To run a 24/7 lo-fi hip-hop stream from a Mac mini, keep the Mac awake, use an encoder such as OBS to send a continuous program to YouTube Live, and monitor the stream and network. Sleep prevention is necessary for this local setup, but it does not guarantee recovery from a power, app, internet, or copyright interruption.
What you need before going live
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have had a live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days. Check the channel’s Live Control Room before scheduling a continuous stream. YouTube’s live-streaming tips cover eligibility and preflight checks.
- An encoder running on the Mac mini. OBS can send the audio-and-visual program to YouTube; it is free and open source. You do not need to buy encoder software for the documented workflow.
- Music and visuals you have permission to use for live streaming, in the relevant territories and for the intended duration. Confirm separately whether the license also covers monetization and archived broadcasts.
- A reliable power source and internet connection, plus a plan for noticing and responding to interruptions.
Prepare music and visuals you can legally stream
Build a continuous playlist or OBS scene from recordings and visuals whose rights cover your intended use. A license to listen to a track or use it in a regular video does not by itself establish permission for an always-on YouTube broadcast. Check live use, territories, duration, monetization, and whether the resulting broadcast may remain available as an archive.
YouTube scans live feeds for third-party content. Its guidance notes that even licensed content may interrupt a broadcast if the rights owner has not allowlisted your channel in Content ID. Confirm allowlisting with the rights owner or provider before you rely on a track for a continuous stream. YouTube’s copyright guidance explains live-stream scanning.
Set up the Mac mini and YouTube encoder
- Check channel access. Open YouTube’s Live Control Room and confirm the channel can stream. Review any current restrictions before you announce a schedule.
- Install and configure OBS. Download OBS from the official OBS project site. Create a scene with your authorized visual and audio sources, and add the playlist or loop you intend to run.
- Create or select the YouTube stream. In Live Control Room, get the stream URL and stream key for the stream you are setting up. In OBS, configure the YouTube service and enter those connection details. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance describes this workflow. Treat the key like a password: do not show it in a recording or share it publicly, and reset it if you think it has been exposed.
- Choose output settings you can sustain. Set the resolution and bitrate in OBS for the quality you intend to broadcast, then test those settings on the actual Mac and network. The sources cited here do not establish a single best bitrate or resolution for every connection, so do not assume a nominal internet speed will guarantee a stable stream.
- Stop automatic Mac sleep. On the Mac mini, open System Settings > Energy and enable Prevent automatic sleeping when the display is off, if that option is available. You can still let the display turn off. Labels and option availability vary by Mac and macOS version. Apple warns that preventing sleep may increase power consumption; see its desktop Energy settings guide.
- Run a test stream. Start with a test or unlisted broadcast. Start the encoder before the planned stream, check YouTube’s preview, and confirm picture, sound, and stability at the selected settings. YouTube recommends checking the preview and monitoring stream quality.
- Decide who will respond. Arrange how someone will notice a stopped stream, inspect the Mac and network, and restart the encoder or broadcast if needed. A machine left unattended without a monitoring and response plan is not the same as a guaranteed 24/7 service.
Keep watch on stream health
During the test and operation, check YouTube’s stream-health information and OBS for dropped frames. OBS explains that dropped frames can occur when a connection is unstable or cannot sustain the chosen bitrate; OBS may drop frames to avoid buffering. If stream health deteriorates, reduce the bitrate or output demands and test again rather than assuming the Mac is the cause. The OBS Help Portal explains dropped frames.

A wired network connection can reduce reliance on Wi-Fi, but it cannot prevent an internet-service outage. For power resilience, Apple documents UPS options for desktop Macs. Choose a UPS based on the load in watts, the runtime needed at that load, compatible outlets and plugs, and how shutdown and restart behavior will work for the Mac and network equipment. A UPS can help bridge some power interruptions; it does not guarantee uninterrupted streaming or automatic recovery from every failure.
What can interrupt a local 24/7 stream
- Mac sleeps: The encoder stops sending if the Mac goes to sleep. Check the Energy setting and confirm the Mac remains awake during a longer test.
- Internet becomes unstable or drops: OBS may drop frames when the connection cannot sustain the selected bitrate. Check the connection and stream health, then lower output demands if needed. A lost connection may require the owner to restart or troubleshoot the broadcast.
- Power fails: A UPS may provide temporary power depending on its sizing and the connected load. Apple’s guidance does not promise that every Mac, OBS, macOS, or network failure will automatically recover.
- YouTube detects third-party content: A live feed may be interrupted even when you believe you have a license, particularly if the rights owner has not allowlisted the channel in Content ID. Confirm the terms and allowlisting before going live.
- The encoder or stream stops: Sleep prevention alone does not restart OBS or restore every interrupted broadcast. Set up a way to notice a stopped stream and have someone able to investigate and relaunch it.
