On a conventional Fedora Workstation, KDE Plasma, or another mutable desktop, install Steam from RPM Fusion. On Fedora Silverblue or Kinoite, use the Flathub Flatpak instead. RPM Fusion integrates more directly with Fedora and external drives; Flatpak is usually the simpler Atomic-desktop choice but needs explicit filesystem permissions for libraries outside your home directory. Neither route is an official Valve Fedora package: Valve’s Linux instructions are Ubuntu/Debian-oriented, while the Flathub build is community-provided.
After installation, Steam can run native Linux games immediately. Enable Steam Play/Proton for many Windows games, but check each title because compatibility varies.
Before you begin
- This guide covers Fedora Workstation, KDE Plasma, Silverblue, Kinoite, and other Fedora desktop spins on standard
x86_64PCs. - Check your release and architecture:
cat /etc/fedora-release
uname -mValve lists a 64-bit x86-compatible system, internet access, both 64-bit and 32-bit graphics drivers, and 5 GB of available storage as baseline Linux-client requirements (Valve’s Steam for Linux requirements). Five gigabytes is a client baseline, not a realistic allowance for a modern game library.

Method 1: Install Steam with RPM Fusion
This is the default choice for mutable Fedora installations. It uses DNF, gives Steam relatively direct access to the host graphics stack and filesystem, and is convenient for libraries on additional drives.
- Enable RPM Fusion Free and Nonfree. The release packages use your installed Fedora version automatically:
sudo dnf install -y

steamYou can also open Steam from the application menu. On first launch, let the client update its files, then sign in or create an account and choose a library location.
RPM Fusion is a widely used Fedora-focused third-party source, not a Valve-maintained Fedora package. Valve’s official Linux repository documents a Debian/Ubuntu .deb workflow rather than an RPM (Steam for Linux). RPM Fusion’s setup documentation is available at docs.fedoraproject.org and rpmfusion.org.
Method 2: Install Steam with Flatpak
Flatpak is generally the better fit for Silverblue and Kinoite, whose host systems are image-based, and for users who prefer a sandboxed application with its own runtime updates. Fedora’s common Workstation, Silverblue, and Kinoite configurations normally include Flatpak, although Flathub may still need enabling (Flatpak’s Fedora setup).
- Add Flathub if necessary:
flatpak remote-add --if-not-exists flathub
https://dl.flathub.org/repo/flathub.flatpakrepo- Install Steam:
flatpak install -y flathub com.valvesoftware.Steam- Launch it:
flatpak run com.valvesoftware.SteamOr select Steam in the desktop menu. The application ID is com.valvesoftware.Steam. The Flathub listing states that this package is community-provided and not officially supported by Valve (Flathub Steam listing).
Give Flatpak access to another game drive
A sandbox may not see a library mounted outside the locations it can access by default. Grant only the directory containing the Steam library:
flatpak override --user
--filesystem=/mnt/games
com.valvesoftware.SteamReplace /mnt/games with the actual mount point, then restart Steam. Avoid granting unrestricted access to the entire filesystem unless you consciously accept the security trade-off. The Flathub listing documents the same narrowly scoped override pattern.

Install one format deliberately. Running both can create separate Steam data, shortcuts, and library state. If you switch, identify your existing library and back up saves that are not synchronized with Steam Cloud before removing anything.
First launch and installing a game
- Start Steam and allow its client/runtime update to finish.
- Sign in or create your Steam account.
- Open Steam > Settings > Storage (the exact label can change) and choose or add a library location.
- Install a native Linux title first, or configure Proton before installing a Windows title.
- Test a known-compatible game before troubleshooting a demanding or anti-cheat-dependent release.
Download size and startup time vary with the client version, runtime updates, network, storage, and game.
Enable Proton for Windows games
Proton is Valve’s Steam Play compatibility tool, based on Wine and related components (Proton repository). It does not make every Windows game work.
- Open Steam, then Settings.
- Select Compatibility (older clients may use Steam Play wording).
- Enable the option equivalent to Enable Steam Play for supported titles.
- Optionally enable the option equivalent to Enable Steam Play for all other titles.
- Restart Steam if requested.
- For one game, open its Properties, choose Compatibility, and enable Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool.
For a title-specific reality check, read recent reports on ProtonDB. Look for the tested Proton version, launch options, controller or video fixes, and multiplayer anti-cheat notes. Community ratings are evidence, not a guarantee; updates to the game, kernel, driver, or Proton can change results.

Fedora’s Mesa stack generally supplies Intel and AMD graphics support, but the exact driver, firmware, Vulkan components, and 32-bit packages depend on the Fedora release and GPU generation. Keep Fedora repositories enabled and update normally.
NVIDIA
NVIDIA systems may require a matching proprietary driver path. Package choice varies by release, GPU generation, laptop hybrid-graphics design, and whether the system is Atomic. Do not apply a universal driver script; use the driver instructions appropriate to your Fedora edition and hardware.
Why 32-bit libraries matter
A 64-bit Fedora installation can still need 32-bit graphics components for Steam and Proton. Valve explicitly lists both 64-bit and 32-bit graphics drivers. If DNF mentions packages such as mesa-vulkan-drivers.i686, mesa-libGL.i686, NVIDIA 32-bit libraries, or Vulkan ICD providers, verify the GPU vendor, Fedora/RPM Fusion repositories, metadata, and matching driver stack. Do not mix random repositories, download individual libraries manually, or use --skip-broken as a generic fix.

Hybrid laptops
Steam may start on the integrated GPU while a game uses the discrete GPU, or the reverse. Verify GPU selection with your desktop’s graphics controls and driver documentation rather than assuming one environment variable works for every laptop.
Troubleshooting
DNF says “No match for argument: steam”
- RPM Fusion may not be enabled, metadata may be stale, or the wrong Fedora release repository may be configured.
- On Silverblue or Kinoite, use Flatpak unless you have a specific reason to layer packages.
sudo dnf repolist
sudo dnf clean all
sudo dnf makecache
sudo dnf install steamIf the repository setup is wrong, reinstall the RPM Fusion release packages using the version-independent commands above.
Steam opens but a game immediately returns to the Play button
- Test a native Linux game.
- Test a well-documented Proton title.
- Try another Proton version under Properties > Compatibility.
- Verify the game files.
- Read recent ProtonDB reports.
- Run
steamfrom a terminal and note errors. - Recheck
vulkaninfo --summaryand 32-bit graphics packages. - Confirm that the library path is accessible to your RPM or Flatpak installation.
- Update Fedora, Steam, Flatpak runtimes, and graphics drivers.
Other causes include a game launcher, anti-cheat incompatibility, an NTFS mount, or a hybrid-GPU selection problem. Proton cannot guarantee compatibility with kernel-level anti-cheat, DRM, codecs, launchers, or every controller.

Flatpak cannot see a second drive
Grant the specific library directory with flatpak override --user, restart Steam, and confirm that the drive is mounted consistently and writable by your Linux user. NTFS adds risk: Windows Fast Startup or hibernation can leave the volume unsafe, and missing Unix permissions or symlink behavior can affect some Proton games. NTFS is not automatically unusable, but it requires more care than a native Linux filesystem.

External tools do not work with Flatpak
Mod managers, shader tools, recording utilities, overlays, launchers, and Proton-management tools may need explicit sandbox access. That is a permission trade-off of the Flatpak format, not proof that Steam itself is broken.
SELinux reports a denial
Do not disable SELinux as a first step. If an actual denial is recorded, inspect it narrowly:
journalctl -b | grep -i -E 'steam|selinux|avc'Restore file contexts only after the affected path and context problem are established.

For RPM Fusion:
sudo dnf remove steamFor Flatpak:
flatpak uninstall com.valvesoftware.SteamRemoving the client does not necessarily remove every game file or user-data directory. Before switching formats, locate the existing Steam library and back up unsynchronized saves. Reuse the library in the new installation only after confirming ownership, mount permissions, and the correct path.

Is Steam free on Fedora?
The Steam client is a free download from Steam; individual games have prices that vary by title, region, sale, and publisher.

Is Steam in Fedora’s default software repositories?
Not normally through Fedora’s standard repositories alone. Mutable Fedora users typically use RPM Fusion; Atomic users commonly use Flathub.

No. Proton is for Windows games. A native Linux build runs through Steam without a Proton compatibility layer.
Can Fedora run every Windows Steam game?

Does Steam work on Silverblue and Kinoite?
