How to Keep a Podcast Stream Running on YouTube After an OBS Update

An OBS update can coincide with blocked files, but stream disconnections and viewer buffering need different checks. Follow the right troubleshooting path for each symptom.

If OBS stopped working right after an update, first check whether security software blocked the updated OBS files; OBS says updates should normally preserve settings. If OBS still runs but the stream drops frames or disconnects, troubleshoot the connection and bitrate instead. Viewer buffering is a third, separate problem.

First identify what stopped working

“OBS is not working” can mean several different things. The timing and OBS’s dropped-frames indicator help choose the right fix; an update alone does not establish that your stream key or YouTube event is at fault.

What you see What to investigate first
OBS will not open, or functions stopped after updating Security software or another system-level issue affecting the update or OBS files. OBS says updates should leave settings intact, though something on the system may interfere (OBS Project Help Portal, FAQ).
OBS runs, but its dropped-frames count rises or the stream disconnects The connection to the remote ingest server may be unstable or unable to sustain the configured bitrate. OBS says this is typically outside OBS Studio’s control (OBS Project, Stream Connection Troubleshooting, 2024-09-30).
OBS reports no dropped frames, but viewers report buffering Viewer-side conditions can vary by location, device, and internet connection. Use the separate buffering checks below.

If OBS stopped working after an update

The OBS Project Help Portal says: “OBS updates should leave your settings intact, but it’s possible that something else on your system may have interfered with the update process.” It advises checking whether security software is scrutinizing OBS and whether the OBS folder is allowlisted. Some security products treat an updated executable as a new program, so its files may need to be removed from and re-added to the allowlist (OBS Project Help Portal, FAQ; accessed 2026-10-03).

  1. Open your security software and check its alerts, quarantine, or application allowlist for OBS.
  2. If OBS or one of its executables was blocked, follow the security product’s instructions to allow the OBS folder. If the product no longer recognizes an executable after the update, remove and re-add that executable to the allowlist.
  3. Test OBS again. If you temporarily disable a security feature to diagnose the problem, turn protection back on and create an appropriate exception if the test confirms it was responsible.
  4. If OBS opens but settings need review, use Tools → Auto Configuration Wizard. OBS says the wizard can get most basic settings correct (OBS Project Help Portal, FAQ; accessed 2026-10-03).

OBS is free, open-source software distributed under GPLv2; the OBS FAQ describes it as having no watermarks or usage limitations (OBS Project Help Portal, FAQ; accessed 2026-10-03).

If OBS runs but the stream drops frames or disconnects

OBS does not provide streaming servers: your computer connects directly to the streaming service, such as YouTube. Dropped frames point to an unstable connection to the remote ingest server or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain; they do not by themselves prove OBS is defective (OBS Project Help Portal, FAQ; accessed 2026-10-03; OBS Project, Stream Connection Troubleshooting, 2024-09-30).

  1. Check the service or server. In Settings → Stream, try another server if one is available. You can try a different service only as a diagnostic to see whether the problem is specific to the service; it is not a permanent fix for a YouTube broadcast.
  2. Reduce bitrate to match stable upload capacity. In Settings → Output, lower the video bitrate and test again. OBS suggests starting at 75% of total upload speed. This is a starting recommendation in its troubleshooting guide, not a guarantee; leave room for upload variation and other network use (OBS Project, 2024-09-30).
  3. Review network options. In Settings → Advanced → Network, check network optimizations and TCP pacing (Windows only), and leave Bind to IP set to Default. You can test IPv4 Only; if it makes no difference, return to the default IPv4 and IPv6 setting. Dynamic bitrate is a beta option that may lower bitrate during congestion, but it does not resolve the underlying connection problem and can reduce stream quality (OBS Project, 2024-09-30).
  4. Check software interference. VPNs, firewalls, antivirus, and network “optimization” tools can interfere with connections. If testing suspected security software temporarily confirms it is the cause, re-enable protection and add an OBS exception rather than leaving protection off.
  5. Test the connection and equipment you already have. If you are on Wi-Fi, test with a wired connection to the router. Restart the modem and router for general connectivity trouble. Possible faulty components include a router, modem, cable, network card, switch, or extender; OBS recommends contacting your internet provider before replacing hardware if you are unsure. Buy an Ethernet cable only if you lack a suitable one or have identified a cable fault.
  6. Contact your internet provider if the steps do not resolve it. Persistent disconnections may require the provider to investigate the connection.

Change one setting at a time and note whether the dropped-frames count or disconnect behavior changes. A test that makes no difference is a reason to restore the original setting, not evidence that a different component is broken.

If viewers report buffering but OBS shows no dropped frames

Viewer buffering is not the same as OBS dropping frames. OBS’s buffering guide notes that the issue can vary across viewers’ locations, devices, and internet connections, even when OBS is not reporting dropped frames. Stay within the platform’s recommendations and consider lowering bitrate or resolution if that better serves your intended audience (OBS Project, Stream Buffering Troubleshooting, 2021-06-09).

  • Ask whether the problem affects one viewer or multiple viewers in different locations.
  • If OBS is not dropping frames, do not assume a local OBS connection fault; assess whether your chosen stream quality is appropriate for the audience.
  • Lower bitrate or resolution only if it improves accessibility for the intended viewers, then observe whether reports change.

If OBS connects but YouTube does not show the podcast live

The OBS-side connection guidance does not establish whether a particular YouTube event, stream key, account state, or control-room setting is correct. Check that the intended event is active and consult YouTube’s current live control room instructions. An OBS update by itself is not evidence of a stream-key failure.
