Build the stream with music and visuals you have permission to broadcast, choose a conservative output, and test it on the exact Pi, power supply, network, and media you plan to use. Treat “24/7” as an operating goal—not a guarantee from YouTube or the hardware.
What you need before starting
- A Raspberry Pi and a power supply matched to that model. Raspberry Pi’s current recommendations include 5 V/5 A for Raspberry Pi 5 when using its full peripheral capability and 5 V/3 A for Raspberry Pi 4. These are power recommendations, not evidence of continuous-stream reliability. See Raspberry Pi’s getting-started guide.
- A stable internet connection with enough upload capacity for the stream plus headroom for normal variation. Ethernet is preferable when practical; the exact networking options depend on the Pi model.
- A lofi audio track or playlist and a still or lightly animated visual that you have permission to broadcast and, if relevant, monetize.
- An encoder available for your chosen Raspberry Pi OS and model. Check compatibility and actual encoding performance on that device; this guide does not establish a winning Pi model or encoder.
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. YouTube says first-time activation may take up to 24 hours, so do not leave setup until the planned start time.
Prepare the Pi for unattended operation
Install Raspberry Pi OS and enable remote access
For a headless setup, Raspberry Pi documents installing Raspberry Pi OS Lite with Raspberry Pi Imager and configuring networking and remote access. Set up Ethernet or Wi-Fi during imaging as supported by your model, then use SSH or Raspberry Pi Connect for first access. The official guide covers the current setup flow: Raspberry Pi getting started.
Plan a conservative workload
Start with a static image or low-motion visual and a modest target such as 720p30. A lighter visual may reduce encoder work, but it does not prove the Pi can sustain the stream. The appropriate resolution depends on the board, operating system, encoder, media, and upload connection. Observe CPU load, temperature behavior, dropped frames, audio continuity, and YouTube’s stream health during an extended test. Raspberry Pi and YouTube documentation do not specify a Pi-specific thermal or reliability threshold.
Arrange for the encoder to start automatically after boot, retain useful local logs, and use a process supervisor or restart policy to recover from an encoder crash. These are practical engineering measures, not guarantees of uninterrupted service. Keep the stream key out of logs and scripts that other users can read. A restart policy also cannot fix an unstable network or a YouTube-side interruption by itself.

Create the YouTube stream and protect its key
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room. Create a live stream or select the stream you plan to use.
- Copy the stream server URL and stream key shown for that stream. Enter them in the encoder’s YouTube/RTMP destination settings; use RTMPS if the encoder offers it and the server details support it. YouTube recommends RTMPS.
- Treat the stream key like a password. Do not publish it, put it in a public repository, or print it in public-facing logs. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
- Start the encoder and confirm that YouTube receives the signal in the Live Control Room. Review stream-health messages before making the broadcast public or announcing it.
YouTube’s encoder setup instructions explain stream creation, the server URL and key, and first-time activation: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
Set encoder output to match YouTube’s ingest guidance
Use YouTube’s published settings as the platform-side target, then verify that the Pi and connection can actually sustain them. YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest; H.264, H.265, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bit rate (CBR); up to 60 fps; a recommended two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds); and stereo audio at 44.1 kHz with 128 kbps audio bitrate. It recommends RTMPS. Confirm that the chosen encoder and Pi operating system support the settings you select.

| H.264 output | YouTube minimum bitrate | YouTube recommended bitrate | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 2 Mbps | 3 Mbps | A lower-bitrate starting point, but still requires a Pi and upload connection that hold steady during testing. |
| 1080p30 | 4 Mbps | 5 Mbps | Higher video detail requires more upload capacity and may be a heavier encoding workload for the Pi. |
These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not benchmarks for Raspberry Pi encoding or guarantees of network stability. Leave upload headroom rather than setting the video bitrate equal to the connection’s full measured upload rate. Test representative lofi audio and the actual visual, then inspect dropped frames and stream-health messages in YouTube Studio. YouTube’s full live encoder settings guidance is at YouTube live encoder settings.
Looping audio and visuals
Configure the encoder or playback pipeline to send uninterrupted audio and video rather than relying on a file that reaches its end and stops. Check that the audio loops cleanly, the visual remains present, and the output continues through a full cycle of the playlist. A long test should include the exact files and transitions intended for broadcast; a successful short preview does not establish long-term stability.

OBS and recording-container caveat
If you choose OBS, check the current build’s availability and performance on your exact Pi and OS before depending on it. OBS Project’s format guide, dated March 26, 2023, describes H.264 as its default, broadly compatible codec and explains that MKV is more resilient for interrupted local recordings than MP4/MOV, which require finalization. Those container notes concern local recordings, not YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS ingest protocol, and do not prove that a particular OBS build performs well on a Pi. See OBS recording formats guide.
Test recovery before calling the stream reliable
- Run a private or otherwise controlled test using the planned audio, visual, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate. YouTube recommends testing with similar sound and movement to the intended stream.
- Watch YouTube Studio’s stream health and messages while also checking the Pi’s CPU load, thermal behavior, network stability, dropped frames, and audio continuity.
- Test ordinary failure cases deliberately: restart the encoder process, reboot the Pi, and briefly interrupt the network if it is safe to do so. Confirm which failures recover automatically and which require you to intervene.
- Check local logs after each test. Make sure they help distinguish an encoder crash from a live process that has lost its connection, without revealing the stream key.
- Repeat the test over a longer period before scheduling a public continuous broadcast. No documentation cited here validates any Pi-and-encoder combination for uninterrupted 24/7 operation.
Copyright, reused content, and replay limits
Use music and visuals you own or have explicit permission to broadcast and monetize. Attribution alone does not establish permission. YouTube says an active live stream removed for copyright can give the channel a copyright strike and a seven-day live-stream restriction; three active copyright strikes can make a channel subject to termination. Review YouTube’s copyright strikes guidance before going live.

Plan separately for replay availability. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that statement does not establish that a stream lasting 12 hours or more will be archived. If an archived replay matters, arrange a suitable recording workflow and verify the result rather than assuming one unbroken broadcast will produce a complete VOD. YouTube’s setup page also describes its monetization flow and stream setup at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

| Symptom | Likely area to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube receives no video | Stream URL, stream key, encoder destination, or live-stream activation | Verify the server URL and key in YouTube Studio and the encoder, check whether first-time activation is complete, and review Live Control Room messages. |
| Stream health warns of connection or dropped-frame problems | Upload stability, bitrate, or Pi workload | Check the actual upload connection and Pi load; try a lower-resolution or lower-bitrate test, then monitor the same health indicators again. |
| Video continues but audio is missing or breaks | Audio source, loop configuration, codec, or sample rate | Confirm the selected audio source is active, set stereo 44.1 kHz and a supported AAC or MP3 output, and test the full loop for gaps. |
| Encoder stops after a process failure | Boot startup or restart handling | Check logs and configure automatic boot start plus a process supervisor or restart policy; verify recovery with a controlled process restart. |
| Pi reboots or becomes unstable under load | Power supply, workload, or thermal behavior | Use a supply appropriate to the model, inspect the board’s behavior during the actual workload, and test a lighter output. The official power recommendation does not guarantee stream stability. |
| Stream ends after media finishes | Playback or playlist loop settings | Check that repeat/playlist playback is enabled and run a complete-cycle test before broadcasting. |
