To install OptiFine 1.15.2, launch vanilla Minecraft: Java Edition 1.15.2 once, download OptiFine HD U G6 from the official OptiFine website, open its .jar installer with Java, click Install, and select the new OptiFine profile in the official Minecraft Launcher.
This guide is for Minecraft: Java Edition on Windows, macOS, and Linux. OptiFine does not install on Minecraft Bedrock Edition for Windows, consoles, or mobile devices.
Before you start
- Minecraft: Java Edition: OptiFine is a Java Edition modification. It is not compatible with Bedrock Edition.
- The official Minecraft Launcher: Download or manage the Java Edition installation through Minecraft’s official download page.
- Minecraft 1.15.2: The game version, OptiFine build, Forge version, mods, and shaders must match.
- Java: The Launcher may bundle or manage Java for running Minecraft, but the OptiFine installer still needs a Java-capable way to open its
.jarfile. - A backup: Copy important worlds before changing a modded installation. Installing OptiFine normally should not overwrite worlds, but backups make recovery safer.
OptiFine adds expanded video settings, performance controls, zoom, connected textures, and shader support. It may improve frame rate on some systems, but performance is not guaranteed: hardware, drivers, resource packs, shaders, settings, and other mods all affect the result. OptiFine’s official FAQ also recommends using the tooltips in Video Settings to understand the performance impact of individual options.

Which OptiFine 1.15.2 file should you download?
On the official OptiFine downloads page, find the section labeled Minecraft 1.15.2 and download:

- Forge compatibility shown on the listing: 31.2.45
That is the final 1.15.2 build currently listed for that Minecraft version. It is not the latest OptiFine release overall. Do not use an OptiFine file for 1.16, 1.20, or another Minecraft version with 1.15.2.
Download safely
The expected installer is a Java archive with a name similar to:
OptiFine_1.15.2_HD_U_G6.jarThe official domain is optifine.net. Download only from the official site. Avoid similarly named .exe files, browser extensions, “cracked” launchers, unofficial mod aggregators, and advertisements that lead to unrelated software. Never disable antivirus protection just to force a suspicious installer to run, and never rename an executable to make it look like a .jar.

1. Launch vanilla Minecraft 1.15.2 once
- Open the official Minecraft Launcher.
- Open the Java Edition installation selector.
- Create or select an installation using
release 1.15.2. - Launch the game and wait until the title screen appears.
- Close Minecraft.
This creates the local 1.15.2 files and gives the OptiFine installer a target installation. If you use a custom game directory, note which directory the Launcher uses.
2. Open the OptiFine installer
Double-click the downloaded .jar file. If it opens correctly, the installer should display a Minecraft directory and an Install button.
On Windows, choose Java or Java Platform Binary if the operating system asks which application should open the file. On macOS or Linux, use the system’s “Open with” option and select Java.
3. Check the Minecraft directory
The installer should identify your Minecraft game directory. Common default locations are:

These locations can differ when the Launcher uses a custom game directory. Verify the directory shown by the installer instead of changing it blindly. It must be the same directory used by the Launcher for your 1.15.2 installation.
4. Click Install
Click Install. Use Install, not Extract, for the normal official Launcher setup. The installer should report that the OptiFine profile was created or installed successfully.
5. Select the OptiFine profile
- Close and reopen the Minecraft Launcher if it was already open.
- Open the Java Edition installation selector.
- Select the newly created OptiFine installation.
- Launch the game.
The profile may be named for OptiFine rather than simply “1.15.2.” Confirm that it is the OptiFine installation for Minecraft 1.15.2.
Confirm that OptiFine installed correctly
After the game reaches the title screen:
- Select Options.
- Select Video Settings.
- Look for OptiFine-specific controls and expanded graphics settings.
Those additional video options are the practical confirmation that OptiFine is running. You can also press F3 to open Minecraft’s debug screen and inspect the version information.

No. Forge is optional. Use standalone OptiFine if you only want additional graphics settings, zoom, performance controls, or shaders.
Use Forge plus OptiFine only when you also need Forge mods. The OptiFine download listing shows Forge 31.2.45 beside OptiFine HD U G6 as its relevant compatibility signal. Keep every component on Minecraft 1.15.2:

Mods compatible with 1.15.2This listing does not guarantee compatibility with every Forge mod. OptiFine’s FAQ warns that mod compatibility is not guaranteed and recommends checking conflicts and logs. Back up the instance first, and add OptiFine after other mods when possible so another mod does not overwrite its classes.
Using OptiFine with a custom launcher
Prism Launcher, MultiMC, CurseForge, and other third-party launchers can keep each instance in a separate game directory. In that case, the default .minecraft folder may not be the correct destination.

The .jar file will not open
- Confirm that the filename really ends in
.jar, not.jar.exeor another extension. - Right-click the file and choose Open with Java.
- If Java is not listed, install an appropriate Java runtime for your operating system.
- Restart the computer and try again.
- On Windows, if Java is installed but
.jarfiles still have a broken association, the optional third-party Jarfix utility may repair that association.
Jarfix is not an OptiFine requirement. Do not use it to open a file that is actually an executable or came from an untrusted download.
The installer says “Minecraft not found”
Check all of the following:
- Vanilla Minecraft 1.15.2 has been launched at least once.
- The downloaded OptiFine file is specifically for 1.15.2.
- The installer points to the correct Minecraft directory.
- The Launcher is not using a custom game directory.
- Your account has permission to read and write to that directory.
Select the correct directory in the installer if necessary. Do not delete the entire .minecraft folder as a first response; doing so can remove worlds, resource packs, screenshots, and other profiles.
No OptiFine profile appears in the Launcher
- Close and reopen the Launcher.
- Confirm that the Launcher and installer use the same game directory.
- Make sure the installation list is showing historical releases.
- Launch vanilla 1.15.2 again, close it, and rerun the installer.
- Create a new Launcher installation manually and check whether the OptiFine version is available.
A missing profile is different from a profile that appears but crashes. First confirm that the installation was created in the directory the Launcher actually uses.

The game crashes during startup
Common causes include a version mismatch, an incompatible Forge version, another mod conflict, an outdated graphics driver, a damaged installation, or an incompatible Java configuration. Shaders and resource packs can also cause startup or rendering problems.
Use this isolation sequence:
- Launch vanilla Minecraft 1.15.2.
- Launch standalone OptiFine 1.15.2 without Forge, mods, shaders, or custom resource packs.
- If standalone OptiFine works, add Forge or mods back one at a time.
- Temporarily remove shaders and custom resource packs.
- Check the crash report and
latest.log. - Confirm that every mod targets Minecraft 1.15.2.
- In a Forge setup, keep OptiFine last in the installation order where possible, as recommended in the official FAQ.
Performance is worse after installing OptiFine
OptiFine does not guarantee a frame-rate increase in every configuration. Start with a clean comparison using the default resource pack and no shaders. Then try lowering render distance, simulation distance where available, graphics quality, particles, and entity distance. Disable or reduce advanced effects that are expensive on your hardware.
Use the tooltips in Options → Video Settings to understand whether a setting favors performance or visual quality. Shaders and high-resolution resource packs can reduce performance even when OptiFine itself is installed correctly.
Chunks flicker or visual glitches appear
OptiFine identifies Chunk Loading: Multi-Core as a possible cause of flickering when the graphics driver does not support it correctly. Disable the relevant multi-core chunk-loading setting and test again. Updating the graphics driver may also help, but avoid changing several variables at once when diagnosing the problem.
Shaders do not appear
Shaders are optional. If they are missing:
- Confirm that the Launcher is running OptiFine rather than vanilla 1.15.2.
- Use a shader pack that supports Minecraft 1.15.2.
- Keep the shader pack as a ZIP unless its instructions specifically require extraction.
- Enable shaders through OptiFine’s video-settings interface.
- Check whether the computer supports the shader’s rendering requirements.
How to disable or uninstall OptiFine
For the standalone setup, simply select the vanilla release 1.15.2 profile in the Launcher instead of the OptiFine profile. This leaves the OptiFine installation available without using it.
To remove a Forge installation, close Minecraft and remove the OptiFine file from that instance’s mods folder. Work only in the correct instance directory, and back up the instance first. Do not remove the whole Minecraft folder unless you have separately backed up your worlds and configuration files.
Version and compatibility reminder
The important matching rule is:
Minecraft 1.15.2 + OptiFine 1.15.2 + compatible Forge/mods/shadersDo not combine OptiFine 1.15.2 with a newer Minecraft installation. If you do not specifically need 1.15.2, a newer Minecraft version may be the simpler choice, but older 1.15.2-specific mods and worlds may not transfer cleanly to it.
The current Minecraft Launcher’s operating-system requirements can change over time and should not be treated as historical requirements imposed specifically by OptiFine 1.15.2. Consult Minecraft’s current Java Edition system requirements for launcher support information.
