On a Windows 11 streaming PC, enable Do not disturb, review its allowed exceptions, and use an OBS capture source that includes only the content you need. Then check the actual stream output before leaving it unattended. Do Not Disturb routes most notifications away from banners, but alarms, reminders, and apps you allow can still appear.
Turn on Do Not Disturb in Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings > System > Notifications.
- Turn on Do not disturb. For a manual toggle, open Notification Center from the taskbar and select the bell icon marked “zZ”.
- Expand Turn on do not disturb automatically. Choose time-of-day or activity rules that fit the PC’s streaming schedule. Microsoft lists time of day, display duplication, gaming, and full-screen use as possible conditions.
- Open Set priority notifications. Remove apps, calls, or reminders that should not be allowed to interrupt the stream. If you need to leave an alert enabled for operational safety, consider whether its banner could expose private information.
- Review notification settings for individual apps. Windows lets you disable an app’s notifications or turn off its banners while retaining its entries in Notification Center.
Do Not Disturb does not mean every banner is blocked: Microsoft says alarms, reminders, and apps of your choice can still show banners, while other notifications go to Notification Center. Automatic rules are conditions to configure, not a guarantee that protection will stay active throughout every 24-hour stream. Check the setting after restarts, system updates, or other changes to the PC.
Do not rely on a timed Focus session for an unattended stream
Starting a Focus session turns on Do Not Disturb, but Focus is a timed session. Account for the timer and the session ending; do not assume one session will cover an all-day stream.
Choose what OBS captures
Windows-level notification controls and OBS capture selection solve different parts of the problem. Do Not Disturb handles most Windows notifications but allows configured exceptions. A narrower capture source can keep unrelated parts of the desktop out of the scene, but depends on the app and what the scene needs.

- Window Capture: Captures one window. Choose it when the stream content is a single application and that app works correctly with this method.
- Display Capture: Captures a display. It is broader than capturing one intended app, so use it when the show genuinely needs the whole desktop.
OBS also documents Settings > General > Hide OBS windows from screen capture. This excludes OBS windows; it does not suppress notifications from other apps. Moving OBS to a secondary display can keep its controls off the main captured display, but it likewise does not silence notification banners.
Preflight the stream before leaving it unattended
- Enable Do Not Disturb and inspect the priority exceptions and automatic rules.
- Confirm the OBS scene uses the intended capture source and does not include desktop areas the program does not need.
- Inspect the actual program output or a private preview. Check what happens when the kinds of alerts you expect are present, rather than assuming the controls cover every app or overlay.
- Verify Do Not Disturb again after a restart or system change, and check that the chosen automatic rule still fits the stream schedule.
Microsoft and OBS document these controls, not a universal guarantee that every notification provider, overlay, or capture path will keep every alert off a stream. A real output check is the practical way to catch an exception or scene issue before viewers see it.
Windows 10: legacy guidance
Windows 10 uses older Focus Assist menus rather than the Windows 11 route above. Microsoft states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; after that date it no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for the system. For a current always-on streaming PC, prioritize moving to a supported operating system. If you continue using Windows 10, verify its Focus Assist and app-notification controls on that specific build.
