A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11If OBS closes, an external supervisor can reopen it—but that alone cannot guarantee an uninterrupted stream or that YouTube will resume the same live event. First determine whether OBS actually crashed or is still open with dropped frames or a lost connection; those failures need different fixes.
OBS crashed—will the stream restart?
Not necessarily. A process restart can bring OBS back, but the streaming platform controls whether a connection can rejoin the intended live event. The available YouTube guidance does not establish a universal reconnect window or promise that restarting an encoder restores the same broadcast. Before relying on unattended recovery, check the current behavior for your platform, event configuration, and encoder workflow.
Plan for three separate layers: recover the OBS process, confirm the destination can resume the broadcast you intend, and reduce network failures that can disconnect an otherwise-running OBS session. A watchdog addresses only the first layer.
First, distinguish an OBS crash from a connection problem
OBS closed or stopped responding
If OBS has exited, the encoder process is no longer running. You need process-level recovery—typically an external supervisor or an operating-system restart policy configured for your particular system. OBS WebSocket can provide an automation interface, but its existence does not make OBS a complete built-in crash watchdog. The appropriate supervisor setup depends on your OS, how OBS is launched, and the destination platform’s broadcast workflow.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
OBS is open, but frames drop or the stream disconnects
This points to the connection between your computer and the remote ingest server, or to a bitrate your connection cannot sustain. Repeated dropped frames can lead to disconnection even while OBS remains open. Relaunching OBS is not the first fix for this failure mode; investigate network stability and capacity instead. OBS Project’s dropped-frames and connection guide distinguishes these connection problems from an encoder process closing.
How to make OBS reopen automatically
- Choose a process supervisor appropriate to your setup. An external supervisor or OS restart policy can detect that OBS has exited and launch it again. The setup is OS- and launch-configuration-specific; there is no single safe set of service or task instructions for every computer.
- Test the restart deliberately. Confirm that OBS launches with the intended profile, scene collection, media sources, and streaming configuration. A process that reopens but does not reconnect as intended is not a recovered broadcast.
- Verify the platform-side event behavior. Check whether your event is reusable or scheduled and what happens when an encoder disconnects and reconnects. Test the workflow before depending on it unattended; a process restart does not establish that YouTube will resume the same live event.
- Protect OBS WebSocket if you use it for automation. OBS Studio has included WebSocket by default since version 28, and the interface supports external control and automation. OBS recommends password protection against unauthorized control. WebSocket is an interface for automation, not a guarantee of end-to-end broadcast recovery. See the OBS remote-control guide.
Fix dropped frames and network disconnects
When OBS stays open but loses frames or its connection, work through the network path before changing process-restart behavior.

- Try another ingest server. A different server may avoid a problematic route between your connection and the current ingest point.
- Set a bitrate your connection can sustain. OBS Project’s 2024 guidance calls 75% of total upload speed “a good starting point.” Treat it as a starting point, not a guarantee: actual stable upload capacity and the platform’s limits still matter. Avoid basing the setting on a peak speed that the connection cannot maintain.
- Use Ethernet if you currently stream over Wi-Fi. OBS recommends wired networking because Wi-Fi can be unstable. A Cat 6 Ethernet cable may help connect the streaming computer to the router, but it will not fix an OBS crash, a faulty ISP route, or inadequate upload capacity.
- Check software and hardware along the route. Security software, VPNs, bundled network utilities, outdated network drivers, routers, modems, and other network hardware can contribute to connection issues. Investigate those components; if OBS’s troubleshooting steps do not resolve the problem, contact your ISP.
Follow the OBS connection troubleshooting steps for the full diagnostic path.
Check YouTube access and kids’ audience settings
If YouTube is your destination, confirm that the channel is eligible to live stream and that its audience settings are accurate. YouTube says live-stream access requires channel verification and no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days; the person live streaming must be at least 16 years old. The age rule concerns the operator, not the intended audience. See YouTube’s live-streaming access requirements.

Set the audience for the live stream accurately in YouTube Studio. YouTube says designating content as Made for Kids restricts features including live chat and notifications. Do not change an accurate audience setting to preserve those features. After a restart, verify the platform-specific live workflow rather than assuming that the broadcast resumed with the intended event and settings. YouTube’s Made for Kids guidance explains the audience designation and associated restrictions.

| OBS with an external supervisor | The computer and its network remain part of the streaming path. | A supervisor may reopen OBS after a process exit; it does not by itself guarantee platform reconnection or uninterrupted viewing. | OBS provides scene and encoder configuration; automation depends on your setup. WebSocket offers an interface for external control. | Confirm the destination’s reconnect behavior and event configuration. You remain responsible for monitoring the local system and recovery. | No comparable total-cost or recovery-SLA figures are established here. |
| Cloud 24/7 streaming service | Streaming does not depend on a home computer staying on when the service runs the stream in the cloud. | Recovery and monitoring depend on the particular service; check its published behavior and limits. | Capabilities vary by service; confirm that it supports the workflow you need. | A service may still require a separate platform-side broadcast setup. YouTube describes Upstream.so as a cloud studio for 24/7 streams; this is an option to evaluate, not a tested recommendation. | No comparable prices or recovery SLAs are established here. |
| Standalone hardware encoder | Uses dedicated encoding hardware rather than a general-purpose OBS computer, but still has local power and network dependencies. | Hardware may remove dependence on the OBS process; it does not establish platform-side recovery or guarantee uninterrupted viewing. | Confirm the configuration and automation capabilities of the specific device. | Check how the device and destination handle a disconnect and what monitoring is available. YouTube lists AJA HELO Plus as a standalone hardware option to evaluate. | No comparable prices or recovery SLAs are established here. |
YouTube’s encoder guidance explains the encoder’s role and lists verified encoders; it also identifies Upstream.so for 24/7 streams. These descriptions establish categories to consider, not a reliability ranking. No measured OBS crash rate, recovery time, uptime percentage, or comparable reliability statistic is established for local OBS versus cloud or hardware encoding. See YouTube’s encoder setup guide.
