To recover an OBS-based YouTube Live loop after a Windows update, plan for two separate problems: OBS may stay open but lose its connection, or Windows may restart and close OBS. OBS’s Automatic Reconnect setting can address the first; launching OBS with the --startstreaming parameter after reboot can address the second, if Windows starts OBS successfully. Neither guarantees that the stream will resume: the network, sign-in, OBS, and YouTube settings must all be ready.
What has to recover after an update?
A loop can stop at different points in the path from your video to YouTube. First identify which one failed: Windows must start, OBS must open with the loop source available, OBS must send an encoder feed, and YouTube must accept that feed for the intended live event.
- OBS remains open, but the connection drops: OBS Automatic Reconnect is relevant.
- Windows restarts and closes OBS: a reconnect setting alone is not enough; OBS must be launched again and instructed to start streaming.
- OBS opens but YouTube receives no feed: check OBS status, network readiness, and YouTube’s stream URL and key before changing unrelated Windows settings.
The steps below are an OBS example, not universal instructions for every encoder or Windows configuration. The Windows edition, sign-in setup, and source of the loop can vary.
Prepare YouTube and OBS before changing startup behavior
1. Record the working loop setup
Note which encoder you use, which OBS scene or source supplies the loop, and whether the YouTube event is scheduled or intended to remain continuously open. Keep your stream key private; do not include it in screenshots, notes shared with others, or support requests.

2. Confirm the YouTube encoder settings
In YouTube Live Control Room, check the stream URL and key, then confirm that the encoder uses the current values. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address”: the key tells the encoder where to send the feed and lets YouTube accept it. See YouTube Help’s Manage live stream settings.
Review the event’s auto-start and auto-stop choices in Live Control Room. These settings affect how encoder output starts and ends the YouTube event; do not assume a reboot will behave as intended without checking them. YouTube notes that copying or reusing stream settings can carry these choices forward. The encoder workflow and event setup are described in Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Set up the two OBS recovery layers
3. Enable Automatic Reconnect for connection drops
In OBS, open Settings > Advanced and find Automatic Reconnect. This setting is for a connection interruption while OBS is still running; it does not itself reopen OBS after Windows has restarted. OBS identifies Automatic Reconnect in its OBS Studio Overview Guide.
4. Arrange to start OBS after Windows restarts
OBS lists --startstreaming as a launch parameter. It tells OBS to start streaming when OBS is launched, but does not configure Windows to launch OBS or ensure that the PC is signed in and online.

If you use a scheduled task or another automated launch, OBS says to set the working directory—Windows labels this field Start in—to the folder containing obs64.exe. Without the correct working directory, an automated launch may not behave as expected. Follow OBS’s Launch Parameters guidance, published May 30, 2021.
Choose a Windows startup method that suits your own sign-in and security configuration. The OBS launch parameter does not bypass a sign-in prompt, make the network available, or guarantee that a scheduled task can run in your configuration. Windows editions and account setups differ, so test the actual path rather than assuming a generic startup recipe will work.

Test the full restart before relying on it
- Use a test event. If appropriate, choose an unlisted or private stream so you can check the recovery flow without treating it as a public broadcast.
- Verify normal streaming first. Confirm that the loop plays in OBS and that YouTube receives the encoder feed. YouTube recommends previewing before going live and monitoring stream health; see its stream health guidance.
- Perform a controlled restart while present. Let the PC restart, then check that Windows reaches the expected state and that the startup method actually opens OBS.
- Check the loop and encoder. Confirm the intended OBS source is playing and OBS shows that it is sending the stream.
- Check YouTube Live Control Room. Look for the incoming preview or feed and review stream health. Confirm that the event’s auto-start and auto-stop behavior matches what you expect.
- Repeat if needed. A single successful test does not establish that every later restart, sign-in state, or network condition will succeed.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived in its encoder streaming instructions. If your loop is meant to continue beyond that duration, account for the archive behavior and confirm how your event is configured rather than assuming one uninterrupted archive.

Automatic Reconnect and post-reboot startup solve different failure modes. If OBS remains open, check reconnect behavior; if the PC restarted, first establish whether OBS launched, then whether it sent a feed and YouTube accepted it.
