Looping cannot play files that are not there. If your 24/7 YouTube stream runs out of usable media, switch to a fallback scene that does not rely on the empty folder—such as a simple background and a clear message—while you prepare authorized replacement content. Then verify YouTube is still receiving your encoder feed before restoring the playlist.
What to do when the playlist runs out
- Switch to a scene independent of the missing files. In OBS, create a scene with a background and a short text message, for example, “Programming is temporarily unavailable; please check back.” Use text and other elements that do not depend on the empty media directory. This is a practical workaround using OBS scene sources, not an automatic OBS recovery feature.
- Use an audio fallback only if you have one ready. If silence is unsuitable, arrange a separately stored audio track that you are authorized to broadcast. Do not assume there is playable audio in an empty video folder.
- Restore the playlist with usable, authorized media. Add files you own or have permission to broadcast. Before putting them back on air, check that they play, have the intended audio, and do not contain damaged frames or long unintended black sections.
- Check the encoder feed in YouTube Live Control Room. Confirm that YouTube is receiving the stream and inspect stream health after switching scenes or changing the playlist. YouTube’s Manage live stream settings page explains the stream URL, key, and related settings.
Why looping does not fix an empty source folder
OBS can repeat an existing file or playlist; its loop controls do not supply replacement media. The OBS Project documentation describes the Media Source’s single-file Loop option and the VLC Video Source’s playlist loop setting. Those options help only when the source file or playlist items exist and can be read. See OBS Media Sources.
For a game stream, a static outage slate may be preferable to a frozen game frame or an unexplained black screen. Keep the message brief and legible, and avoid suggesting that gameplay is continuing if it is not.
Protect and verify the YouTube connection
The stream key connects your encoder to the YouTube destination; it does not contain or replace your video files. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Treat yours as a secret. If you think it has been exposed, reset it in YouTube Live Control Room and update the encoder with the new key.

When no feed appears in Live Control Room, verify that OBS is using the intended stream key and destination, then check whether the encoder is actually outputting. YouTube’s live settings also include auto-start and auto-stop controls, so check the event configuration before stopping or restarting a broadcast.
Choose the right continuity option

Cloud delivery changes where prepared media is streamed from; it does not create content for an empty library. A provider’s service description is not independent evidence of uninterrupted availability. Invalid keys, source-file problems, and service outages can still interrupt a stream.
