In OBS Studio, turn on Settings → Advanced → Automatically Reconnect before you go live, and record the gameplay locally at the same time. Reconnect gives OBS a chance to restore transmission when your internet drops; a local recording preserves the gameplay if the live broadcast is interrupted. Neither guarantees a seamless stream, so rehearse a connection loss before relying on either.

Prepare OBS before the gaming stream
Enable automatic reconnect
- Open OBS Studio and select Settings → Advanced.
- Find Automatically Reconnect and enable it. OBS identifies this as a configurable setting in its overview guide, but does not publish a universal retry interval or maximum retry count there. OBS Studio Overview Guide
- Test the behavior in a private or unlisted rehearsal. Do not assume a particular outage length will always reconnect or that YouTube will join every interruption into one seamless replay.
Start a local recording as well
Configure OBS recording and confirm that a file is actually being written to the intended location before the broadcast. Check the destination drive’s free space for the planned session. An external SSD can be a convenient storage destination, but it is not a requirement; the cited guidance does not prescribe a drive size or speed.
Rehearse your actual setup
Test with the same game, encoder, scenes and internet arrangement you intend to use. Verify that viewers can see the stream, OBS is recording locally, and you can locate and play the resulting file. For a useful recovery rehearsal, briefly interrupt the connection in a private or unlisted test and observe what OBS and YouTube actually do.

Reduce the chance of a network drop
OBS explains that dropped frames or intermittent disconnections point to a network problem between your computer and the remote stream ingest server; a connection that cannot sustain the configured bitrate is one possible cause. Its troubleshooting guidance suggests trying another ingest server and lowering video bitrate, among other network checks. OBS Project: Stream Connection Troubleshooting
- If the issue recurs, try another available ingest server and test again.
- Lower the video bitrate and check whether the connection becomes stable under your streaming conditions.
- Investigate the network path between the computer and the internet service, rather than assuming a local recording will fix transmission.
A cellular hotspot or other independent connection may help if the primary internet path fails, but this is a practical inference from OBS’s network-failure guidance, not a guaranteed fix or product endorsement. What to do when the outage happens
- Give OBS’s automatic reconnect a chance to work. The official guidance does not establish how long it retries or guarantee that YouTube will keep the same broadcast available indefinitely. OBS Studio Overview Guide
- If you have rehearsed a genuinely separate backup internet connection, switch to it according to your own tested setup. A hotspot is not useful as a fallback unless it has adequate service and upload capacity at the location.
- Keep the local recording in mind as a separate safeguard. If it is still recording, it can preserve gameplay even if viewers lose the live feed; check that the file is saved after the session.
Check the replay after the broadcast
Review both the YouTube archive and the local file. YouTube Help says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all; YouTube recommends recording a local archive as backup. These are YouTube’s stated operational thresholds, not a guarantee that every shorter stream will be available as expected. YouTube Help: Archive live streams
DVR is not outage recovery
YouTube DVR lets viewers pause, rewind and continue during a live stream. Viewers cannot seek to a point before the stream went live, and DVR may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours.
