To join the YouTube Partner Program (YPP), meet an eligible audience threshold, satisfy YouTube’s account and channel requirements, then apply in YouTube Studio under Earn. You must accept the base terms and link an active AdSense for YouTube account through Studio. YouTube reviews the channel before deciding; meeting the numbers qualifies you to apply, but does not guarantee acceptance. This guide reflects YouTube’s rules checked on October 3, 2026. Check YouTube’s current YPP overview and your Studio Earn page for changes or location-specific availability.
How many subscribers do you need to get monetized?
As of October 3, 2026, YouTube has two distinct entry routes. The lower threshold is for expanded YPP features such as eligible fan-funding options and Shopping; it does not by itself qualify a channel for ad-revenue sharing. The higher threshold is the current entry route for ad and YouTube Premium revenue sharing. Each feature also has its own eligibility terms.

These are YouTube eligibility thresholds, not guarantees of acceptance or earnings. YouTube’s expanded YPP overview explains the lower route; its monetization overview describes the features and their conditions.
What counts toward the thresholds?
- Shorts Feed watch time does not count toward the 4,000-hour public watch-time route. Shorts creators can instead qualify using the specified Shorts views route.
- Views and watch time from paid advertising campaigns do not count toward eligibility thresholds. YouTube notes that qualifying follow-on organic views may count.
- The expanded route requires three valid public uploads during the 90-day lookback in addition to its subscriber and viewing requirement. Do not assume unlisted, private, or deleted uploads satisfy that condition.
A scheduled threshold change in 2027
YouTube announced that, beginning February 1, 2027, the ad and Premium entry threshold for new applicants is scheduled to become 1,000 subscribers plus either 8,000 qualified watch hours in 365 days or 20 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days. YouTube says this change will not affect creators already in YPP. The announced expanded fan-funding and Shopping entry route remains 500 subscribers, three valid public uploads, and either 3,000 watch hours or 3 million Shorts views. Existing partners are asked to accept updated terms by January 31, 2027 to continue fully monetizing. These are announced future rules, not the thresholds in effect on October 3, 2026; check YouTube’s YPP changes announcement as the date approaches.

Check the account and channel requirements
Audience numbers are only part of eligibility. YouTube’s standard YPP overview lists these requirements:

- Your channel follows YouTube’s channel monetization policies.
- YPP is available in your country or region. Expanded YPP and individual features have their own availability limits, so use the Earn page for your channel rather than relying on an old country list.
- Your channel has no active Community Guidelines strikes.
- 2-Step Verification is enabled on the Google Account.
- Your channel has access to advanced features.
- You have one active AdSense for YouTube account linked, or you are ready to create one during the Studio application flow. Do not create a new AdSense for YouTube account outside that flow.
Some features have additional conditions. For example, YouTube lists an age requirement of 18, or an adult guardian to handle AdSense payments, for ad revenue; some fan-funding features require the creator to be 18. See YouTube’s feature-specific monetization requirements for the feature you intend to use.
How to apply for YPP in YouTube Studio
- Sign in to YouTube using the Google Account for the channel.
- Open YouTube Studio and select Earn from the left menu.
- When Studio shows that the channel is eligible, select Apply Now.
- Review and accept the base terms.
- On the AdSense step, select Start to link an existing active AdSense for YouTube account or set one up through Studio.
- Check the Get Reviewed step. In Progress means YouTube has received the application.
After acceptance, review and accept the monetization modules for the features you want. Joining YPP does not automatically turn on every earning feature. YouTube’s application overview has the current Studio flow.
What YouTube reviews—and how long it takes
YouTube says automated systems and human reviewers assess the channel as a whole against its monetization policies. Reviewers may consider the channel’s main theme; its most-viewed and newest videos; videos responsible for the largest share of watch time; metadata such as titles and thumbnails; and the About section. This is not an exhaustive checklist. YouTube’s channel monetization policies explain the standards.

Make original value clear
YouTube expects monetized content to be the creator’s original work. Borrowed material needs significant transformation, while repetitive or mass-produced generic material may not qualify. A compilation, gameplay video, reaction, or other format is not automatically approved or rejected by its label alone: the channel still has to meet policy requirements, and reviewers assess the work and channel context. No format or editing change guarantees acceptance.
Track the decision
YouTube says a review typically takes about one month. Application volume, system issues, resource limits, or additional reviewer checks can make it take longer. Monitor the status under Earn in Studio. If your count falls below the threshold after you have qualified and applied, YouTube says that alone does not stop the review; changing video privacy or deleting videos may affect the application.

If YouTube rejects your application
Read the policy named in the Earn area and assess the channel as a whole before choosing what to do. YouTube’s rejection guidance gives different timelines for appealing and reapplying:

Do continuous livestreams help you qualify?
Only eligible public watch time can count toward the watch-hour route; a livestream is not a shortcut around YPP requirements. The format must still comply with YouTube’s monetization policies, and paid campaign watch time does not count. For gaming channels, make sure the stream and any music, cutscenes, or other third-party material have the rights needed for your use. YouTube’s review considers originality and the channel as a whole, not just accumulated hours.
