You can keep a prerecorded mantra presentation live on YouTube from an Indian VPS by running FFmpeg as an encoder, sending its output to YouTube’s ingest server, and using a process manager such as systemd to restart FFmpeg if it exits. This is a do-it-yourself setup, not an uptime guarantee: the VPS, network path, media file, and YouTube ingest must all remain available. YouTube recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval for encoder streams. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance also says first-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. If this is the first time the channel will stream, allow up to 24 hours for activation, as YouTube Help explains.
- An Indian VPS running an operating system that can run FFmpeg and systemd. The VPS must have enough sustained outbound network capacity for the stream and enough storage for your media and logs.
- A local video or audio-visual file that you have the right to broadcast, plus FFmpeg installed on the VPS.
- A YouTube stream’s server URL and stream key. Treat the key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to your stream.
The available evidence does not establish a current cheapest Indian VPS plan or verify any provider’s sustained-transfer allowance. Before buying, check the provider’s current terms for region, CPU limits, outbound transfer or bandwidth caps, storage, overage charges, and whether continuous streaming is allowed. The VPS price alone is not the full cost of an always-on outbound feed.
Choose stream settings that YouTube supports
YouTube’s encoder settings documentation recommends RTMPS, CBR, and a two-second keyframe interval, with four seconds as the maximum. It lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, and frame rates up to 60 fps. For a straightforward FFmpeg setup, H.264 with AAC is a broadly practical starting point; use RTMPS if YouTube provides an RTMPS ingest URL.
| Output | YouTube H.264 bitrate guidance | Practical note |
|---|---|---|
| 480p at 30 fps | 4 Mbps minimum; 4 Mbps recommended | Lower bandwidth demand, but test text and visual detail on your actual presentation. |
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps minimum; 8 Mbps recommended | Use the recommended target as a conservative starting point and verify stream health. |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps minimum; 14 Mbps recommended | Requires more sustained outbound capacity from the VPS. |
These figures are YouTube’s H.264 entries; its table has separate values for other codecs. Do not assume a nearly static mantra image makes a bitrate below YouTube’s guidance suitable. Test with representative audio and movement, then monitor YouTube’s stream-health indicator before relying on the setup.

Configure YouTube Studio and protect the stream key
- Open YouTube Studio and create or select the live stream you intend to use.
- Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream. Keep the key private and do not place it in a public script, screenshot, or repository.
- On the VPS, store the URL and key in a restricted environment file or equivalent secret store rather than embedding them in a command that may be visible to other users or logs.
- Confirm the VPS has the media file and that FFmpeg can read it. Keep the original source file available for recovery and review.
Run a looping FFmpeg stream
The following is a pattern, not a provider-specific installation guide. Install FFmpeg using the package source supported by your VPS operating system, then confirm the installed build includes the needed H.264 and AAC encoders. The example assumes a video file named mantra.mp4 and environment variables named YOUTUBE_RTMPS_URL and YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY. Replace those values with the actual path and private credentials; do not paste a real key into a public page or shared terminal recording.
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i /srv/mantra/mantra.mp4
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 4000k -maxrate 4000k -bufsize 8000k
-r 30 -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0 -pix_fmt yuv420p
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
-f flv "${YOUTUBE_RTMPS_URL}/${YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY}"
This illustrative command targets 480p-class H.264 video at the 4 Mbps figure in YouTube’s table, 30 fps, and a two-second GOP at 30 fps. It does not scale the source: add an explicit scale filter only if you have decided on a target resolution and checked that the resulting output is appropriate. The input must contain an audio stream for the audio options to work; if it does not, provide a suitable authorized audio track or adjust the command for the intended output. Confirm that the RTMPS URL format supplied by YouTube and the installed FFmpeg build work together before leaving the stream unattended.

Keep FFmpeg running with systemd
A service manager can launch FFmpeg at boot and restart it after an unexpected process exit. It cannot restore a failed VPS, repair a broken network route, recreate a missing source file, or make YouTube’s ingest available. Set the service up with restricted credentials and inspect its logs after starting.
- Create a root-readable environment file, for example
/etc/mantra-stream.env, containing the ingest URL and stream key. Restrict access withchmod 600 /etc/mantra-stream.env. - Create a systemd unit such as
/etc/systemd/system/mantra-stream.service. SetExecStartto the FFmpeg command above, using absolute paths and a shell-safe method to load the environment variables; systemd does not automatically interpret shell variable expansion in every unit setting. - Include
Restart=alwaysand a shortRestartSecin the service’s[Service]section, andWantedBy=multi-user.targetin[Install]. Run the service as a dedicated, unprivileged account where practical. - Load and enable the unit with
sudo systemctl daemon-reload,sudo systemctl enable --now mantra-stream.service, then checksudo systemctl status mantra-stream.serviceandsudo journalctl -u mantra-stream.service -f. - Confirm the stream appears in YouTube Studio, check its health, and listen to the audio. Test a controlled FFmpeg restart and VPS reboot before treating the arrangement as unattended.
Plan for long-running sessions and archives
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived in its live-streaming guidance. Its documentation does not establish that a single indefinitely running session will remain one complete archive. If you need recorded sessions, plan how to end and restart streams and how to retain source media independently; do not rely on one endless broadcast as the only copy.

Check rights and monetization suitability
Before broadcasting, verify that you have rights to each mantra recording, visual, and other asset. Permission to use a recording is not by itself a guarantee of monetization eligibility. YouTube’s channel monetization policies apply to live streams and distinguish copyright enforcement from reused-content eligibility. On 15 July 2025, YouTube clarified that repetitive or mass-produced content falls under its “inauthentic content” policy; highly repetitive material with little variation or added value can be ineligible for monetization. Those rules do not establish the rights status or monetization outcome for any particular mantra stream.
Troubleshoot common failures
FFmpeg exits immediately
- Check
journalctlfor a missing file, unsupported codec, permissions problem, invalid option, or encoder unavailable in the installed FFmpeg build. - Run the command interactively with a test stream before enabling unattended service operation.
- Verify that the environment file is readable by the service account and that the unit loads it correctly.
YouTube shows no incoming stream
- Check that the stream key and server URL match the selected YouTube Studio stream, and that the key has not been reset.
- Confirm outbound connectivity from the VPS to the RTMPS endpoint and ensure the URL has not been malformed when credentials are combined.
- Inspect FFmpeg output for connection or authentication errors; protect logs if they may reveal sensitive values.
Stream health warns about bitrate or dropped frames
- Check actual outgoing bitrate and VPS network stability, not only the provider’s advertised port speed.
- Compare the output resolution, frame rate, and codec with YouTube’s current guidance; reduce the chosen output burden if the VPS cannot sustain it.
- Watch the stream health indicator during representative audio and motion tests.
The process restarts but the channel remains offline
systemd only restarts the local process. Determine whether the VPS itself is reachable, the source file still exists, outbound networking works, and YouTube is accepting the ingest. A process supervisor cannot recover failures outside the process it supervises.

The stream runs but the archive is incomplete or absent
Do not assume an uninterrupted session beyond YouTube’s stated under-12-hour auto-archive boundary will be retained as one recording. Use a session plan and preserve the original media separately if an archive matters.

Do not choose a VPS solely by its monthly instance price. An always-on stream sends continuous outbound video, so data-transfer rules and overages can outweigh a low headline rate. Compare current provider terms directly, since no current India VPS price or allowance is established here.
