To keep a recorded speedrun playing on YouTube Live overnight, send the video file through an encoder connected to a YouTube live stream, and set the encoder or media player to repeat the file. For a one-off broadcast, an existing computer and streaming software can be enough; the computer must stay on and connected. For unattended playback without a computer running at home, a cloud service is another option.

What you need before you start

  • A YouTube channel eligible for live streaming. It must be verified and must not have a live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. First-time live streaming activation can take up to 24 hours. YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance explains the requirements.
  • A finished speedrun recording, plus permission to use all video and audio in the broadcast. Owning the gameplay recording does not automatically clear music or other copyrighted material included in it.
  • An encoder: streaming software on a computer, dedicated hardware, or a cloud service. YouTube explains that an encoder converts video into a digital format for streaming. YouTube’s encoder setup guide describes the workflow.
  • A reliable internet connection with upload capacity sufficient for the selected stream bitrate, and a way to monitor the broadcast.

Set up an overnight stream from a computer

  1. Confirm that live streaming is enabled. Check the channel’s eligibility in YouTube Studio. If this is the channel’s first live stream, enable the feature in advance and allow up to 24 hours for activation.
  2. Create the live stream in YouTube Studio. Open YouTube Studio, select Create > Go live, and choose the encoder workflow. Create a new stream or schedule one. Set the title, audience, visibility, and other broadcast details deliberately; check that the resulting watch page has the privacy setting you intend.
  3. Connect the encoder. Copy the stream URL and stream key from YouTube Studio into the matching fields in your streaming software. Treat the key like a password: do not show or share it. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
  4. Load the recorded run as the video source. Add the file to the encoder’s media source or media player. If you want continuous playback, configure that source or player to repeat the file. Looping controls differ by software and version, so check the current documentation for the encoder you use; YouTube’s encoder instructions do not specify OBS’s local-file looping steps.
  5. Choose settings the connection can sustain. Set the output resolution and bitrate to suit the recording and your available upload bandwidth. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate, using RTMPS, and configuring a constant bitrate (CBR); its encoder guidance recommends a two-second keyframe interval. A high bitrate that exceeds stable upload capacity can cause buffering or a degraded stream, so test at the intended resolution and motion level rather than relying on a setting that works only briefly.
  6. Preview and test before the overnight run. Start the encoder and check the preview in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Confirm that video, game audio, and any intended commentary are present; inspect stream health and correct warnings before going live. YouTube’s guidance covers the encoder connection and preview workflow: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder and stream health and encoder settings.
  7. Go live and keep the computer running. Once the preview is correct, start the broadcast from the encoder or the YouTube control room as prompted. Keep the computer awake, the encoder open, and the network connection active for the full session. Check the public watch page from another device so you know viewers can see the intended stream.

Plan for interruptions and YouTube replays

A local setup depends on the computer and connection

A computer-based encoder can stop sending video if the computer sleeps, loses power, the encoder crashes, or the internet connection drops. YouTube recommends monitoring stream health, but its cited guidance does not promise that a local setup will recover automatically after an interruption. Disable sleep for the planned broadcast period, connect to stable power and networking, and decide who can intervene if the stream stops. If a complete replay matters, consider making a local recording as a backup.

Do not count on a complete archive after 12 hours

YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived. A stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all, so an overnight stream that crosses that threshold is not a dependable way to create a complete YouTube replay. If the archive is important, plan a deliberate stop and restart before 12 hours or keep a separate local recording. YouTube also says DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable for very long streams, including streams longer than 12 hours. See YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance and its DVR guidance.

Choose the setup that fits your overnight run

Setup Best fit Trade-offs
StreamNeo A prerecorded YouTube stream that should keep running from the cloud without a computer left on at home. Requires uploading the video and using a paid slot after the one free day; check the service’s current plan details.
Existing computer with software encoder A one-off overnight broadcast or a creator willing to leave a computer running. Requires setup and a dependable power and network connection; plan for local recording and interruption recovery.
Dedicated hardware encoder Repeated scheduled streams or a workflow where avoiding a computer is valuable. Requires hardware purchase and checking media scheduling, storage, controls, and recovery behavior.
Other hosted services Creators comparing cloud options for continuous prerecorded YouTube streams. Check current features, costs, upload process, reliability, and terms directly; current prices and partner terms are not established here.

YouTube’s encoder options page lists AJA HELO Plus, whose optional PlayToStream functionality can schedule prerecorded media to YouTube Live without a computer, and Gyre as a cloud tool for 24/7 prerecorded streams. It also names Upstream.so as a cloud studio for 24/7 live video, but the cited page does not establish that its prerecorded speedrun workflow is equivalent. These are options, not prerequisites: YouTube says expensive equipment is not needed to get started. See YouTube’s live streaming tools.

Troubleshoot common overnight-stream problems

  • You cannot go live: Check channel verification and whether a live-streaming restriction applies. If live streaming was just enabled for the first time, activation may take up to 24 hours.
  • YouTube Studio shows no incoming video: Confirm that the encoder is running, the correct stream URL and key are entered, and the stream is connected to the intended broadcast. Reset a stream key if you suspect it was exposed.
  • The stream buffers or loses quality: Test the upload connection and lower the bitrate or output resolution to a level it can sustain consistently. Use RTMPS and CBR as YouTube recommends, then check Live Control Room stream health again.
  • The run plays once and stops: Check the media source’s repeat or loop setting in the software’s current documentation. A YouTube stream does not itself make a local video repeat.
  • There is no game audio, or audio is unexpectedly present: Check the media source’s audio routing and the encoder’s audio meters during preview. Confirm that the included music and other audio are cleared for the broadcast.
  • The computer stops streaming while unattended: Check sleep and power settings, network stability, and whether the encoder closed or crashed. A local computer setup requires an interruption plan; monitoring alone does not guarantee automatic recovery.
  • The YouTube replay is missing or incomplete: A broadcast exceeding 12 hours may not be captured. Keep a local recording or stop and restart the stream before it crosses that limit if a YouTube archive is essential.

Copyright and channel-policy checks

Before broadcasting, make sure you have rights to the recording and its soundtrack, overlays, and any other included material. Game footage is not automatically cleared merely because you recorded it yourself. YouTube’s systems or a rights holder may identify protected material, and a live stream can face restrictions. Review the relevant game publisher’s streaming policy and YouTube’s copyright rules before scheduling a long unattended broadcast. Also make the stream’s title, thumbnail, and description accurately identify a prerecorded speedrun; do not imply it is live gameplay captured in real time.
