End and restart the live stream before it reaches 12 hours. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. Treat each session as its own potential archive: YouTube’s guidance does not promise that restarting will preserve the same watch URL, chat, or an uninterrupted viewer experience. For extra protection, record locally in OBS at the same time and check that the file remains intact and keeps growing.
Why one 24/7 stream can become an archive problem
YouTube’s automatic archive guidance is not a guarantee for an always-on broadcast: streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream that exceeds 12 hours may not be captured. The threshold is about whether the live session is captured as an archive; it is not a promise that every shorter stream will be saved exactly as expected. See YouTube’s archive guidance.
The practical fix is to divide the broadcast into shorter live sessions. End the current session, then start a new one for the next segment. This can produce separate archives rather than one oversized video. Do not assume YouTube will combine the sessions into one video or retain the same watch page, chat, or continuous viewer experience.
Choose an endpoint with time to spare
Schedule each session to end comfortably before it reaches 12 hours. A margin is useful because the 12-hour figure is YouTube’s stated archive threshold, not a recommended target for a session that might run long. Build in enough time to announce the transition, end the live session, and prepare the next one.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
If you need a continuous audience experience, explain the handoff in advance and direct viewers to the next session when it is ready. YouTube’s encoder instructions explain how to end a stream and where to find prior, current, and upcoming streams in the Live tab, but they do not establish that successive sessions share a URL. See Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
Set up a local recording as a separate backup
A local recording does not change YouTube’s archive behavior; it gives you an independent copy if the platform archive is missing or incomplete. YouTube recommends recording a local archive as a backup. OBS can record while streaming and lets you choose where recordings are saved. Follow the OBS Standard Recording Output Guide to configure the recording path and options before relying on the setup.

Choose a recording format
OBS recommends MKV when resilience to an ungraceful stop is important, because an interrupted recording is less likely to lose the entire file. MKV may need to be remuxed before some editing software can use it conveniently. Check OBS’s Audio/Video Formats Guide when choosing a container for your workflow.
Allow for storage and system load
Choose a destination with enough free space for the recording quality, bitrate, and how long you plan to keep the files. There is no single storage-capacity figure that fits every stream. OBS also notes that choosing a recording quality other than “Same as stream” uses extra system resources; test the combination of streaming and recording before a long broadcast.

Operate each session and verify both copies
- Set up the live session. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create or select the stream, then connect your encoder with the stream URL and stream key. Check the preview before going live. YouTube’s encoder workflow covers stream setup and ending a broadcast.
- Configure OBS recording before starting. Set a recording destination with adequate capacity, choose a suitable format such as MKV if interruption resilience is the priority, and test the process. Confirm the stream and local recording both start as expected.
- End before the archive threshold. Use a planned endpoint with a margin before 12 hours. The margin is a scheduling precaution; YouTube’s published guidance is that streams under 12 hours can be archived and longer ones may not be captured.
- Monitor the live stream and the recording. Check that the broadcast remains accessible and its audio and video are behaving as intended. Confirm the local file is intact and its size is increasing. YouTube recommends checking local archive integrity and file growth in its live streaming tips.
- Tell viewers about the handoff. Before ending, explain that the next segment will be a new live session. Once the next session is ready, share its link as appropriate; do not count on the old URL or chat carrying over.
- End the session and start the next one. End the live stream through the Live Control Room or encoder workflow, then start a separate session for the next segment.
- Check the archives afterward. Review the Live tab in YouTube Studio for the sessions and inspect the local files. Keep the local copy until you have confirmed that the YouTube archive is available and usable.
What DVR does—and does not do
DVR lets viewers pause and rewind during a live stream; it is not the control for making smaller archive videos. YouTube says rewind may be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours, and viewers cannot seek to a point before the stream began. Turning DVR off does not remove the later recording of the whole stream once it becomes available. For details, see Turn on DVR on live streams.
Choose the approach that fits your risk
| Approach | What it addresses | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| End and restart before 12 hours | Keeps each live session within YouTube’s stated automatic-archive guidance. | Requires transitions, and the new session may have a different watch page and chat. |
| Record locally while streaming | Creates a separate copy you can recover if the YouTube archive is unavailable. | Uses local storage and system resources; recording quality settings other than “Same as stream” use extra resources in OBS. |
| Use both | Combines shorter sessions with an independent local backup. | Requires monitoring the live broadcast and recording destination. |
An external drive can be one possible recording destination, but choose capacity based on the actual bitrate, quality, and retention period rather than a universal estimate.
