A Windows update that restarts your PC will interrupt an encoder-based YouTube stream. To reduce the chance of that happening during a gaming replay, set Windows active hours to cover the stream, schedule any pending restart for a break, or temporarily pause updates. After an update, check the encoder and YouTube Live Control Room; do not assume the broadcast resumed by itself.
Before the stream: keep an update restart out of the way
Windows offers ways to place update restarts at a more convenient time, but none makes a PC-based stream immune to a restart. The exact menu labels can vary by Windows version, so use the controls shown in your installed version.
Set active hours
Open Settings > Windows Update and set active hours to include the hours you expect to stream. Active hours help Windows avoid restarting for updates during that period; they are not a permanent block on updates.
Schedule a pending restart for a break
If Windows Update is already waiting for a restart, use its restart scheduling control to choose a time when the stream is not running. Check Windows Update before starting a long replay broadcast so a pending restart does not catch you by surprise.

Pause updates only as a temporary deferral
If you need more time to finish a planned stream, you can temporarily pause updates in Windows Update. Pausing defers installation and restart; updates resume when the pause expires or you resume them. Set a reminder to install updates after the stream rather than leaving security updates deferred indefinitely.
Prepare YouTube and the encoder
YouTube encoder streaming depends on the encoder connecting to YouTube with the stream URL and stream key. Treat the key like a password: do not publish or share it. In YouTube Studio, confirm that you have selected the intended broadcast and destination. If you reuse stream settings, verify that the selected stream is the right one and whether it is scheduled.

- Open YouTube Studio and select the intended live stream in Live Control Room.
- In the encoder, confirm the YouTube server or stream URL and the matching stream key. Avoid resetting the key unless there is a connection problem or security reason; after a reset, update the encoder with the new key.
- Start the encoder ahead of the scheduled event when appropriate. Check the Live Control Room preview and stream health before relying on the broadcast.
- Test the entire restart path at a convenient time: restart Windows, let the update finish, then verify the encoder opens with the correct scene and source, connects to the intended stream, and produces a valid preview.
The restart test is important because automatic encoder startup is not the same as a confirmed YouTube reconnection. YouTube recommends checking the preview and monitoring stream health; do not rely on an untested startup setup for an unattended replay.
After an update: recover the stream safely
- Let Windows finish installing the update and complete its restart before reopening the encoder.
- Open the encoder and confirm it is sending to the intended YouTube stream with the correct server or URL and key.
- Check the Live Control Room preview and stream health. Then verify the public or unlisted watch page and, if you record locally, confirm that the local archive file is being written.
- If you use OBS autostart, test it with your installed OBS version and current YouTube workflow. An OBS community forum discussion describes using the startup folder or Task Scheduler and an OBS start-streaming option, but also cautions that reconnect may fail if the initial connection does not succeed. This is a community-reported technique, not an official guarantee that OBS will restore a YouTube broadcast unattended.
Scheduled broadcasts, continuous replays, and archives
A scheduled YouTube broadcast and a continuous stream using reused settings are not automatically interchangeable. Confirm in Live Control Room that the encoder is connected to the intended event before starting or restarting it.

YouTube’s encoder guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. For a continuous replay longer than 12 hours, that guidance does not establish that the full stream will be archived, so do not count on a complete archive based on that rule alone.
