On an Xbox One or Xbox Series X with a disc drive, insert the compatible game disc and follow the console’s installation prompts. Keep the disc available if the game requires it to launch. To restore progress, sign in to the Xbox profile that owns the save, connect to Xbox network, and let any save synchronization finish before playing or resolving a sync conflict.
Check that your Xbox can use game discs
This guide applies to Xbox One and Xbox Series X models with an optical disc drive. Xbox Series S is digital-only and cannot install a game from a physical disc. Microsoft’s August 26, 2026 announcement describes a disc-based entitlement feature for supported Xbox One and Xbox Series X games; it does not mean every disc or console model is eligible.
Install or reinstall the game from the disc
- Sign in to the Xbox profile you use for the game.
- Insert the compatible game disc into the console’s disc drive.
- Follow the installation prompts shown on the console. The installed game files and the game’s saved progress are separate; reinstalling the game is not a reason to delete its save data.
- Leave the disc available. Some games require it in the drive to verify ownership and launch.
For backward-compatible games, Microsoft says a supported game downloads from the disc and the disc must remain inserted to play. That guidance is specific to games on Microsoft’s backward-compatibility list; installation behavior can differ for other titles. See Microsoft’s backward-compatibility guidance.
Let the save sync before continuing
- Connect the console to Xbox network and make sure you are signed in to the profile that has the game’s progress.
- Launch the installed game and wait for any save synchronization to finish before playing.
- If the game presents a save-conflict choice, do not select an option until you understand which copy it keeps. A newer cloud save may replace stale local data during synchronization.
Microsoft’s Game Saves sync flow documentation describes cloud-download synchronization and explains that local data can be treated as stale when newer cloud data is available. It is developer documentation, so not every game will show an identical prompt.

Do not confuse removing a local save with deleting it everywhere
A Microsoft Community answer distinguishes “Delete from console,” which removes a local copy, from “Delete everywhere,” which removes the save from the console, cloud, and other consoles. If your goal is to preserve progress, do not choose “Delete everywhere.” Use that option only when you intend permanent deletion. The distinction is explained in this Microsoft Community answer.
If your progress does not return
Cloud recovery depends on the save having synchronized. If your latest progress existed only on the console and never reached Xbox network, reinstalling the game cannot guarantee that it can be recovered. Avoid broad save-deletion choices while you check the game’s support options, and preserve the console’s current data rather than taking further steps that may remove it.
