First identify what “sleeping” means: a blank monitor, an FFmpeg job suspended by the shell, and a Pi or stream that has actually stopped are different problems. Turn off the relevant screen blanking setting if only the display goes dark; use FFmpeg’s -nostdin if a background job is suspended while checking terminal input. Neither remedy fixes a failed network connection, YouTube interruption, or system-wide power problem.
Identify what stopped
Before changing settings, check what is still working. If the monitor is blank but the stream continues, address display blanking. If the shell reports that FFmpeg is stopped or suspended, address its interaction with terminal input. If the Pi or stream is unresponsive, these two symptoms do not explain the cause.
| Observed symptom | Relevant remedy | What it affects | Reboot? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Raspberry Pi OS desktop monitor blanks | Turn off Screen Blanking in Control Centre or raspi-config |
Desktop display | No reboot specified by Raspberry Pi documentation |
| Text console monitor blanks | Add consoleblank=0 to /boot/firmware/cmdline.txt |
Kernel console display | Yes |
| Need to switch a Wayland HDMI output off or on | Use wlr-randr |
Display output only | No reboot specified by Raspberry Pi documentation |
| Background FFmpeg job is suspended while checking terminal input | Run FFmpeg with -nostdin or redirect standard input from /dev/null on Linux |
FFmpeg terminal-input handling | No |
If the monitor blanks but FFmpeg keeps streaming
Raspberry Pi OS desktop
Open Raspberry Pi menu → Preferences → Control Centre → Display and switch Screen Blanking off. Alternatively, open a terminal and run sudo raspi-config, then choose 2 Display Options → D2 Screen Blanking and answer No. When desktop blanking is enabled, Raspberry Pi documentation gives 600 seconds (10 minutes) as the default inactivity period.
Text-only terminal
The desktop toggle is not the relevant control for a text console. Edit /boot/firmware/cmdline.txt and append consoleblank=0 to its existing single line. Save the file and reboot. Do not split the file into multiple lines. Raspberry Pi’s documentation states: “Add consoleblank=0 to never blank the screen.”

To inspect the current console blanking parameter, run:
cat /sys/module/kernel/parameters/consoleblank
Wayland HDMI output
If the specific goal is to switch the HDMI display output off or back on in a Wayland session, Raspberry Pi documents these commands for HDMI0:

export WAYLAND_DISPLAY=wayland-1
wlr-randr --output HDMI-A-1 --off
To turn the output back on:
export WAYLAND_DISPLAY=wayland-1
wlr-randr --output HDMI-A-1 --on
This controls the display, not FFmpeg’s continued execution. A screen going dark by itself does not show that the Pi has suspended.
If FFmpeg is suspended as a background job
When FFmpeg is launched in the background from an interactive shell, it can be stopped while checking console input. The FFmpeg project FAQ recommends -nostdin to prevent those input checks when running FFmpeg as a background task.

ffmpeg -nostdin -i INPUT OUTPUT
Replace INPUT and OUTPUT with the arguments for your own command, including your existing streaming settings. This example illustrates the option; it is not a complete YouTube streaming command.
On Linux, redirecting standard input from /dev/null is an alternative when appropriate:

ffmpeg -i INPUT OUTPUT </dev/null
These changes address FFmpeg checking terminal input. They do not repair system suspend, a disconnected network, invalid YouTube stream credentials, or an encoder that cannot keep up.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If neither symptom fits
Do not assume the Pi entered a system-wide sleep state just because a stream stopped. Check whether the process is running, whether the Pi responds locally, whether power and network remain available, and whether YouTube is still receiving the stream. Raspberry Pi’s cited display guidance and FFmpeg’s FAQ establish remedies for screen blanking and terminal-input suspension; they do not identify a universal cause or fix for a stopped device or failed YouTube ingest. Diagnose the evidence for that failure before changing a setting.

Settings that are easy to confuse
hdmi_blanking is not a process keep-alive
Do not treat hdmi_blanking=1 as a universal fix. Raspberry Pi’s legacy configuration reference describes hdmi_blanking as controlling how HDMI responds to an operating-system request for DPMS standby, and says Raspberry Pi 4 does not switch off HDMI output with hdmi_blanking=1. This concerns HDMI standby behavior, not FFmpeg suspension.
VPU sleep mode is a shutdown setting
Raspberry Pi documentation discusses “VPU sleep mode” in its instructions about what happens when a supported Pi is turned off. Do not confuse that shutdown behavior with a screen blanking timeout or use it as the first response to a stopped FFmpeg job.
Check your Raspberry Pi OS release
The menu paths and /boot/firmware/cmdline.txt path above follow current Raspberry Pi documentation. If your installed Raspberry Pi OS release uses different labels or paths, check its documentation before editing configuration files.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a continuously playing YouTube stream rather than troubleshooting a Pi, StreamNeo is a cloud service for looping uploaded videos. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer can be off; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud. It does not stream from a camera or send streams to other platforms.
