBS process exits, whether the VM restarts, whether the display session survives, whether the video source remains available, and what happens when YouTube disconnects the stream. Confirm the behavior rather than assuming that server creation, OBS’s wizard or a successful short test covers it.

Copyright and channel-policy checks
Before looping or broadcasting any video, make sure you have the rights and permissions needed to use its video and audio on YouTube. A stream being technically live does not establish that its content is authorized or complies with YouTube’s current rules. Review YouTube’s current copyright and monetization policies, including its rules for reused content, for the specific material and channel. No policy detail or guarantee of monetization is established by the technical setup guidance here.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded videos looping on a YouTube channel, rather than to broadcast a live camera or interactively operate OBS, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud; it does not broadcast from a camera.

Quick Recap
Troubleshooting checks
- OBS installs but will not open: revisit the Linux OpenGL and display-system requirements. Verify how your VM supplies them; package installation alone does not satisfy the graphics requirement.
- OBS opens but has no usable encoder: inspect the encoders actually available on the instance and check the current OBS guidance. Do not assume a virtual machine exposes hardware encoding.
- YouTube does not receive the stream: recheck the current YouTube connection workflow, selected service and stream key. If the key may have been exposed, replace it using YouTube’s current controls.
- The stream works briefly but fails later: a short preflight does not validate continuous operation. Determine whether the process, display session, source, server or YouTube connection failed, then verify restart and recovery behavior on that setup.
- The VM is reachable only through a private network: check the networking choice and whether a Primary IP is required for the public connection your workflow needs.
