If OBS crashes, reopen it and check the broadcast in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room before assuming the same stream can continue. OBS’s automatic reconnect can retry a supported connection drop while OBS is still running; it cannot restart a crashed OBS process. YouTube and OBS do not document a universal grace period or guarantee that restarting OBS will resume the same broadcast.
First, identify what failed
An OBS crash, an encoder connection drop, and an ended YouTube broadcast are different situations. OBS may report that it is streaming even when YouTube is not receiving a usable feed, so check YouTube’s stream health and broadcast state as well as OBS’s status. YouTube advises creators to “monitor the stream health and review messages” during an event (YouTube encoder settings and stream health).

Prepare OBS and the YouTube event before going live
Verify the event and stream key
In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select the scheduled broadcast. In OBS, confirm the YouTube service, server, and stream key are the ones intended for that event. A stream key routes the encoder feed; YouTube documents creating a key and entering it in the encoder, and allows custom keys to be reused (YouTube live stream settings). Restarting OBS alone is not a reason to reset a valid key. Reset it if it is compromised or invalid, then update the encoder.
Enable OBS automatic reconnect
In OBS, open Settings → Advanced → Network and enable automatic reconnect. Set a retry delay and retry count appropriate for your connection and event. OBS documents reconnect as an option for supported outputs; its Output API reference says retry time doubles on each retry to avoid overloading services (OBS Studio 33.0.0 Output API Reference). This is for connection interruptions while OBS remains open, not an application crash.

Decide how YouTube auto-stop should behave
Check the broadcast’s auto-stop setting in Live Control Room. OBS’s YouTube guide says auto-stop disables the possibility of reconnecting later to continue that broadcast (OBS guide to streaming to YouTube). If returning to the same scheduled event matters, test the behavior with auto-stop disabled before relying on it. Disabling auto-stop does not restart OBS or guarantee that YouTube will keep the event available; settings and interface behavior can change.
Test the actual rerun and preserve your setup
- Run a private or otherwise safe test using the same game capture, audio, and scene you plan to use. Check both motion and sound.
- Save the OBS profile and scene collection. Keep copies of essential custom assets and notes about plugins or scripts you need.
- Keep Live Control Room accessible on a phone or second display so you can check YouTube if OBS becomes unavailable.
- Confirm you can reopen OBS and select the intended profile and scene collection.
YouTube recommends testing before the event and checking stream-health messages while live (YouTube encoder settings and stream health).

Recover after OBS crashes
- Record what happened. Note the time and whether OBS disappeared, froze, or remained open with a connection warning. This helps separate a process crash from a network interruption.
- Check YouTube first. In Live Control Room, inspect stream health, preview, and the broadcast’s current state. Do not rely on an OBS “live” indicator as proof that viewers are receiving the feed.
- Reopen OBS. If OBS offers Safe Mode after an improper shutdown, use it for a diagnostic run. OBS’s interface describes Safe Mode as disabling third-party plugins, scripting, and WebSockets (OBS Studio interface strings).
- Verify the output setup. Choose the correct profile and scene collection, then confirm the YouTube service, server, and stream key. Start streaming and watch OBS output status alongside YouTube’s health and preview. Avoid resetting a key without a specific key problem.
- Respond to the event state. If YouTube accepts the feed and the existing event remains available, monitor it to confirm the rerun is back. If the event has ended or will not accept the feed, select or create a new broadcast and tell viewers where to go. The same event is not guaranteed to resume.
- Save diagnostic information. Preserve the OBS crash report and log before changing many settings. OBS’s overview guide asks users seeking support to include a log file (OBS Studio Overview Guide).
Troubleshoot the underlying problem
OBS crashes again after reopening
Try Safe Mode, then investigate plugins, scripts, browser sources, GPU or encoder drivers, and recent updates one at a time. Safe Mode disables plugins and scripts, which can help narrow the cause, but it does not identify the culprit by itself. Preserve logs and crash reports before changing settings.
OBS stays open but drops frames or disconnects
Treat this as a connection or output issue rather than an application crash. OBS lists unstable connectivity or insufficient capacity for the selected bitrate among possible causes, and recommends checking areas such as the ingest server, bitrate, security software, VPN, and network configuration (OBS stream connection troubleshooting).

The stream key or event appears wrong
Recheck the selected YouTube broadcast, service, server, and key in OBS against Live Control Room. A valid reusable key generally does not need replacing just because the application restarted. Reset a key only if it is exposed, invalid, or otherwise known to be the problem, and then update OBS with the replacement.
Could a backup ingest URL solve an OBS crash?
No. YouTube’s HLS documentation describes a backup ingestion URL for compatible encoders, but an alternate endpoint is not proof of automatic failover after OBS terminates or of continued access to the same event (YouTube HLS stream setup).

What to expect from reconnecting
There is no universal YouTube reconnect timer established in the official materials cited here. The outcome depends on the broadcast’s current state and settings, and those should be checked in Live Control Room. OBS automatic reconnect handles supported output interruptions while the program is running; it is not a watchdog for a crashed process. Neither platform documentation cited here guarantees that reopening OBS resumes the same event.
