If it includes electronic components, keep liquids away and follow the component’s specific care instructions. LEGO says a SMART Brick can be dusted with a brush or cloth, but must not be cleaned with water, detergent or soap.
Choose a dry tool for routine dusting
Start with the model stable on its base or display surface. Use a clean, soft brush or cloth, applying only enough pressure to lift dust. A brush can reach between small details; a cloth offers a broad, direct wipe. These are practical selection considerations, not performance differences measured by LEGO.
Move slowly around protruding pieces so the tool does not catch on them or shift the build. Avoid spraying the display: assembled models can combine ordinary bricks with electronic or delicate elements, and a liquid suitable for loose pieces is not automatically suitable for the whole display.
Protect LEGO electronics and SMART Bricks
LEGO’s support guidance says: “You can clean the SMART Brick and dust it with a brush or cloth. Don’t use water, detergents or soap, as this can damage the brick.” LEGO’s SMART Brick cleaning guidance presents this as care advice for that component.

For other electronic or intelligent components, do not spray or immerse them. LEGO Education advises disconnecting sensors and motors from both the hardware and any power source before cleaning, then wiping gently. Keep liquids away from electronics and use the instructions provided for the particular component.
When a deeper wash is appropriate
LEGO’s instructions for ordinary loose elements are different from its SMART Brick guidance. If you are cleaning loose, non-electronic pieces, LEGO recommends hand-cleaning them with a soft cloth or sponge in water no hotter than 104°F (40°C). Its general guidance allows mild detergent for ordinary pieces; for sensitive or electronic pieces, LEGO advises a cloth moistened with water and mild detergent without perfume or oil. These instructions are not permission to spray, soak or wash an assembled electronic display.

Do not use a dishwasher or washing machine. LEGO also warns against drying pieces in an oven, microwave or with a hair dryer, and against direct sunlight while drying. Excessive heat can deform bricks. The 104°F (40°C) figure is LEGO’s care limit, not a universal tested damage threshold for every component.

LEGO Education warns that disinfectants, including alcohol- or bleach-based products, can damage decorations, make transparent elements hazy, and cause cracks or crazing. Do not assume a household disinfectant is safe for a LEGO display. For a classroom or other setting where disinfection is required, follow applicable local guidance and the instructions for the specific elements rather than applying disinfectant indiscriminately.
