How to Keep a Church’s Prerecorded YouTube Stream Online While OBS Is Minimized

OBS can keep sending a prerecorded video to YouTube while minimized, but minimization does not prevent power, network, computer, app, or YouTube interruptions. Set up looping, test the preview, and monitor the stream.

You can minimize OBS to the system tray while it continues sending a prerecorded video to YouTube. Minimizing hides the interface; it does not make the stream more reliable or prevent a computer from sleeping, losing power or internet, or OBS or YouTube from disconnecting. Set up and test looping, confirm the YouTube preview, then monitor the stream throughout the service.

Set up the YouTube stream and OBS

  1. Create or select the event in YouTube Studio. For a scheduled encoder stream, copy its stream URL and stream key into OBS. Treat the key like a password: YouTube says it identifies where the encoder sends its feed and allows YouTube to accept it. Do not share it or show it in screenshots. See YouTube’s live-stream settings instructions.
  2. Add the prerecorded content to the active OBS scene. For one file, add a Media Source and enable Loop. For a playlist, use VLC Video and enable Loop Playlist. Keep the source visible in the active scene. OBS documents VLC Video visibility behavior; the listed default is “Stop when not visible, restart when visible,” which can interrupt playback if the source is hidden. See OBS Media Sources.
  3. Test playback before the service. Check picture and audio, including the transition from the end of the video back to its beginning or the next playlist item. Confirm the correct scene is active and the content source remains visible.
  4. Start the encoder early and check YouTube’s preview. YouTube recommends setting up the encoder at least two hours ahead and starting it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled event. In Live Control Room, check the preview before selecting Go live for a scheduled stream. Follow the current YouTube encoder setup instructions.
  5. Minimize OBS only after confirming the stream is active. OBS’s documented launch parameters include --minimize-to-tray (start minimized to the system tray) and --startstreaming (automatically start streaming). If automating launch, test the parameters before relying on them for a service. See OBS Launch Parameters.

Keep the stream running and monitor it

OBS is the encoder sending the video; a minimized window can keep streaming, but the window state does not control the computer’s power, internet connection, OBS process, or YouTube’s ingest. Separately check that the computer will not sleep or shut down during the service, and that its power and network connection are dependable. YouTube’s documentation does not say that minimizing OBS protects against interruptions to any of these.

  • Keep an eye on Live Control Room’s stream health and the public watch page. YouTube recommends continuously monitoring audio and video, and testing the stream on its watch page and mobile devices. Its live-streaming tips also cover monitoring and preparation.
  • If you have a backup encoder, test failover rather than assuming it will work. YouTube recommends testing the backup setup.
  • For an encrypted connection to YouTube’s ingest, consult YouTube’s RTMPS ingest guide and confirm the settings supported by your encoder.

End the event deliberately

When the service is over, use YouTube’s End Stream control and stop sending content from OBS, following the scheduled-stream instructions in YouTube’s guide to streaming with an encoder. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume the same archive outcome for a stream lasting 12 hours or longer.

Common problems and fixes

  • The stream is not receiving video: Confirm OBS is streaming to the selected event with that event’s stream URL and key, and check whether Live Control Room shows an incoming preview. Keep the key private while correcting or replacing it.
  • The video stops or does not loop: Check that Media Source’s Loop or VLC Video’s Loop Playlist is enabled. For VLC Video, verify the source is visible in the active scene and review its visibility behavior.
  • OBS is minimized, but the stream stops: Minimization is not a keep-alive or recovery feature. Check whether the computer slept, lost power or internet, OBS exited, or YouTube disconnected; then restore the relevant connection or relaunch and verify the preview before resuming.
  • There is picture but no sound, or the loop transition is wrong: Check the OBS audio meters and the file or playlist playback locally, then verify audio on YouTube’s preview or watch page before the service.
  • The scheduled event is not live to viewers: Check the preview and stream health in Live Control Room and select Go live when ready. Starting the encoder and making a scheduled stream live are distinct actions in YouTube’s workflow.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you want the church’s prerecorded YouTube stream to continue without leaving a computer running at home, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos or playlists from the cloud. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo streams to YouTube; it does not stream from a camera.
