To stop a sleep meditation stream from repeating one track, turn off single-track repeat, build a playlist with several distinct sessions, and use shuffle or next-track autoplay if your player supports it. A sleep timer only controls when playback stops; it does not prevent tracks from recurring before then. First check whether the player is looping one track, repeating a short playlist, or continuing a small queue.
Identify what is repeating
- One track repeats immediately: the player is likely set to repeat the current track. Turn that off or switch to playlist repeat.
- A group of tracks repeats: playlist repeat is enabled, or the playlist is too short to provide the variety you want. Add distinct sessions and remove duplicate entries.
- The same track returns after several others: the queue may be small, or the player may be repeating the playlist. Add more variety; no documented control guarantees a particular interval before a track returns.
For a reliable setup across services, use a finite playlist of distinct meditations or ambient tracks, then enable shuffle or automatic advancement. Check the repeat control as well as the playlist contents: shuffle does not necessarily turn repeat off.
Fix repeat and shuffle in YouTube Music
The documented instructions below are for YouTube Music on a computer. Labels and controls can differ on Android and iPhone, so check the current controls in your app rather than assuming the same taps apply.
- Open the album or playlist you want and choose Shuffle play, or turn on Shuffle while it is playing.
- Inspect the Repeat control. If the repeat icon shows the number 1, the current song is set to repeat. Turn that setting off or change it so the album or playlist, rather than one song, is the repeat target.
- Review the playlist and remove duplicate tracks. Add enough distinct sessions that listening through the queue does not feel like immediate repetition.
YouTube Music also documents Library → Songs → Shuffle all for shuffling a library. Its help guidance notes that when a specific song, video, artist shuffle, or mix is selected, repeat may apply only to the current item; if one track keeps looping, check the playback context as well as the repeat icon.

Set up autoplay and playlists in Calm
Calm’s Help Center, updated April 28, 2026, documents an autoplay choice that either repeats the current song or advances to the next song on the album or playlist. For variety, choose advance-to-next rather than repeat-current-song, and use a playlist with multiple tracks. Calm’s curated Sleep Playlists are described as about 3–5 hours long; that is an approximate duration, not a guarantee about when a particular track will recur.
Calm distinguishes music playlists from guided content. A Scene timer is not the same as a music timer: individual Sleep Stories do not themselves have a sleep timer. If you want ambience to continue after a meditation or story ends, the Play sounds outside the app setting controls how long a background Scene continues. Check that setting if your intended sequence is guided content followed by background sound.

Use Spotify’s timer for stopping, not for variety
Spotify’s newsroom article, originally published August 2, 2022, describes opening Now Playing, choosing Sleep Timer from the music menu, then selecting a duration from 5 minutes through 1 hour or until the end of the track. It also describes a timer for podcasts and checking the remaining time. An update dated August 29, 2025 says Sleep Timer can be controlled from mobile, desktop, and Wear OS and can stop playback on nearly any device, including speakers, TVs, and game consoles.
A timer determines how long playback continues; it does not make a short or repetitive playlist more varied. Pair it with a playlist containing distinct tracks and check the repeat setting if the same meditation keeps returning. Spotify describes the feature as a way to decide how long music or a podcast plays before it automatically stops.

Check BetterSleep’s playback mode before relying on repeat
BetterSleep documents timers for sound mixes and for meditations or SleepTales. For guided content, its Repeat control is available only when Keep music playing is set to a timer duration or Indefinitely.
There are extra restrictions in BetterSleep’s sleep tracker: it does not support external timers or guided-content Repeat, and playlists are not supported there. Sounds paired with a SleepTale or meditation stop when that content ends. If you use tracking, do not assume the ordinary playback controls will behave the same way inside the tracker.

Choose the right combination of controls
| What you want | What to set | What it does not solve |
|---|---|---|
| Stop one meditation looping | Turn off repeat-current-track; use playlist or album playback. | A playlist with only one or two distinct tracks can still feel repetitive. |
| Hear varied tracks without managing playback | Use a playlist with distinct items and enable shuffle or advance-to-next autoplay. | No cited service guarantees a specific recurrence interval. |
| Stop audio after you fall asleep | Set a sleep timer or choose a track-end stop option where available. | A timer does not prevent repetition before playback ends. |
| Use tracking while audio plays | Check the tracker’s own supported playback controls first. | Some tracking modes disable playlists, timers, or guided-content repeat. |

Troubleshoot persistent repetition
- A single item keeps restarting: inspect Repeat for the single-track indicator, then verify you are playing the intended playlist rather than a selected track or mix.
- Shuffle still feels repetitive: remove duplicate entries and add more distinct meditations or sound tracks. Shuffle cannot create variety that is not in the playlist.
- Playback stops sooner than expected: check the sleep timer and whether it is set to stop after a duration or at the end of a track. In Calm, distinguish a music timer from Scene/background-sound settings.
- Controls are missing in tracking mode: check the tracker’s documented limitations; BetterSleep’s tracker does not support playlists, external timers, or guided-content Repeat.
- App steps do not match: controls can vary by device, plan, region, and app release. The YouTube Music directions above are for computer help; confirm current labels in the version you are using.
