Steam is free to install. Download it from Valve’s official Steam page, then follow the steps for your computer. The client is already included with SteamOS on Steam Deck, so Deck owners normally do not need to install it.
What Steam is—and what you need
Steam is Valve’s game storefront, launcher, update service, and community platform. Installing the client does not install games: you choose and download those separately. The client is free; games, downloadable content, and some software may cost money. You can install Steam without buying a game, but you need a Steam account to sign in and download most games.
- A Windows PC, Mac, or Linux computer. Valve supports these desktop platform families, but individual games do not necessarily support all of them. See Valve’s platform documentation; its historical operating-system minimums should not be treated as current consumer requirements.
- An internet connection for downloading Steam, signing in, updates, and games.
- Permission to install applications, plus enough free storage for Steam and the games you choose. Games usually require much more space than the client.
- An existing Steam account, or an email address to use during account creation.
- For gaming, an up-to-date operating system and graphics drivers. Check each game’s store page for its supported operating systems and system requirements.
Download Steam safely
- Go to store.steampowered.com/about.
- Select Install Steam. Use the installer offered for your operating system.
- Run or open the downloaded installer. If the file is for another operating system, or it came from an unofficial download site, do not run it; return to Valve’s page and download the appropriate one.
Avoid installers from advertisements, third-party download sites, unofficial mirrors, and pages claiming to provide cracked games or bypass Steam login.

Install Steam on Windows
- On Valve’s official download page, select Install Steam and download the Windows installer.
- Open the downloaded file. If Windows displays a security or User Account Control prompt, proceed only after confirming that you downloaded it from Valve’s official site.
- Choose the setup language, select an installation folder or accept the default, and choose Install.
- When setup finishes, let Steam open and download any client updates.
- Sign in, or choose the account-creation option and follow the prompts.
- Check that the Store and Library pages load.
If you do not have administrator access, use a permitted installation folder if the setup allows it, or ask the device administrator. Do not disable antivirus software indiscriminately to get the installer to run.

Install Steam on macOS
- Open Valve’s official download page and select Install Steam.
- Open the downloaded disk image.
- If the installer window asks you to, drag Steam into the Applications folder.
- Open Steam from Applications or Launchpad. If macOS displays a security prompt, proceed only if you verified the download came from Valve’s official site.
- Sign in or create an account, then let Steam update.
Mac compatibility depends on both the Mac and the game. Intel and Apple silicon Macs can have different compatibility behavior, and a game being listed on Steam does not mean it has a macOS version. Check the game’s platform support and requirements before downloading.
Install Steam on Linux
Valve documents a native .deb installation for Ubuntu or Ubuntu LTS. Other Linux distributions may offer Steam through their own package managers; their package format and support can differ. Valve’s Steam for Linux README lists Ubuntu or Ubuntu LTS with a 64-bit kernel as its baseline, along with an x86-64/AMD64 processor supporting CMPXCHG16B and SSE3, at least 512 MB of RAM, 5 GB of available storage, an internet connection for initial installation, and 64-bit and 32-bit graphics drivers and glibc. It specifies glibc 2.31 or newer from August 15, 2025 onward; older Ubuntu releases may stop working in future client releases. These are Linux client requirements, not Windows or macOS requirements, and the 5 GB figure does not include games.

Ubuntu graphical installation
- From Valve’s official Steam page, download the Linux package identified in Valve’s documentation as
steam_latest.deb. - Open the downloaded
.debfile and allow Ubuntu Software Center to install it. - Launch Steam from the application menu, allow it to update, then sign in or create an account.

After downloading the package to your Downloads folder, open a terminal and run:

gdebi steam_latest.debIf the package is in a different folder, change to that folder or provide the full path to the file. For SteamVR on Linux, Valve recommends the native Ubuntu .deb and warns that unsupported Snap or Flatpak packages can interfere with DRM leasing and asynchronous reprojection. Sign in and install a game
- Open Steam and choose Sign in if you already have an account. New users can choose the account-creation option and follow Steam’s email-verification and setup prompts.
- Open Store, search for a game, and select it to open its store page.
- Check its operating-system support and system requirements. Buy or claim it if required.
- Select Install, choose a library location, and confirm. Steam downloads and installs the game.
- When installation finishes, find the game in Library and select Play.
A download’s displayed speed does not tell the whole story. Steam may be unpacking, verifying, or writing files while a game installs, which can make the process CPU- and disk-intensive. Storage performance, game size, and network conditions also affect completion time. Valve discusses these factors in its network and Wi-Fi troubleshooting guide.
Choose where your games are stored
For a first installation, the default library location is usually the simplest choice. If the system drive is short on space, choose a suitable secondary internal drive when Steam offers a library location. External drives can work, but their connection, power, filesystem, and performance can affect access; do not disconnect a drive while Steam is downloading or writing game files.

On Steam Deck, microSD storage is supported. The Deck formats a supported card to ext4 with casefolding; see the Steam Deck FAQ. A card’s write speed can affect how long game installations take.
Steam Deck: Steam is normally already installed
Steam is integrated into SteamOS, so Steam Deck owners normally use the built-in client rather than installing the Windows, macOS, or Ubuntu desktop client. Installing the Steam client on a computer is different from installing or recovering SteamOS.

If SteamOS is damaged or has been replaced, use Valve’s SteamOS recovery instructions. Read the selected recovery option carefully: factory reset, erasing user data, rollback, and re-imaging are different actions, and some can erase local data.
To check a game on Deck, look for its Deck Verified status. Valve’s compatibility categories are Verified (works well out of the box), Playable (may need manual adjustments), Unsupported (currently not functional on Deck), and Unknown (not yet reviewed). Ratings apply to individual games and may change.
Troubleshoot common installation problems
The installer will not download or is the wrong file
- Return to Valve’s official download page and select the installer for your operating system.
- Confirm the download completed. If it appears incomplete or will not open, download a fresh copy from that page.
- Delete a suspicious file from an unofficial source without running it.
The installer will not open, or Steam closes after launch
- Restart the computer and try again.
- Check that the computer has free storage and that your account can install software.
- Redownload the installer from Valve’s official page.
- Check that the operating system is current enough for the Steam client and that security software is not blocking it. Verify the file’s source before allowing it; do not leave security protections disabled.
Steam is stuck updating, installing, or writing to a library
- If disk activity is continuing, give Steam time to finish its work.
- Check free space and confirm the library drive is connected and writable.
- Restart Steam, then restart the computer if needed. Avoid interrupting Steam while it is actively writing files unless it is clearly frozen.
Steam cannot connect or update
Check whether your internet connection works elsewhere and whether a proxy, firewall, or restricted network is blocking Steam. University networks and proxies may block ports Steam needs. Ask the network administrator about restrictions instead of randomly changing ports. Valve’s network troubleshooting page covers these issues.

That is a game-launch problem, not necessarily a Steam installation problem. Check the game’s operating-system support and requirements, update the operating system and graphics drivers, and verify the game files in Steam. Valve’s launch troubleshooting guidance also recommends checking for interference from non-essential software.
Linux reports missing dependencies
Check that you are using a current supported Ubuntu or Ubuntu LTS release, a 64-bit system, compatible glibc, and both 64-bit and 32-bit graphics drivers. A dependency problem with the client is different from a compatibility problem with an individual game or its Proton configuration.
