How to Keep a 24/7 Kids’ Story Livestream Running After 12 Hours

YouTube may not capture a stream longer than 12 hours, but its archive warning is not a documented broadcast cutoff. Here’s how to keep a prerecorded kids’ story stream live and protect the replay.

YouTube does not document a 12-hour automatic cutoff for live broadcasts. Its warning is about archiving: streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If your children’s story stream needs to keep running, use a streaming setup that stays connected; if you also need a replay, make a separate recording rather than relying on YouTube to save one long broadcast.

What YouTube’s 12-hour warning actually means

YouTube Help says, “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” That is an archive warning, not a stated timer that ends the live signal. A broadcast may continue beyond 12 hours, but you should not assume YouTube will preserve it as a complete replay. YouTube Help: Archive live streams.

Rewind is a separate issue: YouTube notes that DVR may be limited or unavailable on very long streams, and viewer experience can vary by device or client. The detailed rewind limits sometimes repeated online come from a 2015 OBS Forums guide, not the current YouTube Help page, so they should not be treated as current guaranteed limits. YouTube Help: DVR on live streams.

Choose how to keep the stream live

For a prerecorded story stream, there are two practical approaches: send a feed from a computer using an encoder such as OBS, or use a cloud service that loops uploaded videos. The key difference is what must stay available and who handles recovery if the stream drops.

Approach What must stay available Recovery and replay considerations
Local encoder, such as OBS Your streaming computer, power, internet connection and streaming software. You monitor interruptions and plan reconnection. Keep a separate local recording if you need a dependable replay.
Cloud looping service The service runs the uploaded video; your home computer does not need to stay on. Check the provider’s recovery, archive, availability and pricing claims and terms. Do not assume a vendor’s claims are independently verified.

Run a prerecorded stream from a computer with OBS

OBS can send a video feed to YouTube, but an unattended local setup depends on the computer and connection remaining operational. YouTube and OBS sources cited here do not establish a minimum PC specification, a guaranteed bitrate, or an automatic-recovery procedure for every setup. Test your own configuration before relying on it for continuous operation.

  1. Confirm the channel can go live. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream and check the channel’s live-stream eligibility and any restrictions before you build an unattended setup.
  2. Prepare the story video. Use a recording you have permission to stream. In OBS, add the file as a Media Source and enable looping if you want it to repeat. Preview the beginning, end and transition before going live so you know what viewers will see when the file loops.
  3. Connect OBS to YouTube. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, choose YouTube as the service, and connect the account or enter the stream key from YouTube Studio. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or include it in a recording.
  4. Set and test the output. Choose resolution, frame rate and encoding settings that your computer, upload connection and YouTube stream setup can sustain. The sources here do not support a universal bitrate or keyframe recommendation for this particular stream, so use YouTube’s current live encoder guidance and test the result in Studio’s stream preview rather than guessing.
  5. Start the broadcast and check health. Start streaming in OBS, then confirm YouTube Studio shows the expected video and a healthy incoming signal. Keep an eye on dropped frames, network interruptions and encoder errors during an initial test.
  6. Plan for failures and replays. Keep the computer powered, prevent sleep, and consider how you will notice and respond to a lost connection, power cut or OBS crash. Test restart and reconnect behavior. If you need a complete archive, record locally as well as streaming; YouTube recommends a local archive backup because a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured.

Plan the replay and viewer experience

Need one continuous broadcast?

A single continuous stream is simpler for viewers who want to drop in at any time, but it is not a dependable way to guarantee one complete YouTube replay after the 12-hour threshold. A local recording provides a separate copy under your control. If separate replay chapters matter more than one uninterrupted live event, shorter sessions may be worth considering; weigh the improved separation against the schedule and interruptions your channel can accept.

Set the audience accurately

If the stories and presentation are directed to children, classify the content accurately as made for kids; do not choose a different audience setting just to retain engagement features. YouTube says made-for-kids live streams lose or restrict features including live chat and chat replay, comments on stream archives and upcoming streams, and reminder notifications. Personalized ads are disabled on live streams and Premieres, though contextual ads may appear. See YouTube Help: Set your channel or video’s audience.

Check rights and restrictions before starting

Confirm that you have rights to use every story, illustration, music track and other material both in the live broadcast and in any replay. YouTube identifies copyright matches and policy violations among possible reasons for livestream restrictions. Its guidance also says an account with an active live restriction may not use another channel to stream around that restriction. Review YouTube Help: Live streaming restrictions and resolve eligibility or policy issues through the proper channel.

Troubleshoot common interruptions

  • YouTube stops receiving the feed: Check the computer’s internet connection and OBS status, then confirm the stream key and YouTube Studio preview. If the stream key was exposed, replace it in Studio and update OBS.
  • OBS stops or the computer goes offline: Check power, sleep settings and software status. A local workflow has no guaranteed unattended recovery in the sources cited here; arrange monitoring and a restart plan.
  • The live stream is still running but no replay appears: A stream beyond 12 hours may not be captured. Use a local recording for a separate archive rather than treating this as proof that the live signal ended.
  • Viewers cannot rewind or use chat: Long-stream DVR behavior can be limited, and made-for-kids settings restrict chat and other features. Confirm the audience classification and set expectations for viewers without changing it to regain disabled features.
  • YouTube blocks or restricts the broadcast: Review Studio notices and YouTube’s restriction guidance, then address the copyright, policy or eligibility issue. Do not try to bypass an active live restriction through another channel.
