You can use FFmpeg on a Linux host to send a prerecorded church service to YouTube Live, then use a systemd service to restart FFmpeg after qualifying process failures. That can recover an encoder process; it does not confirm that YouTube resumed the broadcast or that viewers can see and hear it. You still need to check YouTube’s preview and stream health, and monitor the event.
What you need before setting up the service
- A YouTube channel with live streaming available, and a broadcast selected or scheduled in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains how to create a stream and retrieve its connection details.
- A Linux host running
systemd, with FFmpeg installed and an FFmpeg build that supports the output protocol and codecs you intend to use. - A prerecorded file that the service account can read, plus enough sustained upload capacity for the chosen stream settings.
- A private place to store the stream key and someone available to check YouTube’s preview, stream health, and the viewer-facing event.
The exact command depends on the file’s format, your installed FFmpeg build, systemd version, YouTube’s stream configuration, and your connection. The examples below are structural guidance, not a tested drop-in configuration.
Prepare the YouTube broadcast and secure connection
- In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the broadcast. If it is scheduled, prepare it ahead of the service.
- Open the stream settings and retrieve the stream URL and stream key. Select the RTMPS URL rather than assuming the default RTMP URL is the one you want. YouTube’s RTMPS instructions describe supplying the secure URL and key to your encoder; its troubleshooting guidance calls out port 443.
- Keep the key private. Do not put it in a publicly readable unit file, shell history, logs, or a public support post. The systemd execution manual warns that environment variables are not suitable for secrets and documents credential directives such as
LoadCredential=,LoadCredentialEncrypted=, andSetCredentialEncrypted=. Check your installed systemd release before choosing a directive; availability varies by version.
FFmpeg describes RTMPS as RTMP over a secure SSL connection. Use the URL YouTube gives you, not a copied or guessed endpoint.
Choose encoder settings for the source and connection
YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingestion; H.264, H.265, or AV1 video options; AAC or MP3 audio; frame rates up to 60 fps; constant bitrate (CBR); and a recommended two-second keyframe interval, no longer than four seconds. Its settings page gives bitrate recommendations by resolution and frame rate, so select a value from that guidance that matches your output rather than guessing.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Match output to the source. Do not upscale a low-resolution recording just to select a larger output setting. Consider the source’s resolution, frame rate, and audio format before deciding whether to copy streams or encode them.
- Allow for upload headroom. Your connection must sustain the selected stream bitrate. YouTube advises choosing settings appropriate to available bandwidth and testing with representative motion and audio.
- Use the recommended keyframe interval. Set a two-second interval where your encoder options allow it, and do not exceed four seconds.
- Test the actual file. A static title card can conceal problems that appear in moving video or audio. Test a representative section and monitor YouTube’s stream health.
There is no single bitrate or resolution that is correct for every church recording and upload connection. Use YouTube’s current settings table for the target output and verify the chosen settings in a pre-event test.
Build and test the FFmpeg command first
Run FFmpeg manually before adding it to systemd. This confirms that the installed executable can read the file and that the selected output settings and secure YouTube endpoint work in your environment. A generic command shape is:

/usr/bin/ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i /srv/stream/service.mp4 -f flv "[YouTube RTMPS URL and stream key]"
Replace the bracketed sections with options appropriate to the file and YouTube’s settings. -re reads a file at its native rate rather than sending it as fast as possible; -stream_loop -1 requests repeated playback. Confirm the behavior with your FFmpeg build and input. The RTMPS output URL/key syntax should follow the values and configuration YouTube provides. Avoid leaving a real key in shell history or exposing it in logs or support material.
While testing, watch FFmpeg’s output for input, encoding, or connection errors. Separately inspect the incoming preview in Live Control Room before going live. A successful local process start is not proof of a healthy YouTube broadcast.

Create a systemd service that supervises FFmpeg
Keep FFmpeg in the foreground so systemd supervises the encoder process itself. Put the executable path, media access, and credential handling in place for your host; do not copy placeholders literally. This unit illustrates the service shape, but its ExecStart= must be replaced with a command or wrapper suited to your setup.
[Unit]
Description=Prerecorded church service YouTube encoder
Wants=network-online.target
After=network-online.target
[Service]
Type=simple
User=stream
WorkingDirectory=/srv/stream
ExecStart=/usr/bin/ffmpeg [input and encoding options] [RTMPS output]
Restart=on-failure
RestartSec=10
[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target
Restart=on-failure is the recommended policy for many long-running services, while RestartSec=10 inserts a delay between eligible restarts. The exact restart behavior is documented in systemd.service(5). Repeated failures are subject to systemd start-rate limits, so the service may stop trying until the underlying cause is fixed. The network ordering target does not establish that a route to YouTube is available or that YouTube’s endpoint is healthy.

Use the credential mechanisms supported by your installed systemd version and a command or wrapper that can read the protected credential. Do not treat a world-readable unit file or environment variable as a safe place for the stream key. Confirm what your chosen implementation exposes in process arguments and diagnostic output.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Enable, start, and inspect the service
- Save the unit under
/etc/systemd/system/with a descriptive name such aschurch-youtube.service. Ensure thestreamaccount exists, can read the recording, and can access any credential your setup uses. - Reload unit definitions and enable the service for the intended boot model:
sudo systemctl daemon-reload, thensudo systemctl enable --now church-youtube.service. Enabling it for boot means it may start again on host reboot; decide whether that is appropriate for your event schedule. - Inspect process status with
sudo systemctl status church-youtube.serviceand recent service logs withsudo journalctl -u church-youtube.service -n 100 --no-pager. Look for FFmpeg input errors, authentication or connection failures, and repeated restarts. - Check the Live Control Room preview and stream health, then confirm that the event is accessible from the channel or watch page and on relevant viewer devices.
A green or active systemd state means the service process is running; it does not prove the broadcast is reaching YouTube correctly or that viewers can hear and see it. YouTube’s live streaming tips recommend advance setup, a pre-event start, preview checks, and ongoing stream-quality monitoring.

End the broadcast deliberately
Follow YouTube’s event wrap-up workflow to end the live broadcast, then stop the encoder service when the event has finished. You can stop the unit with sudo systemctl stop church-youtube.service. Avoid using Restart=always casually for a finite recording: a clean FFmpeg exit and an intentional service stop have different implications under restart policies, and automatically restarting after a clean end can start another stream unexpectedly.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely area to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The service fails immediately. | Executable path, unit syntax, file permissions, or FFmpeg options. | Check systemctl status and the unit journal. Verify the FFmpeg path, confirm the service account can read the input and credentials, and run the equivalent command manually without exposing the stream key. |
| FFmpeg cannot connect to YouTube. | Incorrect URL or key, protocol choice, network route, or firewall. | Copy the RTMPS URL and key from the selected Live Control Room stream. Check that the network allows the secure connection and port 443, then retry and inspect both FFmpeg output and YouTube’s stream status. |
| The unit is active but the preview is absent or unhealthy. | The encoder may be running while the stream is not being accepted or delivered correctly. | Check the incoming preview and stream health in Live Control Room. Review FFmpeg logs and verify the endpoint, key, output format, and selected encoder settings; do not use service state alone as confirmation. |
| Video or audio is missing, malformed, or out of sync. | Source compatibility, stream mapping, codec options, or output bitrate/settings. | Inspect the recording’s actual streams and test a representative section. Adjust mapping and encoding to fit the source and YouTube’s current recommendations, then repeat the preview check. |
| The service stops restarting after repeated failures. | systemd start-rate limiting or an unresolved underlying failure. | Read the journal, correct the original fault first, then reset the failed state if necessary with sudo systemctl reset-failed church-youtube.service and start it again. Restart limits are safeguards, not evidence that the broadcast recovered. |
| The broadcast ends when the file finishes. | The input is finite and looping was not configured or did not behave as expected. | Confirm the intended loop behavior in a manual test; use an appropriate loop option for the input and installed FFmpeg build if the service should repeat the recording. Verify the YouTube event remains live during the test. |
Copyright and YouTube policy checks
Before broadcasting a prerecorded service, confirm that the church has the rights needed for every element in the recording, including music, readings, images, and any third-party video. A live encoder does not grant those rights. Review YouTube’s notices or restrictions for the specific event and ensure the broadcast is accessible to the intended audience. Avoid assuming that a recording is safe to rebroadcast merely because it was previously used in a service.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you do not want a Linux host at church or at home to stay on, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded video from the cloud; it does not broadcast a camera feed.
- Nothing at home has to stay on; the stream runs from the cloud.
- Uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot rather than quality-based tiers.
- Automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card; one free day per account.
The monthly option is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for service details, or start the free first day.
