Before following current launch steps, confirm that an Engine 4.2 image and its license terms are actually available to your AWS account and Region. The steps below explain the current documented deployment path without presenting it as a version-specific 4.2 installation.
Is Wowza Streaming Engine 4.2 available on AWS Marketplace?
Do not assume that a new AWS Marketplace deployment will install Engine 4.2. Wowza’s current Linux EC2 guide says its latest preconfigured virtual machine runs Engine 4.12.0. The AWS Marketplace listing reviewed for this guide is a current Linux BYOL offer, not evidence that a new subscriber can select Engine 4.2. Wowza also says the legacy “Wowza Streaming Engine 4: Standard” option is unavailable to new subscribers, although existing legacy subscribers may continue using a subscription until they cancel it. Check the current listing and your account’s available offers before proceeding. Wowza’s Linux EC2 guide and deployment options overview describe current choices, not confirmed 4.2 screens or terms.
Choose a Marketplace license option
An Amazon Machine Image (AMI) is a preconfigured virtual machine image that you launch as an EC2 instance. Wowza’s current guidance describes two licensing approaches; the exact offer, price, and terms can change, so inspect them in Marketplace before subscribing.

What to prepare before launching
- AWS access: Sign in to the AWS account in which you intend to run the EC2 instance, and choose the Region where you plan to deploy.
- License decision: Decide whether you will use an eligible license you already own or subscribe to an offer with embedded software licensing. Check the listing before committing.
- Workload and instance choice: Select an EC2 family and size appropriate to your stream count and processing needs. The cited documentation does not establish one universally correct instance size for every codec, stream count, or transcoding workload.
- Network plan: Determine which streaming protocols you will use and which management addresses should be allowed to connect. Avoid exposing administration ports broadly.
- Access credentials: Choose an EC2 key pair and plan for secure administration of the instance and Engine Manager.
Launch the current documented Linux AMI
The following is the broad flow in Wowza’s current Linux EC2 guidance. AWS console labels and available offer details can vary; these steps are not verified as the exact Engine 4.2 sequence.
- Open the offer: In AWS Marketplace, choose the current Wowza Streaming Engine Linux BYOL or paid offer that matches your license situation. Review the software and infrastructure billing terms.
- Start deployment: Launch through the EC2 console or Marketplace 1-Click, as supported by the offer. The current guide describes selecting an AMI version, AWS Region, and EC2 instance type.
- Configure the instance: Set the instance details, storage, tags, key pair, and security group. Choose resources for the workload rather than relying on a universal sizing recommendation.
- Set inbound rules: Allow only the ports required by the protocols and administration approach you intend to use. For example, Wowza’s guide gives TCP 1935 for RTMP and TCP 8086–8088 for Engine Manager. Limit management access to trusted IP addresses or a suitable private network.
- Launch and note the address: Start the instance and record its public or private address as appropriate for your network design. Use the Manager path specified by your listing or guide.
- Open Engine Manager: The Marketplace listing reviewed gives the address pattern
http://[public-domain-name]:8088/enginemanager. Replace the bracketed host with the instance’s public domain name if that is the address you use. Complete the first-run setup shown by the deployed image; the available sources do not establish the exact first-run screens for Engine 4.2. - Configure and test the stream: Set up the intended application and stream in the deployed Engine version, then test with the actual protocol and client you plan to use. A running EC2 instance alone does not confirm that an application or stream is working.
Wowza’s current guide notes that Marketplace 1-Click uses a default startup package and does not allow a custom Wowza startup package. Use the EC2 console if your deployment requires a custom startup package, and verify this behavior against the offer you are launching; it is current-guide information, not confirmed Engine 4.2 behavior.

Open only the ports your streaming design needs
Wowza’s default-port reference lists the following defaults. They are options for relevant protocols and services, not a checklist to expose wholesale. Configure both the EC2 security group and any host firewall, and restrict management access.

For example, a configuration using RTMP and Engine Manager may need TCP 1935 and the required Manager access, but it does not automatically need every listed port. Keep administrative access off broad public ingress; expose viewer-facing ports only as required by the protocols enabled in your setup.

Verify the service and diagnose connection failures
Wowza’s general installation guide gives http://[wowza-ip-address]:1935/ServerVersion as a way to check whether a server responds and reports its version. Treat this as general verification guidance, not a guarantee specific to a Marketplace image running Engine 4.2. The Marketplace listing reviewed gives the Engine Manager pattern above. Use the endpoint appropriate to the deployed version and configuration.

How to think about AWS deployment costs
Marketplace deployment can involve more than one charge: AWS infrastructure costs for EC2 instance time, storage, and bandwidth, and, depending on the offer, software subscription costs. A paid Marketplace offer may combine software licensing with AWS billing, while BYOL requires a license supplied separately. The amount depends on the chosen listing, Region, instance, storage, and usage. Review the live offer and AWS cost details before launching; no single total is established for every deployment.
