For unattended recovery, use an operating-system process supervisor or watchdog to relaunch OBS, then verify that the correct stream and destination event are live. If viewers cannot see a gap during the restart, use an independent relay or cloud playout layer with tested standby behavior. These measures address technical continuity; they do not clear the rights to the Indian music you broadcast.
First identify what failed
A stream can stop because OBS lost its connection while the application is still running, or because OBS itself exited. Those are different failures and need different recovery mechanisms.
- OBS is still open, but disconnected: inspect the connection and destination status. OBS’s “Automatically Reconnect” control can retry a connection, subject to the settings and destination behavior.
- OBS has exited: a separate supervisor must detect the stopped process and launch it again. Automatic reconnect is not a process supervisor.
- OBS is running, but the picture or sound is wrong: treat this as a scene, media, rendering, or encoder problem rather than assuming the connection has recovered.
OBS says, “There are no OBS servers – the connection goes directly from your computer to the streaming service.” (OBS Project Help Portal.) That makes it important to check the platform’s own live status as well as the OBS window.
Set up connection recovery in OBS
In the installed OBS version, find the “Automatically Reconnect” option and its retry-delay and maximum-retries controls. Exact menu locations and defaults can vary by release and output mode, so confirm the labels in your version rather than relying on a default value from another setup.

Choose retry behavior appropriate to your destination and test it with a private or otherwise low-risk stream. Reconnect attempts can help when the network or destination connection drops while OBS stays open; they cannot restart an application that has crashed.
OBS identifies dropped frames as a connection issue: the link to the destination may be unstable or unable to keep up with the configured bitrate. A backup internet connection can help with an internet outage, but not with an OBS crash. A UPS can help with power loss, but it does not restart faulty software by itself.

Use a process supervisor to relaunch OBS
For a self-hosted setup, configure an operating-system supervisor or watchdog to detect an unexpected OBS exit and start the application again. The exact tool and setup depend on your operating system; OBS’s documented controls do not prescribe a particular supervisor.
- Prepare the launch: make sure the supervisor starts the intended OBS installation and uses the profile and scene collection for the 24/7 stream. Confirm that media sources and any required scripts or plugins are available to the account running OBS.
- Set a restart delay or backoff: do not relaunch in a tight loop. If a plugin, script, media file, or encoder fault is triggering the crash, repeated immediate launches can reproduce the failure and obscure diagnosis.
- Capture logs: retain supervisor and OBS logs with timestamps so you can compare the exit, restart, and stream recovery.
- Check the destination after launch: confirm the intended event is actually live. A newly opened OBS window is not proof that the audience-facing stream resumed.
- Run a controlled restart drill: test the actual profile and stream workflow before depending on it during a valuable public broadcast.
OBS may show the diagnostic message “OBS Studio did not properly shut down” and offer Safe Mode. Safe Mode disables third-party plugins, scripting, and WebSockets for diagnosis. If OBS crashes again, use that option to help determine whether an add-on or script is involved, then review the logs and recent changes.

Decide whether a restart gap is acceptable
A supervisor can relaunch OBS, but viewers may still see an interruption while the process starts and reconnects. If the broadcast must show something during that interval, assess an independent relay or managed playout layer that can keep a standby slate or backup audio running while OBS is unavailable.
A relay is an architecture to evaluate, not a guaranteed fix. Before choosing one, ask the provider to document and demonstrate:

- How it ingests your OBS output and detects encoder loss.
- What fallback content it plays, and how quickly it switches.
- How it hands off to the destination and whether the destination event remains usable.
- Its monitoring, latency, operating cost, and support arrangements.
A 2021 OBS forum discussion contains community advice that a manually defined YouTube event may continue if it is not terminated in the YouTube dashboard. Treat that as historical user guidance, not a current guarantee: confirm current platform behavior and test the precise workflow privately. An intermediary server with a “Please Stand By” slate was also proposed in that discussion, but its behavior depends on the chosen service and configuration. (OBS Project forum discussion.)

- Check whether OBS exited. Inspect process status separately from the stream’s status. If OBS remains open, investigate the connection; if it exited, check that the supervisor relaunched it.
- If OBS is still open but disconnected, review connection status, destination settings, and automatic reconnect behavior. If dropped frames are reported, investigate network stability and whether the connection can sustain the configured bitrate.
- If OBS relaunched but the stream did not, verify the correct profile, scenes, media sources, and destination event. Check the platform’s live status rather than relying only on the encoder window.
- If OBS crashes repeatedly, review the crash report, logs, and recent plugin or script changes. Try Safe Mode to help isolate third-party plugins, scripts, or WebSockets.
- If the destination event appears unavailable, do not assume that restarting OBS will resume it. Check the platform’s current behavior and repeat the workflow in a controlled test.
A 2020 OBS forum reply discussed reconnecting after a network interruption; it is community guidance, not a promise that retries work for every outage or protocol. (OBS Project forum discussion.)

Clear music rights separately from stream uptime
A technically uninterrupted broadcast is not necessarily an authorized one. The Government of India’s Copyright Act, 1957 uses the term “communication to the public” for making a work or performance available to the public by display or diffusion. Its chapter on rights addresses musical works and sound recordings. (Copyright Office of India: Copyright Act, 1957.)
For a music stream, identify the rights in both the sound recording and the underlying work, then confirm that the permissions cover your catalogue, platform, territory, monetization, and broadcast duration. IPRS describes licensing for works in its repertoire, including communication through online streaming; PPL India describes permissions relating to sound recordings in the repertoire it controls. Neither source establishes clearance for every song or every channel. A consumer music subscription should not be assumed to authorize rebroadcasting.
For your specific catalogue and distribution, confirm the scope directly with the relevant rights holders or licensing organizations and check the platform’s current terms.
